As Daily Dead launches its new Twitch channel, I’ve decided that a great way to celebrate Hellraiser’s upcoming 35th anniversary would be to put myself through a little sweet suffering and watch every single film in the series. I know this seems ill-advised, but I’m just enough of a masochist to give it a go, so I’ll be hosting a Watch Party over two weekends this September and you’re invited to join in!
And I’m not going through this torment for no reason as I’m looking to raise funds for two very important organizations.
The first, Trans Empowerment Project, is “moving the Trans community out of crisis and into empowerment by focusing on the abolition of white supremacy to ensure that our most marginalized community members, Disabled Queer and Trans People of Color, can thrive and live their best lives.”

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month I’m talking to Carolyn Mauricette, who you probably know from a wide range of outlets. She’s the founder of View From the Dark, a site devoted to reviews and essays from people of color in genre film, she’s the Programmer for Canada’s Blood in the Snow film festival, and she’s contributed to The Encyclopedia of Japanese Horror Films and The Encyclopedia of Racism in American Films. And if that weren’t keeping her busy enough, she recently kicked off a new podcast called Reely Melanated with previous Lsbtd guest Ashlee Blackwell.
When I asked Mauricette to nominate a movie for this month’s installment, she let me know she was in the mood for something absurd. Little did I know just how absurd, as I’d never heard of her selection, Hair Extensions...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month I’m chatting with Ashlee Blackwell, founder of Graveyard Shift Sisters, a website dedicated to dispelling the myth that black women can’t be found in the horror genre. She also co-wrote and produced the amazing documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, and has bylines in Fangoria, Rue Morgue, and a bunch of other horror outlets.
Anyone who follows Blackwell knows she’s a huge Wes Craven fan, so it’s no surprise that her pick this month would be something from his filmography. But I had no idea the bonkers antics I was in for when she chose his 1988 return to the slasher genre, Shocker.
In Shocker, Craven leaves Freddy Krueger behind and introduces us to Horace Pinker (Mitch Pileggi), a brutal killer caught by local college student Jonathan Parker (Peter Berg) after Pinker murdered his foster family and girlfriend,...

[Editor's Note: With this past year being another great one across multiple mediums in the horror genre, Bryan Christopher continues Daily Dead's "Favorites of 2019" features by reflecting on his favorite viewing and reading experiences from 2019!]
Doctor Sleep: Oddly enough, my favorite movie of the year was one I didn’t even think I’d bother seeing until about a week before its release. I like both The Shining and Mike Flanagan well enough, but an adaptation of a book I haven’t read that’s also a sequel to a movie that the author hated seemed like a tough tightrope to walk. But an errant viewing of the trailer had me intrigued, and damn if taking a chance didn’t pay off. I get that people have issues with the fan service paid in the return to a certain infamous hotel in the film’s climax, but for me it worked as a natural conclusion to a story that took elements introduced in The Shining and expanded on them without just rehashing or diluting them. I love Ewan McGregor as an adult Danny Torrance...

“Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror” begins with a modest proposal: “Black history is black horror.” It’s a succinct and provocative notion, the idea that there’s a symbiotic relationship between the horror genre and the African-American experience. However, executive producer Tananarive Due said that to her eyes, the two are inextricably linked.
“We were brought here in bondage, and white supremacy continues to mischaracterize and marginalize us,” said Due, a scholar, and novelist who specializes in the supernatural genre. “As the parent of a teenage son who’s already six feet tall, I’m fearful about his future encounters with police and the ways in which black children just like him are assumed on sight to be thugs and less than fully human.”
Due describes that fear and uncertainty as an example of an unrelenting horror that explains why creatives of African descent like herself, gravitate toward...

As genre fans, we are truly lucky to be living in a day and age where we can enjoy a variety of incredible film projects that celebrate nearly every aspect that we love about horror. Sometimes, these documentaries are focused on a specific film or a franchise, sometimes they hone in on one director or actor in particular. Horror favourite Fangoria magazine is to return to its pulpy roots...
Fangoria is kind of like the Ramones of horror magazines. Fun, funny, influential and completely accessible, their interviewers asked pertinent questions and the images were filled with gore, suspense and wit. Every horror fan has at least one copy, that they show, and probably a bunch buried somewhere. Quentin Tarantino has boxes of copies, I’m sure. Most covered in some kind of protective plastic like he’s preserving a dead Pharaoh for a movie he’ll never get around to making. But Fangoria Lives. Cinestate, Dallas-based entertainment company founded by movie producer Dallas Sonnier (Bone Tomahawk, Brawl In Cell Block 99) has bought the magazine, and they are set to restore it to its glory days as a print publication.
Fangoria will have a new Editor-In-Chief, film writer Phil Nobile Jr., who was Editor-At-Large for the website Birth.

I used to read Fangoria Magazine all the time as a teenager. I was always on the hunt for new and different horror films and Fangoria was always my best source. I also enjoyed all of the articles, scoops, and gory photos from the horror movie scene.
The magazine was launched in 1979 and it sold its last print run in 2015. Well, thanks to Cinestate, the multimedia company behind Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99 and the upcoming remake of Puppet Master, the magazine will rise from the grave and move forward under new leadership with a quarterly print publication. The sci-fi magazine Starlog and another horror magazine Gorezone, are also part of the deal. Here's a little promo video teasing the return:

Nobody expected the late, lamented Fangoria Magazine to return from the ashes. Yesterday, a few teasers hit the web and social media. One was in the form of static-filled, dancing TV color bars. Another was a short video with a print copy of the horror rag being delivered through someone's door. In a stunning revelation today, it was revealed that Fangoria will once again grace the doorsteps of monster kids and the adults who grew up reading it. Texas-based entertainment company Cinestate and producer/CEO Dallas Sonnier has bought the brand and is installing a host of familiar names, including Phil Nobile, Jr. as Editor-in-Chief, S. Craig Zahler, Ashlee Blackwell, Samuel Zimmerman, Grady Hendrix, Meredith Borders, Rebekah McKendry, Preston Fassel, and yes --- Fangoria stalwarts Tony Timpone and Michael Gingold....

After an unofficial two-and-a-half year hiatus from the publication world, beloved horror magazine “Fangoria” is returning to print. Texas-based entertainment company Cinestate has acquired all the assets and trademarks of the Fangoria brand, including the magazine, from The Brooklyn Company, and now intends to begin publishing again, just in time for Halloween. The magazine has also named Birth.Movies.Death. Editor-At-Large Phil Nobile Jr. as the outlet’s Editor-in-Chief, and has revealed a number of plans for further expansion into other areas of entertainment.
The last few years have been complicated ones for the publication, which has not published a full print edition since October 2015 and has been beset by employment changes that impacted even some of its most well-known writers. In June of 2016, long-time writer (and then-Editor-in-Chief) Michael Gingold was fired from the publication after 28 years of employment. Art director Bill Mohalley was also let go at the time.
