As Fox Entertainment gears up for the fall season, the chief of its unscripted division is most excited about returning to production with scaled-back pandemic restrictions.
“I’m not gonna say Covid’s gone, because it’s definitely not gone, but things have become easier to film,” Rob Wade, president of alternative entertainment and specials, told Variety ahead of the network’s summer 2022 Television Critics Association press tour presentation. (Find Variety‘s interview with Fox’s scripted chief Michael Thorn here.)
“‘We have ‘The Masked Singer’ coming back,” which has been completely reinvented,” Wade said. The series, a singing competition between celebrities whose identities are concealed by elaborate costumes, debuted in 2019. Therefore, only its first two seasons got through production unaffected by Covid-19.
Season 8 will follow what Wade calls a “king or queen of the hill” format, where only one contestant will move on from each episode. After three singers...

“Hillary,” a four-hour docuseries about the life and career of Hillary Clinton, has sold to Sky for U.K. distribution rights, Variety has learned.
Clinton sat down for 35 hours of interviews with director Nanette Burstein (“On the Ropes”). In the United States, “Hillary” will premiere on Hulu on March 6. The project is produced by Burstein, Howard T. Owens and Ben Silverman of Propagate.

Fox Entertainment Taps Propagate As International Distributor Of Its Unscripted Studio’s Programming
Fox Entertainment in May launched an in-house unscripted studio to provide reality series for the newly independent broadcast network, starting with Season 2 of flagship The Masked Singer. The network’s CEO Charlie Collier said at the time that the company’s overall mission to keep a lid on costs. With fresh investment from The Raine Group in hand, Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens’ Propagate has bought into Incognita, the French shingle run by Edouard de Vesinne. The timing worked for both sides with Propagate having a warchest for investments after Raine backed the company, and De Vesinne exiting EuropaCorp.
“This was the first chance for us to collaborate for the European and global market,” Silverman told Variety. “Edouard understands the global market while being committed to, and part of, Europe. We see an opportunity to be a local supplier to the big global streamers that we have good relationships with, but also to focus on local markets.”
The deal has closed and speaking from Paris, Silverman said that the first projects are underway. These include “Art of War,” a drama from Clive Bradley (“Trapped”), a high-end scripted series described as being in a similar vein to BBC and AMC show “The Night Manager.
