It’s been a tough week in the world, and that posed a difficult challenge for Bill Maher on his Real Time show on Friday. How do you conduct a show built on political comedy when the subject matter is so grim?
But Maher navigated the thorny issues with grace, finding the humor in throwbacks to old reliables like Kanye West and Donald Trump while keeping the focus on whatever solutions might be gleaned from his guests.
Maher made no secret of his allegiance, stating up front during his panel discussion that he believed Israel has the moral high ground in this conflict. That was challenged at times by James Kirchick, columnist for Tablet Magazine, writer-at-large for Air Mail, and author of Secret City: The Hidden History of Gay Washington, and particularly Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy and former foreign policy advisor to Senator...

A gallery of tech industry CEOs, including Tesla/X’s Elon Musk, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Google’s Sundar Pichai, are scheduled to attend a Senate forum on artificial intelligence next month.
They also will be joined by the president of the WGA, Meredith Stiehm, as well as other union leaders, along with Charles Rivkin, the chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association. The meeting, organized by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, comes as AI is an issue in Hollywood’s current labor strife.
Schumer is billing this as the first “AI Insight Forum,” and it is scheduled for the morning of Sept. 13. It’s unclear if all of the attendees will be there in person or appear via videoconference.

As concerns for AI’s rapid growth circulate among almost every industry, Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin, contributors on the 2020 Netflix documentary-drama film “The Social Dilemma,” warn there is no “pull[ing] the plug” on the technology in an upcoming interview with NBC News’ Lester Holt.
In an exclusive clip of the interview shared with TheWrap, which airs Wednesday on “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” as part of NBC News’ ongoing “A.I. Revolution” series, Harris warns that the technology’s widespread evolution is happening so quickly that even the experts can’t keep up.
“The CEOs of the big AI labs are saying they can’t even keep up with the pace because people are inventing new improvements so much faster than their own understanding,” Harris tells Holt in the clip.

That the nation is polarized in politics and many other areas is not really arguable. But few people understand what’s driving the anger that’s creating two separate and increasingly antagonistic spheres of thought.
Bill Maher’s Real Time tackled that issue on HBO Max Friday night, bringing on Tristan Harris, the president and co-ceo for the Center for Humane Technology, a think-tank dedicated to pondering the root causes of our growing divide.
Harris was on the show to discuss the Wall Street Journal report on Facebook’s efforts to make its platform a healthier environment for reasonable debate, while lessening the pernicious effects on social standing and mental health. He noted how Facebook’s methodology of filtering drives traffic on negative comments, thereby often throwing gasoline on a raging debate fire and encouraging even more outrageous behavior.

Updated with video: Joe Biden won the election, Bill Maher declared Friday, although you wouldn’t know it watching network anchors obsess about tens of votes in counties from four remaining states where the former VP is ahead and over the top in electoral votes.
“The networks are still too chickensh*t to call it,” said the host of HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher.
“No matter who you voted for, we can be proud that we live in the third most democratic country in North America,” said Maher, slamming the President’s performance last night claiming Michigan and calling votes that eroded his lead illegal. “He’s throwing a tantrum … He doesn’t like that for the first time he’s on...

Since The Social Dilemma hit Netflix, social media users have been up in arms regarding the tech industry's intrusion on our everyday lives, especially in regard to mental health. The documentary follows Skyler Gisondo and Vincent Kartheiser as they point out the dangerous effects social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have on the average citizen. Current and former Silicon Valley bigwigs weigh in, including Tristan Harris, who gives one of the scariest revelations to come from the film: "if you're not paying for the product, you are the product."
A former Google design ethicist, Harris attended Stanford, where he studied computer science with a focus on human-computer interaction (Hci). While pursuing his education, he worked at Apple, where he had tremendous success with his invention of the "Spotlight For Help" feature. Commonly known as the magnify glass icon on Apple products, this search bar is still in use today.

Entertainment The documentary not only teaches us to introspect our decisions and choices but also makes us aware of the circles and patterns in which we're trapped.Nikita GhodkeThe Netflix docu-drama The Social Dilemma induces thought-provoking questions revolving around social media, a technology that leaves users wrapped around the virtual world so much that they have forgotten what its implications could be. Jeff Orlowski, the director, untangles answers bringing together the creative, brilliant minds behind popular social platforms. The documentary features a group of creative heads, including Tristan Harris, former design ethicist at Google, Tim Kendal, former President at Pinterest, and Justin Rosenstein, a former engineer with Google and Facebook, and many more elaborating on the very ideas that they engineered. As Harris says, “Never before in history have 50 designers made decisions that would have an impact on two billion people.” In the film, one of the interviewees says, “It...

There’s an oft-quoted saying about tech companies: If you aren’t paying for the product, you are the product. That idea is brought into stark reality in the new Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma, in which director Jeff Orlowski weaves together deft interviews with some of the very people who designed the networks and platforms that govern so much of the everyday life of billions of people around the globe today.
Orlowski, the director of the climate change documentaries Chasing Coral and Chasing Ice, hadn’t always thought of tech as pernicious. But he knew Tristan Harris, a former design ethicist at Google and ...

To some, social media is evil, and Netflix’s upcoming “The Social Dilemma” documentary is going to tell you why. The streaming service unveiled the trailer for its upcoming title, which premieres September 9 and promises an in-depth — and thoroughly harrowing — look at how social media platforms and algorithms manipulate individuals and contribute to issues such as viral conspiracy theories, teenage mental health issues, rampant misinformation, and political polarization.
The film’s interviewees include Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology; the co-inventor of the Facebook “Like” button, Justin Rosenstein; Tim Kendall, former President of Pinterest and former Director of Monetization at Facebook; Cathy O’Neil, author of “Weapons of Math Destruction”; and Rashida Richardson, Director of Policy at the AI Now Institute.
“The Social Dilemma” is directed by Jeff Orlowski, who previously created hit nature documentaries such as “Chasing Ice” and “Chasing Coral.”

Many a personal device will be at least temporarily darkened by “The Social Dilemma” — though whether it’s already too late to stem, mid-course, the societal disaster the film charts is just one of many questions it raises. This potent documentary by Jeff Orlowski lends a podium to various experts who are certain the pervasive influence of under-regulated social media is destroying civilization from within. The problem, to paraphrase Mark Twain, is that it’s much easier to manipulate people than to persuade them they’re being manipulated.
It’s a thesis that doesn’t seem so improbable after 93 minutes of this densely packed yet lively and entertaining documentary, whose accessibility is heightened by some narrative play-acting. Easily one of the most talked-about docs at Sundance this year, “The Social Dilemma” is sure to attract significant interest from buyers for various formats around the world.

, Jeff Orlowski’s “The Social Dilemma” does for Facebook what his previous documentaries “Chasing Ice” and “Chasing Coral” did for climate change (read: bring compelling new insight to a familiar topic while also scaring the absolute shit out of you). And while the film covers — and somehow manages to contain — a staggering breadth of topics and ramifications, one little sentence is all it takes to lay out the means and ends of the crisis at hand: Russia didn’t hack Facebook, Russia used Facebook.
That may not be a mind-blowing idea for anyone who’s been raised on the internet, but it would be wrong to think that Orlowski’s film is only speaking to the back of the class. While “The Social Dilemma” is relevant to every person on the planet, and should be legible enough to even the most technologically oblivious types, its target demographic is very online...
