- After high school, he joined the Army during WWII and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
- He was a prominent fisherman, newspaper columnist, and author of 32 books on the outdoors. His "life list" of fish caught included 126 species. He fished on every continent except Antarctica. He designed a fly, dubbed "Lefty's Deceiver," that was so revolutionary, it was pictured on a US first-class stamp in 1991.
- His father died when Lefty was 6. He helped support the family by selling catfish he caught at night by lantern light.
