A jet-lagged Elena Rybakina made it to Seville, but could not inspire Kazakhstan's bid to reach the semifinal of the Billie Jean King Cup.
One of the most open groups pitted Kazakhstan against last year's runners-up Australia and the minnows Slovenia. Kazakhstan were narrowly beaten in their opening tie against Australia leaving them with all to play for against a Kaja Juvan-inspired Slovenia.
In the absence of Elena Rybakina, Yulia Putintseva helped fill the void winning her singles rubbers against Asutralia's Kimberly Birrell and Slovenia's Tamara Zidansek by retirement. But 28-year-old Anna Danilina lost two crucial singles matches in both ties.
Despite beating Slovenia 2-1, Kazakhstan were eliminated by the percentage of sets won, finishing second behind the Slovenians who qualified for the semifinal of the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time in their history.

The 2023 Jiangxi Open will be played in the industrialized city of Nanchang from October 16th through 22nd, and the draw for this year's event has been released.
This Wta 250 event offers the lower-ranked players a chance to lift a Wta title. But there are plenty of experienced heads in the 32-player field featuring three Top 30 players who could halt that dream. In the past, Chinese players have enjoyed massive success at the tournament from the days when it was contested at the 125K level.
Rebecca Peterson is the only foreign player to walk away with the trophy from Nanchang back in 2019 when she beat Elena Rybakina. But it appears the Swede is nursing an injury, having not played since the US Open over a month ago, so we are guaranteed a new champion.
The top seed is Beatriz Haddad Maia who will be expected to charge past Japan's Nao Hibino in her opener.

The 19th edition of the Korea Open will run from October 9th to 15th at the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center, and the draw for this Wta 250 has been released.
At this stage of the season when some of the top players have one eye for the holidays or aspirations for winning more coveted tournaments like the Wta Finals , the likelihood of crowning an unexpected champion is very high. On that note, let us delve into the draw.
Top seed Jessica Pegula leads the top half. She begins her campaign in her mother's birth city against Viktoria Hruncakova. If she wins that match, a second-round match against one of rising star Ashlyn Krueger or former Roland Garros semifinalist Nadia Podoroska awaits.
The second seed is Jelena Ostapenko who is expected to be Pegula's biggest threat this week. After last year's runner-up finish, Ostapenko has unfinished business in Seoul. She opens...

Jelena Ostapenko shocked the Wta 's world no. 1, Iga Swiatek , to reach the 2023 US Open quarterfinals.
Ahead of the fourth-round match between the two experienced players at the 2023 US Open one thing was clear. Swiatek was facing probably the most challenging opponent she could have faced in the fourth round, one that she never beat in her career .
And while the young Pole wanted to follow up on the previous thrashing of her best friend Kaja Juvan , Ostapenko wanted to keep her winning streak going, and beat the 22-year-old once again, and this time, also steal the world no. 1 spot from her.
But Swiatek wasn't ready to lose. Despite being broken in the opening game of the match, she broke her opponent's serve twice in the opening set, eventually winning it 6-3, and starting the match on the front foot.

Playing in front of sporting royalty can be a burden even for the best tennis players, but Iga Swiatek has learned to block out the additional pressure that comes with it.
With an introverted personality, the Pole was regularly a victim of circumstances whenever she was in a social setting. On a tennis court, there was no place to hide when the pressure and the occasion overwhelm you.
In the early part of her career, Swiatek's fragile mindset and approach prompted her to make critical decisions regarding her coaching team. As she began to rise through the ranks and sustain success on the Wta Tour, the need for a sports psychologist became an area of interest.
The 22-year-old has been working with sports psychologist Daria Abramowicz since 2019 with Swiatek crediting her countrywoman in her development as a player. In as much as tennis is a physical and technical sport , mastering...

Iga Swiatek took on good friend Kaja Juvan at the 2023 US Open , and while the win came easy, she approached it as a true professional.
Swiatek showed very little empathy in her match against Kaja Juvan , losing only one game in the entire match. It was the worst beatdown she handed her good friend, but it's something the Slovenian could see coming.
Swiatek admitted before the match that neither struggled to approach their matches as professionals, fully putting the friendship aside. It was pretty evident by the way she smashed her as she was laser-focused. In ways, knowing the situation, Swiatek ended up being more focused than usual.
No, I wasn't laughing for sure. For sure it wasn't an easy match for her. Emotionally as well it's not easy to, like, play with such a score.
But I really just wanted to focus on myself and I think also because...

Wta No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka fired a warning shot to Iga Swiatek that she's determined to fend off all challengers in her quest to reach the ultimate dream of becoming the No. 1 player.
Unlike the men's tour, where Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have played ping-pong with the No. 1 ranking for a year, Swiatek has hoarded her status as the Wta's undisputed No. 1 for a total of 74 consecutive weeks , putting her in 10th spot in the overall list of most weeks at No. 1.
In that timespan, Swiatek left the door open on a couple of occasions, but Sabalenka could not capitalize, most recently at Wimbledon when she came within one match win from unseating the Polish star from the top. But Sabalenka is prowling for any mishaps from the 22-year-old Swiatek at the US Open .

New York, Sep 1 (Ians) World No.1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek dropped just one game as she stormed past qualifier Kaja Juvan into the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals at the US Open in New York on Friday.
Swiatek eased past one of her best friends in Louis Armstrong Stadium on Friday, beating qualifier Kaja Juvan 6-0, 6-1 to reach the Round of 16 at the 2023 US Open.
The pair have been close for nearly a decade, since their days in juniors. But defending champion Swiatek of Poland was still unwavering in collecting her third straight win over Slovenia’s Juvan, polishing off the victory after just 49 minutes of play.
This is Swiatek’s 10th straight win at the Usta Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, as she aims to defend a title for the fourth time in her career.

Iga Swiatek might be best friends with Kaja Juvan, but she certainly didn't hold back in their matchup at the 2023 US Open .
Swiatek has largely dominated over her good friend Kaja Juvan in their previous matches on the Wta Tour. She had no troubles in their two previous matches, though this beatdown might have been the best one yet. Speaking about facing her, Swiatek admitted that they could put their friendship away while on the court, and she did just that.
The match opened with an early break, and then we saw another break, and if that wasn't enough, we saw another break. That was enough for the 20th bagel of the year for Swiatek, which is a lot more than the second-best Ostapenko, who had eight so far.
The second set opened with another break, and it was 6-0 3-0 at that time. The Slovenian player simply couldn't do anything,...

Iga Swiatek will face her best friend on the Wta Tour, Kaja Juvan, for a spot in the 4th round of the US Open , and it will be a good one.
Swiatek hasn't been as sharp as she was last year, showing quite a bit of vulnerability. Whether it's pressure or just other players shortening the gap remains to be understood, but it made the season far more enjoyable overall.
Parity makes events more exciting, and we have it this year. There are multiple players capable of winning the US Open, though Swiatek will try to defend her trophy. To get there she'll need to go through Kaja Juvan, a good player who found her rhythm this week.
The Slovenian knows Swiatek well as they're best friends. They played a couple of times so far with the Polish player winning both matches, but the matches were quite exciting. It's unlikely...

Iga Swiatek will face good friend Kaja Juvan in the next round of the US Open , and she's ready to put the friendship on pause.
Swiatek doesn't have many close relationships on the Wta Tour, but Kaja Juvan is certainly one of the closest friendships she has. They played doubles together and have played in the singles as well, and another one of those is coming up at the US Open.
It's a pretty big match for both players, as Swiatek would like to defend her trophy from last year, while this is the best outing from Juvan in a while. They had dinner two days ago, which was confirmed by Swiatek in the post-match press conference after her win over Daria Saville .
It doesn't really matter. We know how to keep it cool and we already played couple of times against each other. Last time in Roland Garros, 2021. You know,...

Iga Swiatek is one match closer to successfully defending her trophy at the US Open as she bested Daria Saville for the 3rd round.
Swiatek didn't play as clean of a match compared to the round one performance , and much of that had to do with what Saville was doing. The Australian came out with a pretty good level overall, hitting the ball consistently. She opened the match with an early break but gave it back right away as Swiatek was still superior from the baseline.
Even so, the Polish player had a lot of errors in that opening set, as she put a lot of power in her shots. It was a very straightforward match, with many powerful rallies from both sides and quite a bit of up-and-down momentum shifting.
Swiatek broke at 4-2 to give herself a chance to seal the opening set, but she failed to give Saville the break back.

Once upon a time, before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from royal duties, the duchess made headlines when she had her royal protection officers try and control what spectators could and could not do during a match at Wimbledon.
Royal watchers may recall the incident in 2019 when fans were ordered not to take any pictures in Meghan’s direction. Well so does journalist Sally Jones because she was there and remembered what she said to a protection officer for Harry’s wife after he gave her those orders.

The story of what happened that day resurfaces every year when the Wimbledon Tennis Championships are underway. And Jones wrote about how it was wrong then for Meghan’s protection officers to stop anyone from taking photos.

Players will get a last chance to fine-tune their form ahead of the second major of the year at the 2023 Strasbourg Open from May 21st to 27th.
With preparations for the Roland Garros in full swing, some players elect to practice more while some elect to compete at a Wta 250 event shortly before the event. One of those tournaments is also the 2023 Strasbourg Open, often also referred to as the Internationaux de Strasbourg.
It's a tournament with a long history that was founded already back in 1987 and in 2023, it will be held for the 37th time. Ahead of the tournament, one thing is clear when looking at the entry list, and that's the fact that we will see a new champion.
Angelique Kerber, who triumphed in a spectacular final over Kaja Juvan last year, gave birth to her first child just recently and she's certainly not ready to return yet.

Melbourne, Jan 16 (Ians) World No.1 Iga Swiatek of Poland began her 2023 Australian Open campaign with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win over Germany’s Jule Niemeier on Monday.
Swiatek will face Colombia’s Camila Osorio in the second round on Wednesday.
A semifinalist in Melbourne last year, Swiatek worked hard in her opener. The 21-year-old made clear before the tournament she was not taking Niemeier lightly, and the German once again proved to be a tough matchup for the World No.1.
Facing each other for the second consecutive Slam, Niemeier had already Swiatek to three sets in their last meeting in the Round of 16 at the US Open.

Paris, May 31 (Ians) Polish tennis ace and world No. 9 Iga Swiatek posted an impressive 6-0, 7-5 win over Slovenia's Kaja Juvan to begin her French Open title defence in style on Monday.
The 20-year-old player, untouchable in the first set where she dropped just nine points but had to work hard in the second, took one hour and 27 minutes to move into the second round and set up a clash with Sweden's world No.60 Rebecca Peterson.
Rebecca came from a set and 2-5 down to beat Shelby Rogers of the USA 6-7(3), 7-6(8), 6-2 in a three-hour slugfest. That result means Iga will avoid the dangerous 47th ranked Shelby, who has to her credit five top 20 wins in the past year.
Two seeded players in the draw, No. 20 Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic and No.16 Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, emerged from three-set tussles with different outcomes.
