Longtime high-profile image architect Law Roach has shared that he will be leaving his profession, mentioning issues “politics” and “false narratives.”
From Zendaya to Kerry Washington to Megan Thee Stallion, there is hardly a celebrity that hasn’t collaborated with the Chicago-born stylist. But on Tuesday, the stylist shared that he would no longer be moving forward in the fashion industry, saying he is officially retiring.
“My cup is empty,” Roach began in an Instagram post, which was accompanied by an image of signed that read “Retired.”

HBO Max’s cancelation of voguing competition series Legendary has not gone down well in the LGBTQ+ community.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) organization has slammed the move, which came last week as part of a swathe of cuts and cancelations at the embattled Warner Bros. Discovery streamer.
The series was fronted by Mc Dashaun Wesley with judges including Leiomy Maldonado, Jameela Jamil, Law Roach, Megan Thee Stallion and Keke Palmer and was one of the most inclusive non-scripted series on television.
“Legendary raised the bar for inclusivity on TV programming on so many different levels, especially when it comes to celebrating Black and queer culture,” GLAAD noted. “While Legendary is unfortunately just the latest LGBTQ-inclusive programming to get canceled by their network this year, the creative team and Scout Productions prioritized uplifting unheard talent and voices and we’re hopeful that these types of stories are able to be told again.

HBO Max has dropped the ball, cancelling the voguing competition series Legendary after three seasons, TVLine has confirmed.
This is HBO Max’s second unscripted cancellation in two days, following Monday’s axing of FBoy Island. It’s also the latest in a long list of HBO Max casualties triggered by the Warner Bros. Reality competition series “Legendary” has been canceled at HBO Max after three seasons.
The news comes just one day after Variety exclusively reported the cancellation of “FBoy Island,” another fan-favorite unscripted project at the streamer.
The series took place within the New York ballroom scene, following different houses of vogue dancers as they competed in balls and fashion showcases in order to achieve “legendary” status. Among the cast were Mc Dashaun Wesley and DJ MikeQ as well as celebrity judges Law Roach, Jameela Jamil, Leiomy Maldonado and Megan Thee Stallion. Season 1 premiered in 2020, while Season 2 came in 2021 and Season 3 premiered in May of this year.
Like with “FBoy Island,” the end of “Legendary” points to a larger story within the continued impact of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. CEO David Zaslav brought with him not just a stacked unscripted slate from across the Discovery brands, but also a rather brutal cost-cutting spirit.

Exclusive: The reality cancellations are coming thick and fast at HBO Max.
The streamer has canceled voguing competition series Legendary after three seasons.
It comes after it emerged that FBoy Island was canceled after two seasons.
Similar to the Nikki Glaser-fronted dating series, Legendary is a relatively expensive show for a streaming service that pulled out of original unscripted orders earlier this summer. At the time, the streamer noted that while it wasn’t ordering any new unscripted originals, it would consider renewing existing shows but FBoy Island and Legendary are more expensive than the David Zaslav-run company would like to spend on unscripted shows.
It’s also a blow for diversity in unscripted programming as Legendary was one of the most inclusive reality shows on air and praised by GLAAD.
Legendary features a group of voguing houses, each featuring five performers and a leader called the house mother.

As the choreographer of Legendary, Tanisha Scott’s job is to ensure every house’s moves look polished and ready to wow the judges. With only three days of prep with a house before the ball begins, she needs to make sure they are ready and up to the task.
Legendary is an HBO reality competition where ten houses from the ballroom scene compete in nine balls for a 100,000 prize. Each ball has a theme, like Animal Queendom or Hip-Opera, and a challenge where the choreography must highlight a specific specific element of vogue.
The competition is presented by Dashaun Wesley and judged Jameela Jamil, Leiomy Maldonado, Law Roach, and Keke Palmer. Each judge has something special that they are looking for in every ball, so Scott knows that each performance she choreographs needs to be clean, skilled, fashionable and entertaining.

Scout Productions, the company behind Netflix’s Queer Eye and HBO Max’s Legendary, is looking to take the “secret sauce” of those two unscripted shows in to new worlds that have yet to have had their moment on television.
Co-founder David Collins and President Eric Korsh told Deadline that during the pandemic they doubled down investment in developing new projects that could tell authentic, diverse stories in the non-scripted space.
Korsh said it is looking to work with “unheard” voices or “people you don’t expect to see on television” and that representation across its shows is the “core through line to everything we do”.

When HBO Max launched on May 27, the television world was introduced to a competition series unlike any seen before on screen. Inspired by the culture of ballroom, “Legendary” follows eight houses as they vogue their way through nine balls to win a cash prize of $100,000. And while it may look like a dance competition show on the surface, under all the glitz and glam is a series that takes viewers through the history of the dance art form and its continued importance to the LGBTQ+ community.
After screening a recent episode from the series, judge Leiomy Maldonado, Mc Dashaun Wesley and executive producers Jack Mizrahi, Rob Eric and David Collins joined the Variety Streaming Room, hosted by Variety’s Caroline Framke, to discuss how they brought ballroom culture to television.

Many know of the ballroom culture via Paris Is Burning or Pose, but it still isn’t mainstream. HBO Max’s Legendary continues to help bring ballroom to the forefront and show that it’s just not about dipping, duck-walking, voguing and having a party. It is a culture that has influenced the mainstream and one that builds community. Legendary host Dashaun Wesley and judges Leiomy Maldonado, Law Roach, Megan Thee Stallion and Jameela Jamil spoke about the new reality competition in a pre-recorded panel at Atx Television Festival.
In Legendary, HBO Max brings the underground ballroom community to the mainstream by showcasing “houses” as they compete in balls to show off their skills in the five elements of voguing and fashion to win a $100,000 grand prize, but more importantly “legendary” status and bragging rights.

Just hours after Megan thee Stallion landed her first Billboard number one single for her “Savage” remix featuring Beyonce, the hot girl rapper had another reason to celebrate, getting all dressed up for the virtual premiere of the HBO Max series “Legendary,” where she serves as a judge.
Meg joined fellow judges — fashion stylist Law Roach, actor Jameela Jamil and ballroom icon Leiomy Maldonado — for the interactive party, as “Legendary” emcee Dashaun Wesley took center stage, kicking things off by introducing the series’ first episode.
“For decades the world of ballroom has been considered an Lgbtq subculture. But this subculture has inspired countless dancers, musicians, stylists, fashion designers. In the years since “RuPaul’s Drag Race” became an international sensation — which happened around the time the drag reality-competition show transferred from the previously Lgbtq-centric channel Logo to the more mainstream VH1 — countless imitations have cropped up. Netflix’s decision to reboot “Queer Eye,” while trading on a name recognition that predates “Drag Race,” no doubt was partly influenced by the latter’s massive success. HBO recently debuted “We’re Here,” a structureless amalgamation of “Drag Race” and “Queer Eye” hosted by three former “Drag Race” contestants. World of Wonder, the production company that created and produces “Drag Race,” has spawned dozens of spinoff shows to varying degrees of success.
So far, none have come close to capturing the magic and audience fervor of the original sensation, and while RuPaul’s crown isn’t getting snatched anytime soon, “Legendary” is the first queer reality show to come close.

A reality competition show with $100,000 at stake, “Legendary” is a very slick but often entertaining showcase that allows eight “houses,” made up almost completely of Lgbtq+ members, to demonstrate their skills in solo and group challenges.

HBO has dominated the Emmy race for years. Now, sibling streamer HBO Max is looking to get into the game.

Variety has confirmed that those two shows will be the first to be submitted by HBO Max for Emmy consideration. The streamer plans to create an awards campaign for both.

As production began Thursday night in Stamford, Conn., on the new HBO Max ballroom voguing competition series “Legendary,” producers confirmed the role of “The Good Place” star Jameela Jamil on the show.
“Legendary” executive producers David Collins and Rob Eric told Variety that Jamil would serve as a judge on the show, but not as Mc. An HBO Max press release earlier this week said Jamil would serve as the show’s Mc — which quickly sparked an online outcry.
Jamil was criticized for not being representative of ballroom culture, which was founded by primarily black and Latinx Lgbtq people in New York in the late 1980s, and that the gig should have gone to one of the many veterans of the scene who are still active. HBO Max has released a statement following significant backlash to its announcement that “The Good Place” star Jameela Jamil had been tapped to Mc and judge its ballroom voguing competition series “Legendary.”
“Yesterday, HBO Max was excited to announce Dashaun and Jameela’s involvement in the series ‘Legendary.’ For clarity, Dashaun is the series’ Mc/Commentator, and Jameela heads up the panel of judges alongside Leiomy, Law, and Megan,” the statement, released late Wednesday night, read.
The initial release from the forthcoming streamer clearly stated that Jamil had been chosen to carry out both important roles of Mc and judge on the show. However, the release produced a negative response, particularly from members of the Lgbtq community who accused Jamil of not being representative of ballroom culture, which was founded by primarily black and Latinx Lgbtq people in New York in the late 1980s.

However, the release produced a negative response, particularly from members of the Lgbtq community who accused Jamil of not being representative of ballroom culture, which was founded by primarily black and Latinx Lgbtq people in New York in the late 1980s.

Jameela Jamil has clarified that she won’t actually act as emcee on HBO Max’s forthcoming ballroom competition show “Legendary” after facing some backlash from the Lgbtq community.
“I am just one of the judges,” the “Good Place” star wrote on Twitter. “The brilliant @DashaunWesley is [the Mc]. With help from the fabulous @TheOnlyMikeQ. I’m a long time fan of ballroom and just wanted to help this show get made to celebrate this beautiful community.”
HBO Max announced Jamil as “Mc and host” in a press release on Tuesday, along with the rest of the judging panel, made up of Megan Thee Stallion, Law Roach and Leiomy Maldonado. In a follow-up tweet, Jamil called that release and subsequent news stories “incorrect.”
HBO Max did not return TheWrap’s request for comment.
