There’s no doubting that the budgets and ambitions of music videos have dwindled since the glory days of MTV. We live in the age of TikTok-targeted ephemera. Yet miraculously, 2023 gave a much-needed shot of cinematic life to the form.
The best videos of the year emphasized meticulous technique over virality, offering intimate, impressionistic portraits of their respective artists’ interior lives and thoughts. Lana Del Rey and Lucy Dacus subverted Old Hollywood tropes, with a meta riff on studio system-era glamor and a lesbian tweaking of Wizard of Oz, respectively.
Others went bigger. Troye Sivan brought back the sheen and unabashed sexuality of Y2K pop princesses with a drag transformation that represents the performance of his career to date. Doja Cat took a maximalist approach to portraying the simultaneous highs and horrors of stardom, while Olivia Rodrigo constructed an elaborate, blood-splattered supernatural story to rival The Lost Boys.

Sampha has detailed his new album, Lahai, out on October 20th via Young. What’s more, the English singer has also mapped out an accompanying fall tour and shared the latest single, “Only.”
The album title references the name of Sampha’s paternal grandfather, which is also the artist’s middle name. Clocking in at 14 tracks, Lahai features contributions from Yaeji, Léa Sen, Sheila Maurice Grey (Kokoroko), Ibeyi, Morgan Simpson (Black Midi), Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves, and Kwake Bass. It’s described in a press release as a “communal affair” in which Sampha explores human connection while crossing genres including jazz, soul, rap, dance, jungle, and West African music.
Sampha’s supporting tour will kick off with a three-date London residency at Hackney Church beginning October 12th ahead of North American dates in Chicago, Toronto, New York City, and more. It will wrap up in December with a brief run...

Mercury Prize-winning singer and producer Sampha returned Wednesday with “Spirit 2.0,” his first solo song in over six years.
While Sampha’s acclaimed 2017 album Process found the singer tackling grief head-on, “Spirit 2.0” strikes a more optimistic tone.
“It’s about the importance of connection to both myself and others, and the beauty and harsh realities of just existing. It’s about acknowledging those moments when you need help – that requires real strength,” Sampha said of the track in a statement.

It’s felt like eons since we’ve last heard proper solo music from Sampha, but he’s ended that drought today with “Spirit 2.0.” It marks his first release as lead artist since 2017.
Driven by a skittering beat, “Spirit 2.0” is the first taste of what will be Sampha’s highly-anticipated sophomore album. boasts musical contributions from Yussef Dayes, El Guincho, and Owen Pallet, alongside guest vocals from Yaeji and Lisa-Kaindé Diaz of Ibeyi.

Jeremy O. Harris is a bona fide Broadway-meets-Hollywood multihyphenate. And at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the Tony Award-nominated playwright and producer on HBO’s Euphoria added another title to his resume: an actor in Sean Price Williams’ The Sweet East. The drama follows a young woman traveling along the northeastern coast of the United States and stars Talia Ryder, Jacob Elordi, Simon Rex and Ayo Edebiri.
The film premiered during the Directors’ Fortnight portion of the festival on May 18, and in a FaceTime Audio interview en route to another event the following day, Harris describes the cast’s approach to the red carpet as “walking down the street like we were in some fantastic, French behind-the-scenes documentary of what it means to have your debut feature at Cannes.”
For Harris, street style transitioned into carpet style effortlessly thanks to the vision of Mel Ottenberg, celebrity stylist, Interview Magazine‘s editor-in-chief and Harris’ friend.

In recent years, a handful of Asian American musicians have made a name for themselves in the American music scene. There's indie rock artist Mitski, Michelle Zauner of the genre-defying band Japanese Breakfast, and house DJ and producer Yaeji. The list grows a bit longer if we count Grammy-winning mainstream artists like H.E.R., Olivia Rodrigo, Bruno Mars, and Anderson .Paak, all of whom have some Asian heritage. However, they're the notable exceptions in an industry in which Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (Aapi) are still grossly underrepresented and underpromoted, despite the wealth of musical talent that exists within the community.

With the rise of information technology, we have also entered the era of the social networks and thus the era of the new self, one which is to a smaller degree assessed by the individual, but by a wide audience. Beauty blogs as well as the growing and economically legitimized demand to optimize yourself, societies which have a tendency to evaluate a person based on outer appearance have now found the perfect platform to engage in this endeavor, possibly leading to a less tolerant and more conformist society. Recently, novels such as Han Kang intriguing “The Vegetarian” have attempted to shed some light on the increasingly problematic relationship between a superficial society, tradition and patriarchy. In his animated feature “Beauty Water”, first-time director Cho Kyung-hun deals with similar themes, but uses a genre framework to further explore the interconnections of social media, its obsession with beauty and how it changes...

Directed by Cho Kyung-hun, the film has been described as follows: "In a society as obsessed with physical appearance as modern South Korea, ugliness is a fate worse than death. For overweight, unsightly Yaeji, though, a fast but suspicious solution to her woes may soon make her wish she were dead. Beauty is skin-deep, but body horror chills to the bone!" An animated film from South Korea, Beauty Water sounds very intriguing, a notion that is amplified by a new teaser. The description above comes from Fantasia Festival, where the film had been scheduled to make its North American premiere recently. That fell through, unfortunately, though the fest did present "a 20-min. short film edit" in its place. In any event, a teaser has now been...

Clairo performed a track from her debut album Immunity, called “I Wouldn’t Ask You,” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday night. The vulnerable rendition began with the 21-year-old artist leading a group of children in singing the song’s chorus, over a stark piano: “I wouldn’t ask you to take care of me/Oh, and I wouldn’t ask you to take care of me.” Opening the song up to keyboard, guitar and drums, Clairo still channeled her trademark “bedroom pop” and delivered an introspective performance of the track.

Charli Xcx, Clairo and Yaeji traverse regret from the fallout of a past relationship on their new song “February 2017.” The song will appear on Charli Xcx’s forthcoming Charli, which arrives on September 13th.
On the new track, Charli and her song conspirators reflect on the past, which builds from apologies into a euphoric synth-laden swell with stuttering electronic rhythms as they seek forgiveness. Charli and Clairo take turns with lines in the verses. “I keep saying I’m all right/But every single night when I cut off the lights/I feel like crying.

Charli Xcx has released her latest collaborative track from her upcoming third studio album, Charli, out on September 13th. The song, “Warm,” features vocals from the band Haim, which describe a relationship on the rocks over a subdued electronic beat.
“You’ve gotta tell me the reason/Why we can’t fall in love,” Charli pleads in Autotune over and over in the song’s chorus, which is also echoed by Haim’s trademark harmonies.

Charli Xcx has contributed a new song, “Miss U,” to the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack. The release of “Miss U” and the soundtrack coincides with the Netflix series’ Season 3 premiere Friday.

Charli Xcx and Sky Ferreira have teamed up for a synth-heavy club banger of a breakup song, “Cross You Out.” The track is the fourth single from Charli Xcx’s Charli, her third studio album, out September 13th.
“Cross You Out” sees the two pop idols finding closure and liberation in the end of a relationship: “When you’re not around/When you’re not around/I’ll finally cross you out.” Over synths that soar as high as a Gothic cathedral, Ferreira sings, “Century of tears/Sadness was another denial.
