Specifically the ransom money is to be obtained by Mannering selling a fake Renoir painting to art collector Sir Richard Ellacott. On Templeton-Green's authority Mannering sells the painting and obtains the money,which is to be delivered to Sir Richard's nephew,Roddy. Mannering knows that Roddy is one of the kidnappers but must be careful not to put David's life at risk.
- The Vitale family are in possession of an emerald cameo brooch,which is said to be cursed and brings death to its wearer. Cristina Vitale arranges to sell it to Cordelia but she is killed before the transaction can be completed. Soon afterwards,her father is also slain. As the new owner of the brooch Cordelia is now in danger but is the curse genuine or a cover for something equally as sinister?
- A mail bag with important documents is stolen by the Morelli brothers. John Drake orchestrates a jailbreak for a woman named Lita, who has ties to the brothers and can lead him to their hideout. The brothers soon agree to turn over the bag for a fee. However, they plan to kill Drake as soon as the money is theirs.
- Safe-cracker James Rankin dies,wearing the space-suit he stole from as aerospace institute in Farnham. Jason finds out from his sister Leila that he was about to take part in the robbery of a safe with a magnetic combination. Posing as Rankin's replacement Jason makes contact with the gang and finds that they are planning to steal two million pounds' worth of diamonds which are being kept in a safe in the sub-zero vacuum of a frozen foods factory.

In protecting him Harry also becomes the hunted so it is a good job that Caroline gave him a shotgun as a birthday present.
- In the heart of the Home Counties business man Sir Charles Standish receives kidnap threats against his teen-aged daughter Vicky, possibly by aggrieved former business associates. Rather than involve the police and panic Vicky, Standish engages the Protectors but things must look as normal as possible and so Harry is passed off as her new tutor though he does not have the easiest of times with her.
- Anne Gordon seeks the help of the Protectors. Her son John is on trial for a crime that he did not commit though her fears are actually for her husband Arthur. He is a disturbed mental patient who has gone missing after hearing about the trial. The judge in charge of John's case is Judge Cronin and the Protectors must prevent Arthur from killing him.
- Paul is taken prisoner by a crook named Charlie, who connects him to a time bomb, which he will detonate unless Harry and Caroline steal a consignment of valuable jewels for which they are acting as couriers. A reluctant Harry makes the switch of the packet of jewels but, arriving at Paul's prison, finds Charlie dead and the bomb still ticking.

- It's Faye and Joseph's wedding day and a surprise for Joseph when he learns he is getting married in his family home. Faye finally reconciles with her parents David and Lindsey after a ten-year silence and learns from her mother that Faye's grandmother had a Low-syndrome son who died, the same disease that her son Archie suffers from. Later, a drunk Linden tells Faye that he is in love with her and they kiss and are discovered by Sophia who leaves before she is seen. Joseph becomes enraged that his ex-girlfriend Elizabeth had an affair with his dead brother which Sophia knew about. Meanwhile, back at Holby Jac takes out her misery, of not being able to get Joseph to change his mind about marrying Faye, on a group of new house officers including brother and sister Oliver and Penny Valentine.
