While Joe Biden and Donald Trump have kept their in-person campaigning to a minimum so far this election cycle, third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has done everything he can do steal the spotlight, holding event after event with celebrity supporters. Now he can add another to the roster: actor Kevin Spacey.
Spacey, who faced more than a dozen accusations of sexual misconduct or assault since the #MeToo movement gripped the culture in 2017, appeared to indicate in a tweet on Monday that Kennedy had been there for him at his lowest.

The Most Popular AI Celebrity Chat Bots Are Really Weird - Main Image
Meta recently rolled out an online chatbot app while utilizing AI technology, where users can interact with their preferred celebrities on multiple social media platforms. That said, here's why the most popular AI celebrity chatbots on Meta are weird.
Meta Launches AI Celebrity Chatbots
In September last year, Meta AI launched a brand-new AI experience across social media apps such as Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
Meta not only generates photorealistic images for any AI prompts for users within the U.S., but can also interact with 28 more AI chatbots based on prominent pop culture icons and influencers such as Snoop Dogg, Tom Brady, Kendall Jenner, and more.
While U.S. users can interact with various celebrities, there's a catch. These chatbots are not and do not accurately portray the original actors and influencers, but for good reason.

A group of authors, including Sarah Silverman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, were dealt an arguably expected setback in a copyright infringement case against OpenAI. On Monday, Feb. 12, a federal judge threw out some, but not all of the claims contained in the lawsuit, which alleges OpenAI’s ChatGPT program was trained on copyrighted books.
The ruling mirrors a decision in a separate case brought by some of the same author plaintiffs (including Silverman) against Meta over how it trains its artificial intelligence language models. Like Meta, OpenAI had asked a judge...

A federal judge has dismissed most of a lawsuit brought by Sarah Silverman, Ta-Nehisi Coates and other authors against OpenAI over the use of copyrighted books to train its generative artificial intelligence chatbot, marking another ruling from a court questioning core theories of liability advanced by creators in the multifront legal battle.
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin, in an order issued on Feb. 12, refused to allow claims for vicarious copyright infringement, negligence and unjust enrichment to proceed against the Sam Altman-led firm. Following in the footsteps of another judge overseeing an identical suit against Meta, Martinez-Olguin rejected one of the authors’ main claims that every answer generated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT is an infringing work made possible only by information extracted from copyrighted material.
The authors failed to cite “any particular output” that is “substantially similar — or similar at all — to their books,” the court explained. They were given leave to amend,...

Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly working on bringing “third-party chat” support on Android in order to comply with the new European Union (EU) regulations. The new feature will offer users the ability to communicate with each other using different apps, according to WABetaInfo.
For instance, someone from the Signal app could send a message to a WhatsApp user, even without a WhatsApp account.
The feature comes just days after the European Commission confirmed that Meta fits the definition of a “gatekeeper” under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (Dma), which mandates that communication software like WhatsApp allow interoperability with third-party messaging apps by March 2024.
According to the report, the feature is still in development and is not ready yet as it appears empty and not accessible to users.
Moreover, the report said that WhatsApp has a six-month period to align the app with the new regulations to provide its interoperability service in the European Union.

Along with India, the company rolled out the feature in Argentina, Mexico, the UK, and the US.
“Today, we’ll start rolling out keyword search in English and Spanish, in countries where most people post in those languages — such as Argentina, India, Mexico, the UK, and the US — on both mobile and web,” Meta said in a blogpost on Thursday.
Meta also said that it is “working on bringing the feature to other languages and countries as soon as we can”.
Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg also shared the development in a Threads post.

Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly teaming up with LG to release a future version of its high-end Quest Pro virtual reality headset in 2025 to compete with Apple Vision Pro.
The resulting headset is expected to cost around $2,000 and use LG displays as well as other components from LG subsidiaries such as LG Innotek, reports The Verge.
The news was first spotted by UploadVR.
The report also stated that Meta will release a low-end Quest headset in 2024 for under $200.
The new high-end headset will be called the “Meta Quest 4 Pro,” breaking Meta’s current practice of keeping the Quest and Quest Pro lineup numbers separate.
The current Meta Quest Pro costs $999, so it is possible that both companies will invest in more powerful hardware to compete with Apple Vision Pro, the report mentioned.
At the same time, Meta will soon release the more affordable Meta Quest 3 for $499.

Update: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made no mention of a cage match with rival Elon Musk on the company’s earnings call, but he did suggest that the X/Twitter owner’s missteps contributed to the dramatic growth in sign ups to the recently launched Threads.
“It could be that this is such an idiosyncratic because of all the factors that were happening around Twitter, or X, as I guess it is called now,” he told investors on the company’s earnings call. “So it is hard to say. When something works or doesn’t, you can often point to the reason why it did or didn’t, and I think there is an interesting intellectual question of whether you could have known that.”
Meta’s Threads launched on July 5, and reached 100 users in about five days its debut, Zuckerberg confirmed. But some studies have shown that engagement has fallen since then.

San Francisco, June 26 (Ians) Dubbed as the fight of the century, the anticipated showdown between Twitter-owner Elon Musk and Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg could still happen, in jiu jitsu style.
Musk had earlier tweeted that he would be “up for a cage match” with Zuckerberg, to which the latter posted a screenshot of the Tesla CEO’s tweet with the caption “send me location”.
Last week, in a series of tweets, Elon Musk’s mother Maye said that it is a “great relief” that “the fight has now been cancelled”.
But on Sunday, Lex Fridman, host of the famous Lex Fridman Podcast, posted a video of him training jiu jitsu with Zuckerberg.
“I look forward to training with @elonmusk as well. It’s inspiring to see both Elon and Mark taking on the martial arts journey,” he said in an indication that the fight between Musk and Zuckerberg might still happen.

Canadian legislation designed to get U.S. digital tech giants to pay local publishers for news snippets shared or repurposed on their platforms has become law.
But passage of Bill C-18, also known as the Online News Act, has so far not convinced Meta and Google to negotiate commercial licensing deals with Canadian publishers for their local platforms. Instead, Meta announced it will block Canadians from viewing or sharing news on its Facebook and Instagram sites north of the border.
“We have repeatedly shared that in order to comply with Bill C-18, passed today in Parliament, content from news outlets, including news publishers and broadcasters, will no longer be available to people accessing our platforms in Canada,” Meta, a division of Facebook, said in a statement Thursday.

San Francisco, June 22 (Ians) Twitter-owner Elon Musk recently tweeted that he would be “up for a cage match” with Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In response, the CEO of Meta posted a screenshot of Musk’s tweet with the caption “send me location.”
It all started on Wednesday, when Musk replied to a tweet about news that Meta will release a Twitter competitor.
“I’m sure Earth can’t wait to be exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options. At least it will be ‘sane’. Was worried there for a moment,” Musk said.
To this, a user replied, “Better be careful @elonmusk I heard he does the ju jitsu now.”
“I’m up for a cage match if he is lol,” Twitter-owner replied.

New Delhi, June 20 (Ians) Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced a new privacy feature ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ to provide users more control over their incoming calls on WhatsApp.
This new feature helps to automatically screen out spam, scams and calls from unknown people for increased protection, the company said in a statement.
When the feature is enabled, unknown calls will not ring on the users’ phone, but will be visible in their call list.
Additionally, the company has introduced ‘Privacy Checkup’ to help make sure that everyone knows about the options of protection on the messaging platform.
This step-by-step feature guides users through important privacy settings to help them choose the right level of protection, all in one place.
“Protecting the privacy of your messages remains the driving force behind what we’re building at WhatsApp,” the company said.

San Francisco, June 3 (Ians) A court has ruled that Meta (formerly Facebook) does employ third-party content moderators, sending a blow to the social network which said it is not the moderators’ employer.
In the lawsuit filed in March, 184 moderators in Kenya had sued Meta and its content review partner in Africa, a company called Sama, for unlawful dismissal.
They also alleged that Meta’s new content review partner on the continent, Majorel, blacklisted them on instruction by the tech giant, reports TechCrunch.
Justice Byram Ongaya of Kenya’s employment and labor relations court said in a ruling that Sama was “merely an agent or manager.”
Sama disputed this, saying “Meta is a client of Sama’s and Sama is not legally empowered to act on behalf of Meta.”

San Francisco, June 1 (Ians) Meta has threatened to pull news from Facebook and Instagram if California’s Journalism Preservation Act passes through.
Once the bill is cleared, big tech companies will need to pay a “journalism usage fee” whenever they distribute local news content on their respective platforms.
“If the Journalism Preservation Act passes, we will be forced to remove news from Facebook and Instagram rather than pay into a slush fund that primarily benefits big, out-of-state media companies under the guise of aiding California publishers,” Meta said in a statement.
According to Mark Zuckerberg-run company, the bill fails to recognise that publishers and broadcasters put their content “on our platform themselves and that substantial consolidation in California’s local news industry came over 15 years ago, well before Facebook was widely used”.
Meta further said that it is disappointing that California lawmakers appear to be prioritising the best interests...

Naomi Osaka is staying busy while pregnant as she's getting ready to release a digital apparel line in cooperation with Meta.
Naomi Osaka is away from tennis after announcing her pregnancy earlier this year and she'll be out of the sport for the remainder of the year. Her plan is to come back to the Wta Tour in 2024, preferably at the Australian Open where she lifted trophies in the past.
The Japanese player has struggled with tennis prior to her pregnancy being a long time removed from any kind of top level. All of that together with the pregnancy saw her drop to her lowest ranking since 2014 but she is backed by many to come back strong and return to the top 10 once she finally starts playing tennis again.

London, May 22 (Ians) The Irish Data Protection Commission on Monday fined Meta (formerly Facebook) a record $1.3 billion fine over violating data transfer rules in the European Union (EU).
The Irish watchdog said that Meta violated the General Data Protection Regulation (Gdpr) which came into force on May 25, 2018.
The Wall Street Journal was first to report about the landmark penalty on Meta.
The ruling applies only to Facebook and not Instagram and WhatsApp.
Meta said it would appeal against the Irish watchdog’s decision.
“Without the ability to transfer data across borders, the internet risks being carved up into national and regional silos, restricting the global economy and leaving citizens in different countries unable to access many of the shared services we have come to rely on,” Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs said in a statement.

Instagram’s Twitter clone comes as Yaccarino takes the reigns of the company owned by Elon Musk. Twitter has become unstable since Musk took over with many advertisers pausing their spending or fleeing the app altogether. Yaccarino, a former NBCUniversal advertising executive, will be tasked to welcome advertisers back following months of uncertainty with the platform.
Twitter users that feel uncomfortable on the app have been looking for alternatives to the platform finding refuge in similar apps like Mastodon, Hive and Bluesky, which has Twitter founder Jack Dorsey on its board of directors.

San Francisco, May 19 (Ians) Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly going to start laying off more employees next week in its third round of job cuts.
The layoffs will affect Meta’s business departments and could affect thousands of employees, reports Vox.
“The third wave is going to happen next week. That affects everybody in the biz teams, including in my orgs,” Meta president of global affairs Nick Clegg, was quoted as saying.
However, the exact number has not been confirmed, but it is expected that the company will lay off approximately 6,000 employees in this round.
In March, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company planned to cut 10,000 jobs by the end of May, following an 11,000-job cut in November last year.
The tech giant cut around 4,000 of the planned 10,000 positions last month, leaving nearly 6,000 positions potentially on the chopping block.
At the end of 2022, Meta had around 86,000 employees, the report said.

New Delhi, May 19 (Ians) Meta (formerly Facebook) is building its first-generation custom silicon chip for running artificial intelligence (AI) models, saying its AI compute needs will grow dramatically over the next decade as we break new ground in AI research.
Called Mtia (Meta Training and Inference Accelerator), the in-house, custom accelerator chip will provide greater compute power and efficiency than CPUs, and is customised for internal workloads.
“By deploying both Mtia chips and GPUs, we’ll deliver better performance, decreased latency and greater efficiency for each workload,” said Santosh Janardhan, VP and Head of Infrastructure at Meta.
The company also plans a new AI-optimised data centre design and the second phase of its 16,000 Gpu supercomputer for AI research.
“These efforts — and additional projects still underway — will enable us to develop larger, more sophisticated AI models and then deploy them efficiently at scale,” Janardhan added.

New Delhi, May 15 (Ians) Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Monday announced a new WhatsApp feature called Chat Lock to safeguard intimate chats.

San Francisco, May 10 (Ians) Meta (formerly Facebook) has announced that it is updating and expanding its Ads on Reels test (or monetisation programme) on Facebook, making it possible for more creators to earn money for their engaging reels.
The company said it will start testing the programme on Instagram in the coming weeks.
Meta is also evolving the programme by testing a new payout model that pays creators based on the performance of their public reels, not the earnings of ads on their reels.

The company said it will start testing the programme on Instagram in the coming weeks.
Meta is also evolving the programme by testing a new payout model that pays creators based on the performance of their public reels, not the earnings of ads on their reels.

More monetization options are coming to Facebook Reels. More than a year after Meta introduced ads on the Facebook version of its short-form format, it is expanding payouts for select creators.
Under Meta’s new system, Facebook Reels ad payouts will be allocated based on a performance-based model. That means that creators will be paid based on the number of views their public short-form videos get — not the number of ads that run next to those clips.
In a blog post, Meta claimed that its payout structure will reduce volatility for creators without negatively impacting the amount of available ad inventory. Even if a Facebook Reel struggles to generate ad impressions, it will still be eligible for monetization.
“Payouts will be determined by the number of plays,” reads the post. “The better a creator’s reel performs, the more they can earn. Over time we may begin to incorporate other signals into payouts.

New Delhi, May 9 (Ians) Meta on Tuesday announced the launch of #MadeonReels, a programme designed to take the power of Reels Ads to brands across verticals in the country.
The programme is aimed at enabling brands to supercharge business results through entertaining storytelling on Reels, and by leveraging the power of the thriving creator ecosystem in India.
At the start of the year, Meta in India decided to work with leading brands across categories to determine the impact Reels Ads could have on their marketing objectives.
Campaign results from brands such as Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk, Meesho, Navi, Maruti Nexa, Snitch, Amazon Prime Video and Tanishq showed that Reels Ads drove strong business outcomes across parameters such as ad-recall, message association, and conversions.
Based on the encouraging results, Meta is now launching #MadeOnReels for the wider ecosystem, inviting briefs from brands across verticals to be a part of this programme.

It won’t just be Chris Rock keeping Jada Pinkett Smith’s name out their mouth, as her online talk show, Red Table Talk, has joined the lengthy list of series canceled following Facebook Watch’s shuttering. So maybe she has time for G.I. Jane 2 after all…
Jada Pinkett Smith addressed the cancellation in an Instagram post, writing, “We are so grateful to have had such a beautiful partnership with Facebook Watch and we are sorry to see the entire team disband. We wish everyone well in their new journeys to come…We at Red Table are in talks of finding a new home and we’ll see you soon.” Red Table Talk launched in 2018, running for five seasons and nearly 130 episodes.
While the cancellation of Jada Pinkett Smith’s show is a direct result of Meta shutting down Facebook Watch originals, one would be justly skeptical if Westbrook...

New Delhi, April 29 (Ians) Meta-owned Instagram is testing a new tool that will let users add songs to their photo carousels on the platform.

Zuckerberg also said that the Instagram is testing a new way to add music to Notes.
Meanwhile, AI recommendations have driven a more than 24 per cent increase in time spent on Instagram since Meta launched TikTok-rival short-video app Reels.

Add Meta to the list of digital media giants that are pivoting away from original programming. As the company formerly known as Facebook endures another round of layoffs, it is ending its current slate of Facebook Watch originals.
Facebook Watch became a thriving hub for both scripted and unscripted shows after the 2017 hire of MTV vet Mina Lefevre, who became Meta’s Head of Development and Programming. According to Deadline, Meta has let Lefevre go as part of a three-part round of layoffs that will ultimately affect more than 10,000 employees. Those cuts come on the heels of Meta’s November 2022 downsizing, when it let go of 11,000 workers.
During her six-year tenure at Meta, Lefevre helped assemble a varied programming library. The Facebook Watch lineup included some shows that came over from MTV, a number of creator-centric vehicles, and brand-new originals like Red Table Talk, which even earned Facebook a Daytime Emmy nomination.
