As someone who [A] willingly watched Glee until the bitter end, and has seen Wicked enough times that I’ve started wondering what the Wicked Witch’s talking-goat teacher does after hours, I was embarrassingly excited for Monday’s American Idol.
Sure, I was curious to find out which singers would snag the final seven open spots in this season’s Top 14 — but not nearly as curious as I was to see just how thoroughly Ada Vox would nail “Defying Gravity” alongside Rachel Berry herself, Lea Michele. Honestly, it’s the kind of once-in-a-blue-moon event that gay prophets have been documenting...

Monday night’s “American Idol” (April 2) delivered the final judgement, with judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan narrowing down the contestants from 50 to 24. One by one, each singer had to look fate in the eyes, and with that came several shocking eliminations.
First on the stage was 16-year old Layla Spring, who bravely took on the Ike and Tina Turner classic “Proud Mary.” Although Bryan said the judges were nervous about putting a teenager through, Spring’s vibrato improved (a directive Perry instructed her to work on), and she made it to the top 24.
Michael Woodward, who seemed so green during auditions, had clearly blossomed in the weeks that followed. On Sunday night’s show, he impressed with the song choice of “Maybe This Time” from “Cabaret,” and on Monday he picked an equally risky tune, “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette. “American Idol” may be on a new network (ABC) but has the same host (Ryan Seacrest) and is following the same format that worked so well for 15 seasons on Fox. After five episodes devoted to the auditions, the show shifted to Hollywood where 169 hopefuls had to sing once again for the three judges: Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.
