- The Hammond family attends the funeral of its patriarch Robert. Jennifer Kingsley, Robert's assistant, is summoned to the family home for the reading of the will. Robert's legacy proves to be a Pandora's box as the family's road haulage business is divided equally between his three adult sons and Jennifer, who is revealed to be his mistress and the mother of his illegitimate daughter Barbara. Eldest son Edward refuses to share the firm to which he has devoted his life, while brothers Brian (an accountant) and David (a layabout playboy) have no interest in the company. Jennifer stuns Barbara with the revelation that she's illegitimate. After learning that they haven't been left any capital, Brian's restless wife Ann encourages him to sell his shares in the firm. David informs his girlfriend Jill of his father's death and his ambivalence toward a conventional lifestyle. Robert's widow Mary avoids dealing with her late husband's betrayal. The brothers and Jennifer convene for their first director's meeting.

- After a month abroad to recuperate from her heart attack, Mary suddenly returns on the day Barbara is celebrating her 18th birthday. Bill Riley catches an Australian named Carter surveying the land around Hammond Transport. Edward and Jennifer's growing relationship is strained by Mary's insistence that he attend her homecoming dinner instead of Barbara's birthday party. The brothers learn that Brian, distracted by marital problems, hasn't finalized plans to acquire surrounding property needed for crucial expansion of the firm, and Carter has outbid them. Mary attempts to befriend Barbara. Jennifer refuses to accept Edward's excuses, and he receives unexpected contact from a former flame.

Merroney wants to branch out, and Sir Neville has a feeling that he sees a future opportunity. The brothers learn that Martin Farrell has been transferred, leaving the question of a new chairman looming. Bill senses that Merroney would jump at a chance for the chair. Merroney wonders if Brian's new role is permanent. Ann hangs up on Brian, who turns to drink. The board debates the possibility of Merroney. Jennifer questions Merroney about his intentions toward chairmanship. Merroney requests latitude from Sir Neville. David delivers news about Jill.
- Mary anxiously anticipates the return of Brian from Italy. Jennifer begins to exhibit odd behavior while awaiting the court case to commence. Edward receives financing to buy his brothers' and Jennifer's shares, but his deliberate cruelty changes Jennifer's mind. Barbara meets with the family solicitor Mr. Cassel to learn more about the man Robert Hammond. Ann insists on seeing Brian before he gives Edward a decision, but he's more concerned with the firm's balance sheets. Mary vows to contest Robert's second will. Feeing suffocated by domesticity, Ann issues Brian a stern warning about their marriage.
- David learns that Julie has been engaged to work on the Hammond account for several months. Nicholas attempts to give Ann moral justification. Merroney, David, and Bill Riley go to Dover, where they meet hard-drinking pilot Don Stacy, but find a greater challenge with indomitable director Jane Maxwell. Jane and Merroney reach an impasse. Merroney takes his case to the board and gains David and Bill's support. Clare learns that Don Stacy and Jane Maxwell were once married. Mary wants her condition kept secret from Ted. Bill shares with Ted that Merroney thinks he can tame Jane, but she'll ultimately cook his goose.

- Ted and Bill Riley travel to the continent for their first transcontinental shipment, unaware that they have been set up by Jim Barker and are being followed. Nicholas Fox peddles his wares to Jennifer. Mary and Jennifer both want to avoid the dinner that Ted has goaded Mary into having. Ann accompanies Nicholas for an afternoon of culture and coolly resists him at every turn. On the way home, the Hammond lorry is hijacked with the lorry eventually found but not the load. The police strong arm Jim Barker, but when his background check comes clean, and a trusted employee is found to have a criminal history, the investigation turns in a new direction.

David admits feeling comfortable in the penthouse, and Jill decides to have a celebration party. Ted becomes a bear at a board meeting, with David receiving the brunt of his brother's aggression. Brian and Ann argue about the kids. Later, Jennifer attempts to draw parallels between herself and how Brian perceives Nicholas. Mary has ideas about Jennifer and Martin Farrell. David walks out on Jill's get together with old friends. Tempers flare when Mary confronts Julie about David and a heated argument ensues. Ann learns that Nicholas is leaving for Brussels, prompting a confession and a turning point in their flirtation.
- Mary arouses the brothers' intrigue by playing coy about a secret appointment. Brian and Ted decide to pursue plans with Christian Van der Merwe, and Brian notes Ted's newfound thirst for control. After Mary deems Gwen a Hammond woman, she makes her a very generous offer. Ted's discussion with Van der Merwe doesn't go as planned. Bill warns Gwen that Mary's interest in her isn't an altruistic one. Merroney learns of Ted's unprepared visit and takes it upon himself to correct the situation by showing Van der Merwe what Hammond Transport can do for him. Ted realizes his mistake, but it's too late. Merroney consults with Sir Neville about an enormous risk.
- Jill wonders if David is having an affair with Julie, who has always wanted him. David refuses to budge on the Dover depot plan and gets Ted on side. Brian goes behind David's back, issuing a direct appeal to Jill. Ted coerces Mary into inviting Jennifer round for a dinner. Jennifer notes Brian's drive for power. Barbara is curious about Johnny's mysterious business phone call. After learning that Brian went to Jill, David lays his cards on the table, forcing Ted to make an executive decision. Lorry driver Jim Barker turns up looking for a job at Hammond, but there is more to him than meets the eye
- David meets with Sir John Borret to arrange a new contract for Hammond Transport. Jennifer encourages Brian to talk openly with Ann about her activities following the Birkett party. Brian warns Jennifer that Edward won't readily accept Walker's accounting systematization. David and Jennifer find themselves needing one another's voting support against Edward. Ann refuses to ease Brian's fears that she's having an affair and realizes it comes down to his choosing between her or the firm. Barbara considers leaving home. Sir John orders his beautiful assistant Sally to cultivate David. Edward fears his brothers and Jennifer have made their first move to oust him.
- Edward orders his brothers and Jennifer to uncover any information they can on Carter, regardless of the methods used to obtain it. Barbara receives a very personal 18th birthday gift from Mary. Unable to outbid Carter, who refuses to back down and attempts to lure Bill Riley away from Hammond, the directors consider a takeover of Carter's firm. Jennifer avoids Edward, and he seeks companionship elsewhere. Nancy Lincoln piques Mary's curiosity. David has a chance encounter with a very dispassionate Jill. Brian spends an enjoyable evening with Pamela Graham, Carol's teacher. Mary's vindictive interference drives a wedge between Jennifer and Edward, but the fallout results in unexpected consequences for Hammond Transport.

A shocking personal telegram arrives for Merroney, who reads it to the board, and Ted is even more shocked at Merroney's suggestion of how to deal with the news.

Underwriter Harvey McKay arrives to begin his investigation of the C41 accident. Mary demands a meeting with Jane. Jane is left holding the baby after a shocking revelation arises about one of the flight crew. Ted reassures Jenny that the court action is over. Van Kepe suggests to April that he and Paul are more alike than she imagines. April feels like one of Paul's Picassos. Jane gives Brian subtle encouragement, while Paul imparts a subtle threat to Van Kepe. Brian convinces Jane that she's been conned.
- The firm's worst fears are realized when Ted returns with word of Parker. Later, a paranoid Ted decides to do whatever it takes to oust Carter, but the price is too steep. Brian warns Ann that they can't make the same mistake twice. Jill and Mary inform Ted that they may have found a solution to his problem with Carter.

Ted bristles at Martin's suggestion of a way to save Hammond. Later, Ted spots Martin attempting to persuade Brian to his side. David invites Bill and Gwen over to discuss the situation with Martin and Ted. Jennifer informs Martin exactly where she stands. Martin makes a motion at the board meeting, leading to a 24 hour adjournment to decide Ted's fate.
- Brian attempts to change Jane's position on the golden road to Istanbul. April learns she has been deceived. Paul dangles a golden egg in front of David to get him on side in the Tehren scheme. Jane meets with the underwriters and declares that all bets are off, distracting Paul from his promise to April. David goes too far with Jane. April realizes where Merroney's priorities are. A delegation descends on Ted and Jennifer to state its case. Jane breaks good news and bad news to Brian, who makes a last minute appeal to David. The board votes on Merroney's scheme. Jane tells Brian the answer she gave David.
