Think about some of the most iconic moments in modern TV history, and there’s a good chance Don Mischer was in the control room.
Michael Jackson performing the Moonwalk for the first time on “Motown 25.” Muhammad Ali making a surprise appearance to light the Atlanta Olympics opening ceremony torch. Prince pulling off arguably the most lauded Super Bowl halftime show ever, in the pouring rain. President Obama’s historic inauguration.
Mischer was behind all those events — and too many more to mention, including three Oscar telecasts. Each one has a story, and as Mischer recalls, the behind- the-scenes drama was often harrowing. Ask him about the time he got into a fight with authorities in China, leading his team to prep a van in case they had to flee for the U.S. Embassy. Or the time he and Barbara Walters got dangerously close to offending the shah of Iran,...

Ivy Snitzer, the woman who played Gwyneth Paltrow‘s plus-size body double in the TV staple 2001 movie Shallow Hal, has revealed how weight loss surgery left her “starving to death” following the film’s release. Speaking to Amelia Tait for a TinyLetter.com post, Snitzer opened up about her time working on the romantic comedy, which starred Jack Black as a superficial man who falls in love with a 300-pound woman after being hypnotized into only seeing a person’s inner beauty. While the film was criticized for being “fatphobic,” Snitzer described it as “progressive” for the time. “At that point, if you saw someone obese in a movie, they were a villain,” said Snitzer, who was a 20-year-old aspiring actress and comedian when she landed the part. “Whereas [Paltrow’s character] Rosemary was cool, she was popular, she had friends.” Vince Bucci/Getty Images Snitzer also spoke positively about her time on set,...

Rarely does a piece of art serve as the inspiration for a film’s location. But, this was the case with the beach house that Robert De Niro’s Neil McCauley called home in the 1995 action classic Heat. Director Michael Mann hired renowned film scout Lori Balton to find a house that resembled Alex Colville’s painting “Pacific.”
“Pacific” depicts a man staring at the ocean through a huge picture window while a rifle sits on a table behind him. And Balton did not disappoint. After searching the entire Southern California coast, the house she finally settled on was a perfect match for Colville’s painting. And now, for fans of the crime thriller, owning a piece of cinematic history is within reach. As it turns out, McCauley’s iconic home is up for sale for a cool $21 million.
