Uncredited Director Akira Kurosawa was replaced as co-director in the third week of shooting by Toshio Masuda and Kinji Fukasaku, who directed the remainder of the Japanese sections of the film. His contributions as an uncredited director are limited to two years of work in script development, pre-production tasks and some filming.
