Bridgertonwhisks fans into a fantasy version of Regency England they’ve never seen before. The series unveils an integrated ton, where biracial romance is embraced and the queen (Golda Rosheuvel) is a Black woman. But, we’re told, the aristocracy wasn’t always so welcoming.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story unfurls the origin story of the “beautiful mixture of humanity” on display in the Bridgerton universe, as executive producer Betsy Beers calls it. At the very core of this tale is the Great Experiment, which kicks off when young Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) arrives in England to marry young King George (Corey Mylchreest). The lives of Black socialites like young Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas) are revolutionized in the process.
The Queen Charlotte cast, creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes and the other executive producers are ready to answer every question you have about the Experiment that changed the ton forever.

This story about “Queen Charlotte” costume designers Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
What would a Met Ball with a Georgian theme look like? That was the inspiration behind Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon’s costumes for Netflix’s “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” Shonda Rhimes’ spinoff of the hit Regency-era drama series straddles both that period, when Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) bore the public weight of the Crown, and 56 years earlier, when she (India Amarteifio) married King George (Corey Mylchreest) and adjusted to life as a royal.
For the later timeline, set in 1817, Paolo and Frecon honored the style established by “Bridgerton” costume designer Ellen Mirojnick: high-waisted, fluid gowns influenced by ancient Greece and Rome. For the 1761-set portion, they went back to the conical shape, when women were tightly cinched...

As fans campaign for a second season of "Queen Charlotte," we're still reeling from season one's incredible performances, namely Arsema Thomas's impressive portrayal of Lady Agatha Danbury. In "Bridgerton," Lady Danbury is an established noblewoman with a reputation for being a natural leader. In the spinoff, however, viewers catch a glimpse at her early life as an aristocrat, including her friendship with Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio), her complex relationship with Lord Danbury (Cyril Nri), and her beginnings as one of the most trusted - and feared - members of the ton.
For Thomas, the prospect of playing such a well-established and beloved character was "extremely scary." But that only made her more eager to do the character justice. "As an actor, you rarely get such a complex and challenging character to play, also specifically as a Black woman," she tells Popsugar.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, a prequel spin-off of the popular Netflix series Bridgerton, tells the story of Queen Charlotte and King George III, a plotline that was hinted at in Season 2 of the parent show. The prequel explores the origin of a young Charlotte (India Amarteifio) during her arranged marriage to George (Corey Mylchreest).
As a Bridgerton series, the central love story, including the sex scenes, is the most important. Amarteifio and Mylchreest said that creating the chemistry between the two characters went smoothly as the royals’ relationship gradually transformed as the show progressed. At first, they only had sex on even days for the sole purpose of creating an heir. But as they grow closer, their relationship becomes more intimate.
Mylchreest thanked intimacy coordinators Lucy Fennell and Lizzie Talbot for their work, noting that Bridgerton had previously received criticism for making gratuitous sex scenes.

This story about “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” stars India Amarteifio, Corey Mylchreest and Arsema Thomas first appeared in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Heavy is the head that wears the crown in “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” but the actors who star in the show carry the responsibility together.
As the title indicates, “Queen Charlotte” is a spinoff of Netflix’s wildly popular 19th-century period drama created by Shonda Rhimes. The prequel series was under a lot of pressure to follow up the more or less colorblind society established in “Bridgerton” — in addition to living up to the steaminess synonymous with the Regency-era show that’s based on Julia Quinn’s books.

Netflix debuted the first “Bridgerton” Season 3 images on Saturday during its fan-centric Tudum event, offering a first look at the new episodes of the wildly popular Netflix series based on Julia Quinn’s books.
Season 3 will deviate from the book series order by skipping Benedict’s love story (the crux of the third book) for that of Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton), which fans are dying to watch.
Season 2 saw Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) fall in love with Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) after first thinking that he should wed her sister Edwina (Charithra Chandran), who was proclaimed the season’s “incomparable.” At the end of Season 1, it was revealed that Penelope is actually Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews), the ton’s gossipmonger that always has something sensational printed on her morning pamphlets.

Arsema Thomas had not seen the Netflix hit Bridgerton before she sent in an audition tape to play young Lady Agatha Danbury in its prequel series, Queen Charlotte, while doing her master’s degree in fine arts in London. But even without having seen the show that has captivated fans globally, she knew she wanted the role.
“There was something interesting or different about this type of storytelling because it’s clearly grabbing people,” Thomas tells THR. “There was something about the fact that I have never seen a character written like this for a Black woman before. Usually, if she’s supporting the main narrative, she doesn’t have a three-dimensional narrative of her own — she only exists in the realm of the lead. When Bridgerton was first released in 2020, Arsema Thomas wanted so badly to be a part of that world she couldn’t even watch the hit Netflix period romance.

Like “Bridgerton,” “Queen Charlotte features orchestral covers of modern music, but an original composition by Kris Bowers kicks off the soundtrack during Charlotte and George’s wedding in the first episode.
Bowers co-wrote “A Feeling I’ve Never Been” with Tayla Parx based on the work of Joseph Bologne Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a Creole composer who was one of the first men of color to become known for his compositions, and who also happened to be an excellent fencer (and the subject of the 2022 film “Chevalier.”)

The historical world of "Queen Charlotte" - the first "Bridgerton" spinoff series - is so sumptuous that fans might wish to spend a day there. But the "Queen Charlotte" cast tells us there is one downside to wearing heavy, luxurious costumes on the gorgeous sets: It gets really hot!
"We got one of the hottest summers ever," Sam Clemmett, who plays Young Brimsley, tells Popsugar. One way they beat the heat was by having cooling tents right off set, where they could get a blast of cold air in between takes. Arsema Thomas, who plays young Lady Danbury, says she would have to "take off bits" of her costume when it was "extremely hot," but that the costume department also gave her "arm pit pads" right in her dresses to soak up the sweat. She calls herself a "very sweaty person."

Netflix’s decision to create an entire prequel about “Bridgerton” breakout Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) may have initially surprised audiences — but the series’ smash-hit success might stir things up as much as its royal protagonist.
In the week since its May 4 premiere, “Queen Charlotte” was watched for 148.28 million hours, becoming the top English-language series on the platform in the U.S. (and entering the top 10 in 91 countries). It scored high with audiences and critics, and the six episodes (including a feature-length finale) were devoured by “Bridgerton” fans around the world, proving the steamy, semi-fictional Regency world to be even more fruitful than expected.

Bridgerton’s imperious Queen Charlotte gets her origin story in Netflix’s prequel series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. The six-episode drama follows a young Charlotte (India Amarteifio), a German noblewoman who is married off to King George III (Corey Mylchreest). Her arrival in the U.K. sparks the “Great Experiment” – the racial integration of the country’s aristocracy. As characters such as a young Lady Danbury (Arsema Thomas) navigate a new social reality, Charlotte must adjust to life in a strange country while also dealing with her husband’s secret illness.

However, there is also a plethora of talent entering the awards conversation for the first time, thanks to their work on series including “Queen Charlotte,” “Shrinking” and “The Last of Us.”
After the success of “Bridgerton,” it’s no surprise that Shonda Rhimes’ spinoff series, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” is filled with talented new faces. India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest portray Queen Charlotte and King George III while Arsema Thomas portrays the young Agatha Danbury.

Dearest gentle reader: “Queen Charlotte” has been declared a jewel of Netflix’s spring season.
The “Bridgerton” spinoff had a regal first week of streaming, logging 148.28 million hours viewed on Netflix. The streamer announced the viewership numbers via its weekly Top 10 Global English Language TV Show viewership chart, dated May 1-7, which the good Queen unsurprisingly topped at No. 1; the limited series made that ascension with just four days of viewing, after dropping all episodes May 4.
If every viewer who started “Queen Charlotte” finished it during the week, the show would have received roughly 22 million viewers, according to Netflix’s estimates based on the show’s running time. That means the fictionalized King George’s coronation this weekend was likely watched by fewer people compared to that other coronation going on, although it did manage to surpass Charles and Camilla’s UK ratings at the very least.

[Spoiler Alert: The below contains spoilers from Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story Season 1.] Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story may have shined a light on an earlier chapter in the titular monarch’s life, but it also brought to the forefront Lady Danbury’s (Arsema Thomas) story, one that, up until now, has been shrouded in mystery in the flagship Bridgerton series. And while this series sees Lady Danbury fight for her family’s titles, social status, and more, one thing seems unchanged and that’s the tenacity with which she approaches challenges. “She is so cool, so badass,” Thomas gushes of her character. She portrays the younger version of Lady Danbury (who is still played in the Regency Era by Adjoa Andoh). The difference in this show, Thomas points out, is that Lady Danbury doesn’t know she’s that badass quite yet. “You realize that [she doesn’t] think that about [herself]. [She’s] just trying to hide her ...

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a hit with viewers and critics alike, if online chatter is any indication. So, will this Netflix limited series actually be limited, or might fans get a second season? “There have been questions, but I’m not having conversations about it yet,” creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly. “I could live with Charlotte and George forever, but we told a very specific, closed-ended story that I think is a complete tale of this complicated, imperfect love. But I’m not ruling anything out because I never know.” The cast certainly seems game for more. India Amarteifio, who plays the younger Charlotte on the Bridgerton spinoff, told EW she “would absolutely love to do something in the realm again.” Netflix And Arsema Thomas, who plays Lady Danbury, said, “I never thought I could love like this until I had my own child.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story takes viewers back to the origins and rise to power of Queen Charlotte. The Bridgerton prequel is a limited series but creator Shonda Rhimes leaves the door slightly open for a second season.
“There have been questions, but I’m not having conversations about it yet,” Rhimes told EW about a second season of the prequel. “I could live with Charlotte and George forever, but we told a very specific, closed-ended story that I think is a complete tale of this complicated, imperfect love. But I’m not ruling anything out because I never know.”
India Amarteifio plays the young Queen Charlotte and is joined by Corey Mylchreest as George) and Arsema Thomas as a young Agatha.
Thomas says she’s “obsessed” with her character and would be open to reprising the role if another season would be made.

On Bridgerton novelist Julia Quinn’s website, a fan asks “Will you write a book about Lady Danbury? I’d love to read about her when she was younger.”
Unfortunately not, was Quinn’s original answer, following the logic that Lady Danbury – a widowed matriarch who wields serious power in the ton and always hosts the first ball of the season, played by Adjoa Andoh – is already on record in the Bridgerton books as saying that her husband was an idiot. Delving into that marriage and her past wouldn’t offer much scope, said Quinn.

While the royalty obsessed are awaiting King Charles III’s coronation this weekend, others are binging the Bridgerton-verse’s latest addition worthy of the Society Papers: Queen Charlotte.
The new Shondaland prequel series premiered Thursday on Netflix, exploring the origin story of the fictional Regency-era world of Bridgerton, the New York Times-bestselling romance novel series by Julia Quinn. Long before Lady Whistledown, a young Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (played by India Amarteifio) was forced into marriage with King George (Corey Mylchreest) and ultimately falls in love with her arranged husband. “Queen Charlotte” actor Corey Mylchreest thinks it’s best to look at King George’s illness without a solid diagnosis, but he does share the roots of George’s poor mental health.
Viewers start to get glimpses into the king’s “fits” as Charlotte spends more time around him. His love for astronomy crosses over into what look like hallucinations in which the king confuses reality for the galaxy. The actor emphasized that George’s condition is rooted in anxiety and stress.
“Everyone can have theories, but what is useful to know is that it’s triggered by panic, and that panic is set off because his trauma is so wearable because he hasn’t addressed it ever,” Mylchreest said. “No one has ever addressed it, and he’s constantly in situations that trigger that. Once, the stress or this panic or this anxiety, that’s when he loses his facility.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” now streaming on Netflix.
“Queen Charlotte” may be an extension of the “Bridgerton” universe, but its brand-new story by Shonda Rhimes is quite different, with a much more serious tone.
“The series in itself is like a different beast,” says Corey Mylchreest, who portrays young King George III in the Netflix drama. “It feels like ‘Bridgerton’ but it has maybe darker moments to it, and it’s a little bit grittier. So it feels like its own thing.”
The story of Queen Charlotte and King George III was briefly touched on in Season 2 of “Bridgerton,” but this prequel dives in to the origin story of a young Charlotte (India Amarteifio) as she embarks on her arranged marriage to a young King George. With Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which debuted all six episodes on Thursday, we know exactly how the titular monarch’s marriage to King George III sparked the diverse world presented in Bridgerton.
It all began with an arranged marriage in the series premiere. A young, strong-willed Charlotte (played by India Amarteifio) was not happy to learn that her brother Adolphus (Tunji Kasim) set her up to marry the King of England (Corey Mylchreest). On the carriage ride to the palace, she threatened to leap from the moving vehicle and impale herself with her delicate and sharp corset made of whalebone.

If you’re wondering whether “Queen Charlotte” keeps with the “Bridgerton” tradition of including string covers of pop songs, the answer is a resounding yes.
These sonic delights became expected after Season 1 of Shonda Rhimes’ adaptation of Julia Quinn’s “Bridgerton” novels, which are set in the Regency Era marriage market. Rhimes has returned to the royal world for a peek at the Georgian Era and the start of the Great Experiment in the prequel series “Queen Charlotte.” After all, Queen Charlotte made way for a multiracial society in a previously whitewashed London, all because she married the king. Not only does the “Bridgerton” spinoff series “Queen Charlotte,” delve into the queen’s backstory, but just as Charlotte (India Amarteifio) learns to navigate her new status, a young Lady Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas) figures out what it means to hold title and be in the queen’s court. "Bridgerton" viewers know Lady Danbury as the all-knowing, very wise, and very funny matriarch who rules the Ton with a quick wit and a great hat collection. But the new spinoff miniseries, "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story," dives into Lady Danbury's days before she was one of society's steeliest widows. In the show, Adjoa Andoh returns as Lady Agatha in the "Bridgerton" timeline, while Arsema Thomas plays her as a younger woman, circa 1761. At that time, Agatha is married to Lord Danbury (Cyril Nri), and she's clearly miserable. They share four children, who she rarely sees, and her husband demands he has sex with her - rough and painful - almost every night. After their encounters, her maid Coral (Peyvand Sadeghian) runs her a bath so she can recuperate alone.

“Bridgerton‘s” Queen Charlotte is stepping into the spotlight.
Netflix launches the six-part limited series, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story”, which delves deeper into the origin story of how Charlotte became the queen and her life beyond the crown. Told through two different time periods — one that charts young Charlotte’s (India Amarteifio) early days of her reign and marriage to King George (Corey Mylchreest), and the other set decades later with an older, hardened queen (“Bridgerton’s” Golda Rosheuvel) lording over the kingdom.
While “Bridgerton” briefly dipped its toe into Queen Charlotte’s real-life mixed race ancestry and depicted a Regency era that was a more racially inclusive interpretation of the time period, where people of color also held titles and positions of power, “Queen Charlotte” — in many respects — fills in the blanks on how the Ton got there in the first place. Netflix's new "Bridgerton" prequel series "Queen Charlotte" might focus on the titular monarch and her own family, but the new miniseries also shines a spotlight on the life of Lady Danbury, who fans also know and love from the original series. Viewers also meet her husband Lord Danbury (Cyril Nri) for the first time and get a look at their life during their marriage.

In the first season of the hit Netflix series “Bridgerton,” Lady Agatha Danbury (Adjoh Andoa) proclaims: “We were two separate societies divided by color until a king fell in love with one of us.” It is the first time race is ever overtly mentioned on the show. Since then, many have wondered to what extent race factored into the fictional Regency-era series, especially as it relates to Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel).
“Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” not only fills in the gaps of how “Bridgerton’s” Queen rose to power, but it also shares how she navigated that rise through the hazardous terrain of politics, royalty, mental illness and race. It achieves this through a humanizing character portrayal that delivers a surprising emotional punch. In addition, Shonda Rhimes’ six-episode prequel gives agency to supporting characters of the Bridgertonverse.

If you’re a fan, you’re going to love it. And if you are not, you will discover a wonderful fairy tale with an excellent production and a dynamic that, in our very humble opinion, surpasses the original series at the level of treatment.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a Bridgerton spinoff series that shows us how life was in the Ton during the early days of Queen Charlotte and King George’s marriage. We get to see how they meet and fall in love, how her reign leads to social change in the Ton, and how she became the strong and influential Queen that we see in Bridgerton’s first two seasons. But just because this series introduces us to younger versions of familiar characters doesn’t mean that it’s stuck in the past. Queen Charlotte also features an arc set in the “present day” Regency era of the original series that focuses on Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and Violet Bridgerton’s friendship.
Between both eras, Queen Charlotte has a massive cast full of new and familiar faces. If you want to be as up to date on the hot gossip of the ton as Lady Whistledown,...

For most of its first hour, Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story plays like a step-by-step instruction manual on how to create an irresistible romance, courtesy of creator Shonda Rhimes.
Step one: Introduce a heroine we can’t help but love in Charlotte (India Amarteifio), a 17-year-old princess who spends the ride to her own wedding darkly joking about skewering herself on her undergarments rather than get married off to a man she hasn’t met. Step two: Engineer a meet-cute between our heroine and said man, George III (Corey Mylchreest), and make him so clearly smitten with her that we find ourselves instantly taken with him too. Step three: Have the pair married off in a lavish ceremony, and then sent off into the evening to live out their happily-ever-after.

Netflix hosted a royal ball fit with its own royal court from several HBCUs as well as the “Bridgerton” royals at the “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” premiere on Wednesday night.
Held at Westwood’s Regency Village Theatre, cast members including executive producer and showrunner Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Golda Rosheuvel, India Ria Amarteifio, Corey Mylchreest and Arsema Thomas.
Fans announced the stars’ arrival with cheers as they watched them enter the event before officially hitting the red carpet for a night that included crowns for everyone, as well as a surprising introduction from Alicia Keys, whose song “If I Ain’t Got You” received the classical rendition treatment, as Rhimes promised more music from Black queens would be featured in the coming season. The premiere was punctuated by a panel moderated by Variety’s Angelique Jackson.

The Queen of the Ton is back, but this time as a teenager in Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. The prequel of Shonda Rhimes’ Bridgerton series follows a 17-year-old Queen Charlotte as she navigates her new life as the wife of King George III and the instantaneous changes she has to make in order to thrive as a future matriarch.
At the Los Angeles premiere of Queen Charlotte on Wednesday, Golda Rosheuvel — who reprises her role as the adult version of Charlotte in the new series — said viewers will learn more about what she experienced over the course of her life that makes her as strong as she was in Bridgerton.
“You’re going to know about her vulnerability and how human she is and her strength in knowing who she is,” Rosheuvel told The Hollywood Reporter. “Then when she is in those vulnerable positions, she still stands strong in her own self.

By virtue of being a "Bridgerton" spinoff, "Queen Charlotte" is a frothy romance primed to sweep viewers off their feet with pining, angst, and at least one sexy montage set to an orchestral pop song. But for very good reason, there's only one name in the title. King George (a charming Corey Mylchreest) may be the reigning royal and one-half of the central couple, but the show is named for his wife. India Amarteifio as Charlotte is the unmistakable diamond of this TV season, which charts the young royal's path to becoming the regal queen who reigns over "Bridgerton."
Our introduction to the titular Queen Charlotte speaks volumes before she even utters a word of dialogue: the Queen-to-be peers in through a semi-closed door as men shake hands, sign documents and seal her fate. Without a word of her own input, Charlotte has been betrothed to the King of England.

London’s Leicester Square was transported to The Ton for Netflix’s garden party-themed screening of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
Rainfall gave way to sunshine just in time on Friday night as the newest members of London high society graced the red carpet for the Bridgerton prequel series, which follows the origins of a mischievous Queen Charlotte and her arranged marriage to King George III.
“I could not tell you,” Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter on what makes her stories so special —Bridgerton’s first season totted up 625 million hours of viewing within the first four weeks of its release. “Only that I know we really try hard to make shows that we want to watch, things that we’re passionate about… I am always amazed that other people like them too.”
With no foot-tall wigs or regency-inspired petticoats to reckon with, the cast, including India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest...
