“I am excited to be teaming up with my old friends at Sony Pictures to bring Charlie’s adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride to life. I can’t wait to start working with Austin and my family of NYC filmmakers,” said Oscar-nominated director Aronofsky, whose credits include “The Whale,” “Requiem for a Dream” and “Black Swan.”

Warner Bros. is doubling down on the business of Timothée Chalamet. The studio signed a multi-year feature film deal with the actor to collaborate on future projects as a star and producer.
Chalamet led back-to-back box office hits for Warner Bros. with last December’s “Wonka” ($632 million globally) and this March’s “Dune: Part Two” ($575 million globally and counting). According to the studio, he became the first actor in four decades to star in the top two domestic films that were released in eight months.
Chalamet will enjoy a salary bump after those box office riches. The actor earned more than $8 million for “Wonka,” according to sources. Now, he’s looking at paydays in the double digits for leading roles in studio films.
Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, co-chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, said they are “thrilled that [Chalamet] has chosen our studio to be his creative home.

Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy, the stars of “Happiest Season,” are reunited for short film “Decades of Confusion,” which is basically a commercial for fashion brand Loewe. If only Plaza could spell it.
It ain’t your average retail ad: “Black Mirror” director Ally Pankiw directed the short that was penned by “Good Grief” and “Schitt’s Creek” star Levy.
Plaza stars as a contestant in a spelling bee that spans each decade from 1971 to the present day. Levy is the (frustrated) judge. Plaza may not be able to spell “Loewe”, but she sure can put together an outfit from the fashion house. Plaza combs the Loewe archives to transform into a new character for the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, 2000s…
“Wigs, iconic looks from the Loewe archive, and wrong answers — from 1971 to present day,” the tagline reads.
Plaza is next set to star in Ethan Coen’s dark comedy “Honey Don’t!...

The three-episode 9-1-1 Season 7 mega emergency concludes this Thursday. In the last episode, The 118 shows up for Bobby (Peter Krause) and Athena (Angela Bassett) as their ship starts sinking, and because of the distance between them, they must fly out there. Promo videos have shown the cast boarding a helicopter but no one has seen who will be flying said helicopter. New images courtesy of TV Line tease the return of a former cast member who is now a pilot. Lou Ferrigno Jr. will reprise his Season 2 character Tommy Kinnard and will be the pilot for this important trip. He appeared in a slew of "Begins" for Hen (Aisha Hinds), Chimney (Kenneth Choi), and Bobby's second Begins, all in Season 2.

Nine years ago, “The Jinx” took HBO by storm, receiving rave reviews, five Emmy nods, and winning two, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. And the show also led to the arrest of its primary subject, Robert Durst, for first-degree murder the day before the premiere of its series finale. It was fitting retribution for Durst, a man arrogant enough to sit down for interviews with a filmmaker who based his 2010 film “All Good Things” on the murders Durst got away with for decades.

Sitcoms like Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia continue to entertain viewers, with the latter being one of the popular early 2000s TV shows that have managed to sustain that momentum and build a massive fan base that's thriving today. That's because it has relatable characters, familiar but outlandish storylines, and slapstick humor that never fails to bring viewers to tears. Although many sitcoms released in the 2000s aren't as polished and cinematic as many are today, they exude certain nostalgic and comforting elements that are not so present in today’s sitcoms and television programs.

Over the last half century, there have been a ton of great actors who have worn the Batman cowl over the years. However, arguably what’s more interesting, are the actors who just missed their shot at playing the famous DC hero. One of those well-known names is Road House star Jake Gyllenhaal, who recently reflected on losing out on the Batman role for Batman Begins on The Howard Stern Show. This included talking about how director Christopher Nolan personally called him after he got the sad Bat-news.

“In the Heights” left Melissa Barrera heartbroken — but probably not for the reasons you’d assume.
Barrera starred in the 2021 musical adaptation opposite Anthony Ramos. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the “Scream” franchise alum said the press was “mean-spirited” to the ensemble film.
That’s not the only part of the “In the Heights” aftermath that bummed Barrera out. After being pumped-up so much about how her life was about “to change,” when it didn’t, it was “soul-crushing,” she said.
“My problem was with the press that came out that just felt mean-spirited toward the film,” Barrera said. “That was my first big studio movie, and everybody was telling us, ‘Your life is going to change.’ Then it doesn’t happen, so it was very heartbreaking and soul-crushing.”

Is a story about the race to create the ultimate snack that will somehow change the face of breakfast a story worth telling or even a movie? Well, according to Jerry Seinfeld, it is. And it’s enough for him to make his first feature-length directorial debut around it, too. Yep, “Unfrosted,” is a new movie about the creation of Pop-Tarts as written and directed by the comedian. It’s a movie about Kellogg’s and Post, cereal giants, facing off to create the first pastry sensation for breakfast.

What's that in the sky? It's a bird, maybe a plane — nope, it's the Tardis! A new season of the perennial British mainstay Doctor Who — Season 14, to be exact — graces our screens this summer, and there's a new Doctor at the console taking their Tardis for a spin. Ncuti Gatwa is the latest actor to step into the Time Lord's shoes after making his spectacular bi-regenerational debut alongside his direct predecessor, David Tennant, in the 60th anniversary specials. That bi-regeneration breaks from established Doctor Who canon, but Tennant's return also broke the rules. Doctor Who has been reinventing itself since 1966. Case in point: when Patrick Troughton inherited Who's leading role from William Hartnell, a move that effectively changed science fiction television forever.

Netflix has released the trailer for Jerry Seinfeld’s upcoming Pop-Tart movie, “Unfrosted,” set for release on May 3.
Per Netflix’s Tudum, the logline for “Unfrosted” reads, “Michigan, 1963. Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen, ‘Unfrosted’ stars writer-director Jerry Seinfeld.”
As Tudum acknowledges on the official “Unfrosted” page, Seinfeld has been contemplating the Pop-Tart origin story for years. For example, he made his artistic vision clear in a 2018 post on X/Twitter: “At one point I was thinking about an invention of the Pop Tart movie. Imagine the drunk on sugar-power Kellogg’s cereal culture of the mid-60’s in Battle Creek, Mi. That’s a vibe I could work with.” He also brought up the idea on “The Late Show” in 2010.

“Civil War,” the A24 action-thriller about a violently divided United States, isn’t offering up much in the way of escapism. Though it takes place in the dystopian future, it not-so-subtly feeds into the blue-state/red-state rift that’s sure to widen as the race for the White House heats up.
That strategy is prominent in the movie’s patriotic-tinged marketing materials, which include a blood-soaked trailer featuring a missile that blows up the Lincoln Memorial, a poster of soldiers sandbagging the Statue of Liberty’s flame and references to successionist forces of California and Texas.
Yet elsewhere in Hollywood, movie studios are trying desperately to steer clear of promotional efforts that seem even remotely political — lest they find themselves unwittingly embroiled in a cultural firestorm. It’s a fair concern. Long before the country started preparing for one of the most polarizing presidential elections in its history, several movies...

Physical competitions are a cornerstone of reality TV, each one urging audiences to believe that their complex games of bodily struggle are the proper way to determine the best athletes on television. There are many different types of shows with this basic concept, but a new series has emerged and quickly risen above the rest: Netflix's Physical: 100. Created by Jang Ho-gi, this South Korean series premiered in 2023 and immediately marked itself as different from similar ones for how it was truly a space where any of its competitors could win. Of course, technically, all reality programs are built fairly, but athletic competitions tend to place one kind of strength over the others, claiming that anybody strong can win without recognizing that strength can look different based on the person.

The future of breakfast is on the line in the first trailer for Jerry Seinfeld's directorial debut, Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story. Featuring a loaded ensemble that includes Seinfeld alongside Melissa McCarthy and a disgruntled Hugh Grant in a Tony the Tiger costume, the film will tell the story of the bitter feud between Kellogg's and Post that led to the birth of the frosted pastry of many flavors sold on store shelves today. Instead of telling the story like a straight biopic, however, Seinfeld and company are embracing the chaos, taking inspiration from his joke about Pop-Tarts shared in his 23 Hours to Kill special.

Dating as far back as the silent era, while thriving in the 50s and 60s, before becoming a central component of modern cinema as well with its revisionist gaze, the Western genre is one of the defining pillars of film history. With core themes relaying to justice, redemption, and honor, and the exploration of such notions through complex yet defined characters, Westerns have come to be closely associated with American culture as a way to address and explore the nation's identity. However, Europe's spaghetti Westerns make up some of the most famous and revered films the genre has seen.

For countless fans of the romantic comedy, Hugh Grant will always be just a boy standing in front of a girl. But speaking with IndieWire for his single-episode guest appearance as Ed Keplinger in HBO’s “The Regime,” the 63-year-old British actor seemed blissfully out of touch with the genre that launched his stardom.
When asked about Hollywood’s rom-com resurgence, Grant said, “I didn’t know there was one. What should I watch?”
Since the summer that brought us “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” movies about meet-cutes and star-crossed lovers have strengthened their foothold in streaming while taking leaps forward at the box office. IndieWire suggested Grant try anything with Glen Powell, a standout rom-com stud also known for “Top Gun: Maverick” who has been described as this generation’s Grant on occasion.

Takashi Yamazaki, the Japanese filmmaker behind Oscar-winning smash hit “Godzilla Minus One,” has signed with CAA for representation.
“Godzilla Minus One,” on which Yamazaki served as writer, director and VFX supervisor, earned the first-ever nomination and win for a Japanese production in the VFX category at the Academy Awards earlier this month. The film beat strong contenders such as “The Creator,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” and “Napoleon.” The Oscar win also marked the second time in 55 years that a director won the VFX award.

In Adam Wingard's "Godzilla vs. Kong," the two Titans clash viciously and almost push one another to the brink of destruction. However, the rise of a new threat, Mechagodzilla (possessed by King Ghidorah's consciousness), prompts the two to cooperate and take down their common enemy. Although Godzilla and Kong go their separate ways after this event, is this temporary truce meant to last? This question leads us directly into "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," in which Wingard has returned to orchestrate a memorable showdown between the colossal Titans amidst an unknown threat poised to destroy the world as we know it. While a classic premise for a creature feature, it is a story that fans of the MonsterVerse are eager to experience, especially with the promise of a brand new antagonist lurking in the shadows.

When Tye Sheridan was just 11 years old, something crazy happened: Terrence Malick came looking for him.
Specifically, the beloved American auteur wanted to cast a trio of young brothers for his “The Tree of Life,” co-starring Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain. The vast majority of kids Malick and his team saw were — like Texas native Sheridan — totally green to this acting thing.
Sixteen years later, Sheridan isn’t green anymore. The actor is only continuing to build out his resume, adding producing into the mix with his most recent feature film, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s “Asphalt City,” which debuted at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival under the title “Black Flies.”
Still, ask Sheridan about where his initial love of moviemaking came from, and it’s like he’s right back on Malick’s set. “I was randomly cast in the film. They recruited 10,000 kids in the state of Texas to come and audition.

"Dune: Part Two" has officially become a commercial success, passing huge box office milestones and creeping towards the $600 million mark worldwide. Director Denis Villeneuve has thus proven wrong those who said Frank Herbert's celebrated "Dune" novel was "unfilmable," especially when you consider the critical response in conjunction with those box office numbers. "Dune: Part Two" might be a bleak blockbuster, but it's so far managed a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a similarly impressive 95% audience score.

The star of The First Omen takes your questions on working as a chimney sweep, finessing his perfect sandwich – and hoping to die in a hail of bullets
There’s an argument that you’re the person James Bond matures into: women still want to sleep with you and men want to be you. What’s your secret? MarcoPoloMint
I have no idea. I don’t get out much and I don’t identify with whomever they’re talking about. I did used to quip that I could be James Bond’s grandfather and I’ve always wanted to say: “The name’s Nighy. Bill Nighy.” I’m very happy to hear, but it’s a bit of a stretch for me to grasp.
When you were younger, you travelled to Paris to write a book, but never completed it. Will you ever dust down your great unfinished novel to realise your literary ambitions?...

At their best, films aimed at young kids can be enjoyed by adults as well and truly earn the "family movie" title. 2023 brought plenty of titles that fit the bill, from box office hits like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and "Migration" to streaming treats like "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget" and "Leo."
Now it's 2024's turn to show us what it's got, and while the early months of the year tend to be pretty dry when it comes to family movies, as studios are holding them back for school vacations and long summer days, there are some fresh, funny, and heartwarming new releases on offer. From a new "Peanuts" special to a fantasy movie filled with dragon-related perils to the latest high-flying antics of "Kung Fu Panda," here are the best family movies of 2024 so far.

Since 2017, "Star Trek" has gone through some dramatic ups and downs. The launch of "Star Trek: Discovery" that year was a clarion call for the franchise, announcing that "Star Trek" was back on TV after a 13-year hiatus. "Discovery," however, was notoriously expensive and not widely beloved. It was soon joined on CBS All Access/Paramount+ by an overwhelming glut of "Star Trek" shows, each one set at a different period in Trek history. There was a brief moment when six Trek shows were running simultaneously.
The streaming model, however, proved to be unprofitable, and Paramount has been slowly extracting all its eggs from the Trek basket in recent years. "Discovery" is about to debut its fifth and final season, "Prodigy" will likewise end after its next year, "Short Treks" is seemingly no more, and "Picard" recently drew to a close. A planned spinoff of "Discovery," called "Section 31" mutated from...

A number of major names from the U.K. film and TV world and beyond have donated items — and their own time — to an auction raising money for Gaza.
Organized by Cinema for Gaza in support of Medical Aid for Palestinians, the auction has drawn in gifts from likes of Tilda Swinton, Ken Loach, Asia Kapadia, Ramy Youssef, Peter Capaldi, Imelda Staunton, Brian Cox, Joseph Quinn, Mike Leigh, Misan Harriman, Joanna Hogg, Aimee Lou Wood and Josh O’Connor.
Among the lots up for grabs when the auction goes live on April 2 is the chance to have Swinton “read you a soothing bedtime story over Zoom,” a porridge masterclass with O’Connor who will “teach you how to make the perfect bowl” (and apparently get a glimpse of his secret porridge recipe), a chat about astrology with “Sex Education” star Wood, a “restorative drink” with “Saltburn’s” Oliver, and tickets to...

Manic, magic, madcap … Julie Andrews is superb in the role of the flying nanny, in a film filled with amazing songs
Brilliant, entrancing, exhausting, and with thermonuclear showtunes from Richard and Robert Sherman, Disney’s hybrid live-action/animation classic from 1964 is now rereleased on home entertainment platforms for its 60th anniversary. And it has a brand-new certificate from the BBFC: upgraded from a U to a PG on account of “discriminatory language” from the eccentric seadog character Admiral Boom, who fires a cannon from his roof shouting “Fight the Hottentots!” (an obsolete term for South Africa’s indigenous Khoekhoe people). However the BBFC is evidently not bothered by the foxhunting scene in which the fox has a cod Irish accent, nor by the cheerful suicide reference made by one of the servants: “Nice spot there by Southwark Bridge, very popular with jumpers!”

Video adaptations are already off to the races in 2024, with Paramount+ leading the charge with two already. The first was the second season of their highly contentious Halo series, and while Season 2 is generally considered an improvement over Season 1, there are still many elements of the show that left fans desiring more. The second adaptation ended up being a complete surprise, as Paramount+ suddenly shadow-dropped the first six episodes of Ark: The Animated Series.

The lead pair make a brilliant double act, but the franchise has run out of its signature sweetness and charm
The cuddly kung fu master is back. Jack Black returns as dumpling-loving panda Po, the unlikeliest of lean, mean fightin’ machines. It’s been eight years since Kung Fu Panda 3, and on the evidence here, the delay can’t be put down to KFP4 being a labour of love, the product of animation studio DreamWorks’ A team pouring in enormous amounts of effort. It’s a hurricane of slapstick (some of it in fact very funny) and age-appropriate energetic fight scenes, but lacks the sweetness and charm of the franchise at its best. It failed the wriggle test on my seven-year-old cinema date, who was squirming in her seat around the hour mark.

In his last weeks of life, the Oscar-winning composer is filmed at the piano by his son. It is an almost wordless paean to a remarkable career
Short of presenting nothing more than music and a blank screen, this documentary about the late Japanese composer-performer Ryuichi Sakamoto’s last appearances is as stark and minimal as a concert film can get. And yet it’s a work suffused with emotional tones and shades, surprisingly not all of them sad even though the subject knew at the time of filming he had mere weeks left before he’d die of cancer.
There are moments when director Neo Sora, Sakamoto’s son, turns up the lighting for the more upbeat songs and we can see the master smile, pleased with his own performance, or the composition, or … we know not what, as there is almost no dialogue, no nattering about the life.

The Busan International Film Festival has postponed the appointment of a permanent festival director. A new leader may be appointed after this year’s edition in October.

Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival is set to celebrate the centennial of Columbia Pictures with a retrospective featuring classic titles spawned by the Hollywood studio between the dawn of sound and the late 1950s.
The Locarno retro, titled “The Lady With the Torch –– The Centenary of Columbia Pictures,” is being curated by Ehsan Khoshbakht, co-director of Italy’s Il Cinema Ritrovato festival, which is dedicated to cinematic treasures of the past and organized in partnership with Switzerland’s Cinémathèque Suisse. Where do you go when you've exhausted your horror collection? When you feel like you've seen everything, and another viewing of Saw just won't do? The answer, of course, is mondo horror favorite Faces of Death. Both the 1978 original and a slew of follow-up films under the same infamous name have captured the morbid fascination of generations — more for their shock value than outright quality. Featuring a pathologist named Francis B. Gröss (Michael Carr) as he takes the audience through his collection of deadly footage, the real draw of Faces of Death, as many an edgy suburban kid knows, is that the series is real. That's right: through decades of changing morality, the wicked rumors of Faces of Death's veracity have persisted. But just how real is real? Is it all fake blood, or have we just witnessed a murder on tape? As it turns out, the truth lies...

On July 16, 1999, Stanley Kubrick's greatly anticipated final film, Eyes Wide Shut, was released. Kubrick passed away a few months before the movie came out, and it remains one of the auteur's most provocative, controversial, and astonishing contributions to the cinematic art form. The film stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, at the time married in real life and playing a couple on-screen, as a doctor and his wife who admits she has considered having an affair. The revelation sends Cruise's Dr. Bill Harford into a tailspin through the dead of night in New York City as he wanders around looking for sexual gratification, and seeking a greater sense of control over his own life.
