This article contains spoilers for Season 1 of “Based on a True Story.”
British actor Tom Bateman, who plays charming but sociopathic “Westside Ripper” Matt Pierce in Peacock’s “Based on a True Story,” said he had no idea how big the true crime genre was in the U.S. before signing on to the series from “The Boys” creator Craig Rosenberg.
“I thought it was a bit niche,” he told TheWrap of the idea that main character Ava sees a podcast about a serial killer as her ticket to the big time.
Bateman (who’s not related to executive producer Jason Bateman) discussed America’s obsession with real-life murders and what a possible Season 2 might look like. Read our interview below, and watch an exclusive “Based on a True Story” Peacock feaurette in the video above.

It is a usual night in LA. An attractive, confident-looking young brunette woman is casually practicing zumba inside her classy apartment. All of a sudden, she hears a strange knock on her door. But there’s no one outside. She gets back to business—until she sees this big, shadowy figure in the mirror, standing right behind her.
You know what happened next, as you have voraciously binge-watched Peacock’s Based on a True Story recently and now can’t stop obsessing over it. The crime comedy is slowly becoming all the rage thanks to its highly thrilling storyline, laced with a lot of humor. The simultaneously addictive and funny show has played it boldly by revealing its serial killer in the very first episode. But it has (I bet intentionally) left enough doubts for us to draw many theories, implying that Matt Pierce, the plumber, is not the serial killer.

Plot: Follows a realtor, a former tennis star and a plumber who seize a unique opportunity to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime
Review: The only thing that is getting more tiresome than true-crime series are the projects that try to develop a twist on the already twist-heavy genre. While adaptations of actual criminal cases and murderers have not slowed down in recent years, there has been a new crop of fictional tales focused on average people obsessed with true crime and involved in the investigation themselves. At the same time, few have come close to the brilliance of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, which has not stopped podcast-oriented copycats from popping up on other streamers. The latest addition is Peacock’s Based on a True Story. The series from producers Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman boasts the star power of Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina...
