In case you were wondering, Krypto is the very best dog in all of comics.
There is an ongoing argument in my household about who the best dog in comics is. And before you ask, yes the debate predates the arrival of our toddler. This is an important question. Anyway, we have at various times taken several positions. Sometimes it was Pizza Dog from Hawkeye. One time it was Ace the Bat-hound (it was right when the first post-Rebirth Batman annual hit). Thori and Cosmo from Guardians of the Galaxy are non-starters even though I love them dearly (they're more like people than dogs). But the argument almost always comes down to Lockjaw vs. Krypto, and in Supergirl #38, Jody Houser and Rachael Stott provide some pretty definitive evidence that it's Krypto.
I'm not going to try and pretend it's anything complicated like who's got the best stories...

With me this book has always been a strange one. Although a Doctor Who fan, I didn’t enjoy the most recent Dr Who TV series. I felt the writing was average, I didn’t really take to this incarnation of The Doctor, and I have not really enjoyed The Fam, the companions by committee who just don’t seem that interesting. So, when the book came out my expectations were not particularly high. It says a lot then that Jody Houser has managed to make me care a bit about these characters, and she has shown that written well, in good stories, there are good stories to be told. I’m not sure how well this book is doing sales wise, but it would be a shame if the generally lukewarm reception to the last series affected it negatively.

Seven issues in already, where did that time go? In the entertainment bank, that’s where. It’s been a great half year of issues, and I still stand by my comment that I find the comic book far more entertaining than the last TV series was. The BBC need to make Jody Houser a creative consultant or something, as she gets more emotion and fun out of these characters than the show does. But I digress.
Last issue continued the mystery of the ‘Hidden Human History’ podcast, and how that podcast seems to be predicting where and when the Tardis is going to pitch up. Sixteenth century Europe, Eighteenth Century America, doesn’t matter. The Stilean Flesh Eaters continue their appearances as well, as does a ever so slightly jealous Doctor, who doesn’t like to be outshone by anyone,...

First thing to mention this time round is the distinct lack of the name Rachael Stott anywhere. In my review of the last issue I had just mentioned how it was nice to see a creative team stay intact for more than a handful of issues, but clearly the comics gods decided to punish my hubris. I know Rachael Stott is working for Marvel at the moment, so perhaps her absence is due to scheduling. Her (temporary?) replacement, Roberta Ingranata, I know from the Image comic Witchblade, and she seems a good fit for the book at least. Still, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so let’s take a bite…
If you recall last issue the Doctor and Fam pitched up in 1500′s Europe, in what is now Holland, during the historically important Guelder Wars.

Good news all round this issue, as a new story arc kicks off and all the cast and crew are present and accounted for. How often do you see a new book launched with a great creative team, only for that creative team to bugger off after a handful of issues. Well here we are at issue 5, beginning a new story arc, and everything’s in place. I’ll award a star just for that these days. The previous story arc was entertaining enough, and The Thirteenth Doctor certainly shone bright, but I did feel the companions, or The Fam as the Beeb, Titan Comics and presumably Guy Ritchie would have it, were a little shortchanged, so hopefully they’ll have a bit more to do this time out.
Although The Doctor’s face changes, his/her modus operandi rarely does,...

I think I had more fun reading the last three issues of The Thirteenth Doctor than I had watching the entire last series of the TV show. Jody Houser has certainly shown these characters can work well, can be interesting, and can feature in adventures that are just plain fun. The TV show was trying too hard to be ‘moral message of the week’, and fell between the twin stools of entertainment and education. It’s heart was in the right place, but on the whole misjudged both its audience and the tone. As some critics, or fanboys, or critical fanboys, were just looking for any excuse to criticize, this was unfortunate. The Thirteenth Doctor, when done right, is a good character. Just ask Jody Houser. But I digress…

I’m a reasonably intelligent person, and yet it has taken me 3 issues to realise that this book is entirely written, drawn, coloured and edited by women. If that makes you happy or not, still quite a radical statement by a publisher at any level. Not affirmative action by any means, as writer Jody Houser and artist Rachel Stott are top talents, but still a lot of pressure to make this book a success. Everyone seems to be having fun though, and that carries over to the book itself. Although female creators have been in the industry for many years, they’ve rarely been trusted to carry books by themselves, creator owned books aside, so books like this can trail blaze in the industry for many other to follow. For that alone, I’d like the book to do well.

This book started out really strong last issue, with a five star review from me, and that followed on from the 0 issue, which again was superb. It entertained, had great script and art, good characters, and promised much to come. Ironically, I preferred that story over most of The Thirteenth Doctor’s TV adventures to date. I’m not entirely sure with the TV show if it’s the characters that aren’t quite clicking with me, or the scripts and stories, but it’s been my least favourite series for a good few years. Definitely part of the reason is the taking away of the classic villains. No Cybermen, no Daleks, no Master, no Weeping Angels. It’s the same as taking The Joker away from Batman, or Lex Luthor from Superman. Just wrong.

So following on from the Thirteenth Doctor #0 issue, which was really good and should be sought out if you missed it, and of course a handful of episodes of the TV show, we finally get the first issue of The Thirteenth Doctor ongoing series. Although all still a little new, we at least now know a little about The Doctor and her new companions Ryan, Yaz, and Graham. We also know this Doctor’s thing. Every Doctor of course has a thing. Matt Smith’s Doctor was quirky. Peter Capaldi’s Doctor was grumpy. Tom Baker’s was eccentric. Jodie Whittaker’s is…friendly. And sociable. In fact, this Doctor is the polar opposite of virtually all her predecessors in that she loves companionship. Which is nice. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is The Doctor’s love of exploration and discovery.

So, issue 2 has rolled around fast for this, The Road to the Thirteenth Doctor. James Peaty returns to script, though The Eleventh Doctor has replaced the Tenth of last issue, and Pasquale Qualano steps in as the new artist. This being Titan Comics big traditional Doctor Who event this year, I’m guessing, this is as close to a team up of the Doctor’s you will get. It’s not so much a team up as a gathering of common threads all leading to the unveiling of The Thirteenth Doctor. Last issue was a great start to proceedings, as much fun for seeing Ten strut his stuff after a little absence as for the mini-series this is all part of. Now, time for Eleven to remind us.

You would have to be living under a rock to not realise that a new Doctor is on the horizon, with the regeneration of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor last Christmas into Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor. It’s a regeneration of course that has divided Who fandom, with vocal fans and critics alike. Me? I’m on the fence. Although not a casting I think is a slam dunk, and with Missy having already having played with that whole female Time Lord thing, I’m not sure a female Doctor was the right thing to do right now. That being said, it has been done, she has been cast, and I’m happy to give both the show and The Doctor every chance. Remember when fans were up in arms when Matt Smith was cast because he was...

Though Warner Bros. has ostensibly pumped the brakes on its live-action Batgirl movie following the sudden departure of Joss Whedon, comic book artist Rachael Stott has kept hope alive with a wonderful new piece of fan art that imagines Janelle Monáe (Moonlight, Hidden Figures) as DC’s new Barbara Gordon.
Embedded below, this stunning portrait is more of a carefully constructed sketch of Monáe in the title role – as opposed to, say, BossLogic’s renderings, which tend to dabble in the realm of photorealism. Nevertheless, it’s a beautiful tease of what could be, given Janelle Monáe was reportedly one of the actresses in contention for the coveted role – where she joined an exclusive list of candidates that at one point included Elle Fanning, Naomi Scott…and Lindsay Lohan!?
