It feels like every year around this time I hear (or read) the same thing: "There weren't that many good movies this year." And I always say the same thing: malarkey! Every year is a good year for film ... if you're willing to seek things out. Get outside your comfort zone. Don't only see the latest Disney/Marvel blockbuster. Try new things! None of that is to say my list of the 10 Best Movies of 2022 is full of obscure titles you've never heard of. But I maintain that this year, like last year, and the year before it, was another great year for film. When I compile a list like this, I ask myself: Which films moved me? Which inspired emotions within me that I didn't expect? Which films lingered in my brain long after the end credits rolled? I watch a lot of movies — it's the job — which means...

Colin Farrell is not the type of actor you can easily fit in a box. That may sound like a compliment now, a testament to his range, but there was a time when that might have worked against him, or at the very least: his status as a leading man. In the early aughts, Farrell seemed to be everywhere, trying on every role available to him. His insanely good looks and simmering intensity made him an undeniable box office draw, but the burden of the leading man — the hyper-masculine, hyper-cool version that dominated the 2000s — wasn't always a proper fit. That might be because Farrell, for all his conventional beauty and latent charisma ... is kind of a weird little guy. His intensity can often come off a bit like mania, and he seems much more comfortable in roles that subvert all that aforementioned appeal.
Obviously, there's nothing wrong with that.

As 2022 winds down, like most cinephiles, we’re looking to get our eyes on titles that may have slipped under the radar or simply gone unseen, so—as we do each year—we’re sharing a rundown of the best titles available to watch at home.
Curated from the Best Films of 2022 So Far list we published for the first half of the year, it also includes films we’ve enjoyed the past few months and some we’ve recently caught up with. While our year-end coverage is still to come, including our staff’s top 50 films of 2022, this streaming guide will hopefully be a helpful tool for readers to have a chance to find notable, perhaps underseen, titles of late.
Note that we’re going by U.S. releases and that streaming services are limited solely to the territory as well. If you want to stay up-to-date with new titles being made available,...

What do you do when your wife forces you to watch The Bachelor? You make a horror movie about it, of course… and that’s exactly what director Tim Cruz did. His third film The Final Rose is a slasher-whodunit set on a remote island about a single mother competing on a reality TV dating show called Love at Last. When the contestants become targets of a mysterious masked killer, their search for romance turns into a fight for survival.
Pitched to Fox and Tubi in September 2021, the concept was impressively bought on the spot based on two sentences. Cruz and co-writer Blake Rutledge created the outline in two weeks, completed the first draft in five and shot the film in 12 days during a sweltering June in California. Fittingly released during Filipino American History Month, Cruz expresses pride in it most likely being the first studio-produced film with a Filipino director,...

A longing for emotional feeling is at the heart of this Korean-American director’s work, whether he’s tackling historical epics or a sci-fi film about a malfunctioning robot
Caravaggio, Michelangelo, Cher … many of our finest artists are known by mononyms. South Korean-born American film-maker Kogonada may not be quite as much of a household name (yet), but he’s a name worth getting to know.
His latest film, After Yang, is about a father (Colin Farrell) desperately seeking answers when his daughter’s robot older brother (Justin H Min) shuts down unexpectedly. This daughter (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja) has been adopted by American parents (Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith), but comes from a Chinese background. This is where a robot big brother comes in: in this version of the future, you can purchase siblings who come fully equipped with a lifetime’s worth of cultural heritage of your choosing. Dir: Kogonada. Starring: Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Justin H Min, Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, Haley Lu Richardson. PG, 96 minutes.
After Yang finds no fear in the future – only existential malaise. Set in a vague not-so-distant time, the film follows Kyra (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Jake (Colin Farrell) as they grapple with a broken robot. They had bought Yang, a refurbished android embodied by Justin H Min, to help familiarise their adopted daughter Mika (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja) with her native Chinese culture. But Yang has since stopped working. The android sits hazy in the background of the film, slumped against a wall. A corpse that’s not a corpse.
And so, Jake attempts to have Yang fixed, an endeavour that leads to the discovery of a chip implanted in the robot’s body. It isn’t spyware, as he initially suspected, but a rare, experimental memory bank that has archived the most memorable seconds of each day.

Kogonada’s enigmatic sci-fi drama channels Charlie Kaufman and Philip K Dick as Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner Smith try to fix the faulty AI bot they bought for their adopted daughter
This entirely absorbing movie from Korean-American director Kogonada is adapted from a short story by Alexander Weinstein in his collection Children of the New World; it floats on a Zen updraft of wisdom and ideas. After Yang is an enigmatic sci-fi drama about a family of the future whose AI robot child (a “techno-sapien”) bought by the parents to be a kindly big brother to their adopted Chinese daughter, goes wrong and cannot be fixed. There are touches of Philip K Dick and even Charlie Kaufman, and this is also a pregnant meditation on grief, loss, memory and consciousness.

Near the start of After Yang we see a mixed heritage family that seems literally in sync. It’s the near-future but tea seller Jake (Colin Farrell) still likes the old-fashioned method of using leaves, with items which mimic that swirl and percolation returning as a leitmotif through the film. He and his wife Kyra (Jodie Turner-Smith), daughter Mika (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja) and son Yang (Justin H Min) are taking part in a televised competition in which thousands of families dance in time to a tune and are eliminated if they make too many mistakes. All is not quite as it seems, however, as Yang is in fact a highly sophisticated AI robot, who helps around the house and assists their adopted daughter with cultural questions about her origins.
All of this begins at the end for Yang, who simply refuses to ‘wake’ the next morning, a malfunction that means they have.

This “After Yang” review was originally published on Jan. 22, 2022 from the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
If a day ever comes when social media platform Vine decides to mount a comeback, it should quickly and immediately license “After Yang.” Without exactly trying, South Korean–born American filmmaker Kogonada’s second feature offers a powerful, almost undeniable showcase for the narrative and emotional merits of extreme short-form video content.
The delicately futuristic story of a family sent into a tailspin by the malfunction of its robotic servant and caretaker, “After Yang” examines the way that memory conveys meaning, very often when people absorb or revisit it from a perspective different from the way they originally experienced it. Colin Farrell, Justin H. Min, and Haley Lu Richardson provide different, equally compelling angles from which to view connections in human lives we may not realize are tenuous at best until they’re unable to be reconnected.

It makes sense to start with the dance. After all, After Yang — the chin-stroking, heartbreaking, very humanistic post-human sci-fi weepie from the writer-director Kogonada — is a movie about life as much as it is about death, so we should begin with its most lively, oddly exhilarating sequence. (It hits theaters and begins streaming on Showtime today.) A married couple, Jake (Colin Farrell) and Kyra (Jodie Turner-Smith), are fretting over their busy schedules. He runs an artisanal tea shop in an unnamed metropolis in some not-so-distant future, and business could be better.

After Yang (kogonada)
Following his serenely stunning drama Columbus, video-essayist-turned-director kogonada headed to the future with After Yang. The gorgeous, moving drama about what makes up a family premiered at last year’s Cannes (where our own Rory O’Connor was mixed) and after a few tweaks recently landed at Sundance, where it received quite a rapturous response. Starring Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, Justin H. Min, Sarita Choudhury, Haley Lu Richardson, and Clifton Collins Jr., it follows Farrell as Jake, a father who attempts to repair the malfunction Yang, an android that was a companion to his young daughter. In his second feature, kogonada perfectly depicts quite a seemingly realistic near-future while still retaining the peaceful artistic sensibilities of his debut.

We’ve all surely thought about it from time to time: What would happen if we lost the technological tools that are now such an ingrained part of our everyday lives? How would we survive and work without the internet? What happens when we lose our smartphone? Can we live in a house where we have to turn lights on and off or adjust the thermostat instead of having Alexa do it?
After Yang, the second full-length movie from director Kogonada addresses these questions in far more emotional and existential terms. Set in the not-too-distant future in an unnamed city, with hints of some kind of past catastrophe in the background, the story follows a man named Jake (Colin Farrell) as he desperately attempts to get his little daughter’s android companion, Yang (Justin H. Many artists strive to find meaning in their work, but for kogonada it’s the pursuit that provides the meaning. In a way, if he were to “find it” that wouldn’t be nearly as special as the everlasting exploration and attempt to achieve that enlightenment.
His sophomore feature, After Yang, asks some of the biggest questions about life in the gentlest of ways. In a world where robotic children are purchased as live-in babysitters, the malfunctioning of Yang (Justin H. Min) leads his father figure Jake (Colin Farrell) on a quest for a solution. Obsessing over this need to make his family feel whole again, alongside his wife Kyra (Jodie Turner-Smith) and their daughter Mika (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja), Jake is able to glimpse snippets of Yang’s recorded memories, where he finds that his android son had a whole life he never knew a thing about.

Justin H. Min graduated from Cornell University with degrees in government and English, and after dabbling in law and a stint in journalism, he had a “crisis” moment where he decided to pursue acting. A recurring role on the Netflix hit “The Umbrella Academy” as Ben Hargreeves proved so popular he became a regular. Now he’s making his feature film debut in Kogonada’s “After Yang,” which A24 releases March 4, in which he plays an android companion to a young girl named Mika (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja). When Yang breaks down, Mika’s father (Colin Farrell) goes on a journey to fix him that examines grief, loss and what it means to be human.

It’s The Batman time. As such, there aren’t many studio pictures hitting theaters to combat the cowl this month. So, with Turning Red going to streaming, the time for counter programming through indie and foreign titles is here. Hopefully your local theaters comply. If not, there are a few below hitting VOD too. You can go to Gotham and still return home for something more low-key.
And there’s always Oscars catch-up with the last few nominees finding their way to digital and/or streaming this month. That also means the alternative poster game has begun to increase in the lead-up to March 27’s ceremony. Here are some of my faves from Needle Design, Eileen Steinbach, Haley Turnbull, and Scott Saslow:

"I wish I had a real memory." "What do you mean?" A24 has unveiled the official trailer for After Yang, the newest film from the acclaimed filmmaker known as "Kogonada", who made quite an impression with his feature debut Columbus from a few years ago. After Yang premiered at last year's Cannes Film Festival to some rave reviews (here's mine) and it also just played at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival this month. Set in the near future, a family reckons with questions of love, connection, and loss after their A.I. helper unexpectedly breaks down. Yang is the name of the android, and when they take him in for repair they learn there's much more to him than they thought. The film stars Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Justin H. Min, Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, and Haley Lu Richardson. One of the best sci-fi films to see this year, one of my favorites from Cannes.

Following his serenely stunning drama Columbus, video-essayist-turned-director Kogonada headed to the future with After Yang. A gorgeous, moving drama about what makes up a family, it premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival (where our own Rory O’Connor was mixed) and after a few tweaks recently landed at Sundance, where it received quite a rapturous response. Ahead of a March 4 theatrical release from A24 and digital release on Showtime, the first trailer has landed.
Starring Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, Justin H. Min, Sarita Choudhury, Haley Lu Richardson, and Clifton Collins Jr., the film follows Farrell as Jake, a father who attempts to repair the malfunction Yang, an android that was a companion to his young daughter. As the trailer reveals, Kogonada perfectly depicts quite a seemingly realistic near future while still retaining the peaceful artistic sensibilities of his debut.

Artificially intelligent android. Conspiracy theorist technician. Technology museum curator. I admit: when I first saw the synopsis of “After Yang,” I immediately thought of blockbuster science-fiction movies like “Blade Runner” (1982) or “Ghost in the Shell” (1995). And yes, in a way, Kogonada’s sophomore feature film prods familiar questions of authenticity. What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be a family? What does it mean to be Chinese – whether you are ethnically born, adopted, or programmed to be? These questions are more pointers than they are answered, however. This year’s winner of the Sundance Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize (and A24 acquisition from Cannes) contemplates upon quiet visions of the future, one that is defined more by reflection than it is by progress.

Kogonada's 2017 feature debut, "Columbus," was one of the standout films from that year's Sundance Film Festival, and the director is finally back with his second movie. "After Yang" is a sci-fi story, but it continues Kogonada's cinematic explorations of grief, loss, lineage, and finding beauty in unexpected places.
Sometime in the future, Yang (Justin H. Min) breaks down. He's a quiet, pleasant android who was purchased to serve as a big brother figure to an adopted young girl named Mika (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja) and teach her about her Chinese heritage....

Benedetta Sometimes it only takes one film to fire up a festival. That film, this year, came in the shape Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta, one of a handful that had originally been selected to screen here in 2020, and handed another slot twelve months later. It was Verhoeven’s first film since Elle (also screened in the official competition here back in 2016), and it promised a period piece cribbed from a book by Judith C. Brown: Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy. Which itself was based on the real-life story of Benedetta, a 17th century Italian nun-turned-abbess of Pescia, Tuscany, put on trial for a love affair with a fellow nun. Verhoeven has never shied away from in-your-face sexual content, so the marriage between director and story felt ripe for all kinds of excesses. But little could have ever prepared me for the wild riot Benedetta would ultimately turn into.

The premise of After Yang might require a mild digestif. A work of speculative science fiction from the video-essayist-turned-director kogonada, it concerns the inner workings of an unconventional family: adoptive father Jake (played by Colin Farrel), the proprietor of an artisanal tea shop; his wife Kyra (Jodie Turner-Smith), busy and detached; their daughter Mika (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja), an adopted child from China; and Yang, the android they purchased to be her ersatz older brother. Near the film’s start Yang breaks down and, with Mika distraught, Jake must find a way to get him back online. On his travels he discovers that Yang’s hardware has been custom fitted to record and save a few seconds of video each day, a moment that the A.I. finds most valuable; or, in other words, to find evidence of an inner emotional life. Phew.

Perhaps more speculative than “Columbus” yet no less poignant, Kogonada’s second feature “After Yang” is
The story, adapted from a wry piece of short fiction by the writer Alexander Weinstein, is a wisp of an idea that doesn’t amount to a plot so much as a prompt. At some unknown point in the near future, an android named Yang (Justin H. Min) stops working. Jake (Colin Farrell), the tea seller who bought the refurbished “technosapien” as a big sibling and cultural anchor for the young daughter he and his wife adopted from China, drags the uncannily lifelike machine down to the local tech center in much the same way someone might take a cracked iPhone to the Genius Bar, because that’s what you do when a piece of technology dies.
But replacing Yang’s role in Jake’s house won’t be as simple as buying a newer model.
