Earth begins receiving strange transmissions from the crew of a manned science space station orbiting the planet Solaris. Dr. Kris Kelvin is sent to investigate what is wrong with the crew and why progress of their work has stalled. A weird movie that may seem dated to some.

    Prometheus (2012)

I might be cheating with this one since there is no signal/transmission received. But the cave paintings/star map could be considered another spin on the same idea. The same corporation from the Alien movies sends the science vessel Prometheus to discover the origins of man out in the stars after deciphering cave paintings as a star map and an invitation from their creators.

    First Spaceship on Venus (1960)

A recording originating from Venus is found and determined to be evidence of a planned invasion of Earth (this was back when people actually thought Venus had an Earth-like environment and could support life, as opposed to the dry inferno it really is). A crew is assembled to travel to the planet and hopefully negotiate with the aliens there. - contributed by user john-hitchcock
