Savannah Guthrie’s next one-hour special won’t appear on any of NBC News’ best known properties, which include “Today” and “NBC Nightly News.” And yet, it may be of more critical importance to the NBCUniversal-owned news organization than any in-depth report she’s presented in recent months.
Guthrie will today kick off a week-long focus by NBC News on the mental health of young people during the pandemic, the first of what NBC News President Noah Oppenheim says will be a year-long effort to provide deep reports — one a week — around specific topics across NBC News media properties.
Reports from the first series, “Kids Under Pressure,” will air on “Today,” “NBC Nightly News,” MSNBC’s daytime programs, NBC News.com and NBC News Now, the unit’s streaming-video hub. After delivering segments devoted to the topic on NBC News morning and evening programs, Guthrie will host a one-hour...

Rick Santelli, the veteran CNBC correspondent, recently got into an on-air spat with one of his longtime colleagues. Whether he will be given leeway to spar in similar fashion with new co-workers elsewhere in the company is something executives at NBCUniversal ought to work quickly to decide.
During an early-December panel on the business-news network’s “Squawk Box,” Santelli began to yell at Andrew Ross Sorkin, who pressed him on comments he had made about coronavirus restrictions at restaurants. Sorkin pushed his colleague to exercise greater caution about suggesting viewers should be able to crowd into restaurants the way they do into retail outlets.
“Who is this? Who is this?” asked Santelli, even though Sorkin has been a co-host of the program for almost a decade. As Sorkin prodded Santelli to reconsider what he said, the correspondent went into an on-air huff. “I disagree. I disagree! I disagree!” said Santelli,...

MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi usually gets to do his job from the comfort of a New York studio, surrounded by a helpful crew and the latest technology. On Saturday, he had to worry about being tear-gassed on the streets of Minneapolis.
Velshi, who has been delivering reports from the streets of that protest-torn city, was struck by a rubber bullet while covering the scene, just one of a number of mainstream press operatives confronted by new realities as they set about their job of trying to provide information to the public about a story that is more dangerous than the norm. Protesters have gathered in cities across the nation, ranging from Los Angeles and New York to Minneapolis and Salt Lake City, largely in reaction to the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.
I’m hit in the leg by a rubber bullet but am fine.

As Hurricane Dorian headed toward the Florida coast, reporters for news networks and local stations fanned out along the state’s southeastern coastline but also were adjusting their plans to cover the devastation and relief efforts in the area so far hardest hit: the Bahamas.
CBS News sent Nikki Battiste and a crew to the islands, while CNN has reporter Patrick Oppman in Freeport on Grand Bahama and ABC News has had a crew in Marsh Harbour, a town in the Abaco Islands where the hurricane hit as a Category 5 with 180 mph winds. NBC News’ Morgan Chesky and a team are in Nassau, Bahamas, and other outlets also are working on dispatching reporting teams to the devastated areas.
