An art film is typically an independent film, aimed at a niche market rather than a mass market audience.

In the early 1970s, directors shocked audiences with violent films and later on used bizarre characters and imagery in the movies. In the 1980s, films chose a more intellectual path, exploring philosophical and ethical issues.
