- David has a run-in with a pretty stranger who later turns up as his blind date; the date doesn't go well, but he asks her out again. Meanwhile, Sandy's ex Richard is in town for his aunt's funeral and taking it very casually.
- Willie and Mark sneak onto the neighbors' roof to peek at their girl's 13th birthday slumber party. Meanwhile, David needs Valerie to teach him swing dancing for a date.

- Michael has been selected to redo his driver's licence test. He fails the test and has to redo the examination. David plays a practical joke on Mark and Willie and they get back at him by convincing him that his hair is falling out.
- After Willie wrecks Mark's school project and David's CD player, they decide to reject him as a brother. Valerie attempts to lose weight to prepare for an upcoming beach vacation.
- Sandy's request for funding for a literacy program is denied so she decides to quit. She writes the letter of resignation but doesn't send it. By the next morning she has had second thoughts, but Dave has already sent the letter.

- An electrical short in an old lamp stored in the attic causes a house fire that seriously damages the Hogan home. The fire renews the family's grief over Valerie's recent death, compounded when David finds a charred picture of his mother on what used to be his nightstand. But when Mark and Willie complain over maybe being out of their home for weeks, David's devotional speech gives everyone a reason to be thankful.
- Valerie's tiresome, irritating Aunt Josephine stops by for a routine visit, and strains the boys' good behavior. But when Josephine dies while Valerie is taking her home, everyone becomes unsure of how they ought to feel.
- Willie wants Mark to tutor his new girlfriend as she will be sent to a private school if her grades don't improve. Mark is reluctant to but does so, too successfully. David becomes sick, and everybody suffers as he is a hypochondriac.
- Mark is not invited to a party with Willie so he decides that he is not cool enough and feels he must change. Sandy's car needs an oil change and, despite her misgivings, she lets Dave do it for her.

- Mark is in love with a girl at school, but how to meet her? Michael suggests that he have a party and invite her. When she said that she liked to dance, Willie says Mark is a terrific dancer, which causes him a problem as he can't dance.
- Mrs. Poole volunteers to fill in for Sandy's secretary. Mark and Willie are in trouble and Michael thinks it is caused by boy they are keeping company with. Michael and Sandy meet the boy's mother, who is initially disinterested.

- Michael starts wearing reading glasses, which makes him feel old. Sandy then decides to throw Michael a surprise 40th birthday party with the help of the boys, and he doesn't cope well with all the 'getting old' jokes at the party.
- The Hogans head to Paris for a little holiday. David goes to see the city and a girl runs him over with her car. She offers to help him and he finds himself attracted to her. But what he doesn't know is that she's a princess who decides to take a break from her royal duties.
- Michael's buddy Skip returns, offering to take him and David on a plane ride. But things turn deadly serious when the plane begins developing engine trouble and everyone is forced to bail out.

- After Willie starts to do well in school, he plagiarizes a poem to please his favorite teacher. Dave agrees to take care of Mrs. Poole's dog when she goes out of town, but he loses the troublesome hound.
- David's improving chemistry grade coincides with his romantic interest in his teacher (Lisa Aliff).
- When Michael chastises David for not coming home one night, David decides that he would be better off living with Burt and Rich. However, when they all get together David finds that the grass is not greener on the other side.
- Mark and Willie are on a school trip when they are astounded to see a nude painting of Sandy in a gallery. The picture was painted by an old college friend of Sandy's and it turns out that the artist put her head on somebody else's body.
- After spending an evening studying with a girl new to the school, David allows his classmates to spread rumors that damage her reputation.
- The family engages in a dogfight over Murray after the vet suggests the old dog be put to sleep.
- Sandy thinks the principal is her secret admirer, but is surprised to learn it's someone closer to home.
- As Michael returns to flying, six months after Valerie's death, the boys adjust to Aunt Sandy moving in to help raise them.
- It's Martin Luther King Day and one of Sandy's former teachers comes to the Hogan home for dinner. He is from South Africa and talks about apartheid, which shocks his listeners. Will wants to go to a candle light vigil against apartheid.
- Michael has an unsuccessful day fishing using the latest equipment whilst his family has all the success using primitive equipment. Dave and Burt don a camel suit in order to ride on a parade float, but they fall off and are injured.
- David, Burt and Rich head to Las Vegas for a boxing match but are distracted by the pokies. Burt hits the jackpot with his first coin and they go on a spending spree with the winnings unaware of exactly how much they're spending.
- Willie gets a date with his dream girl, on the condition that he bring a date for her cousin. After promising to bring Mark, it takes some begging for Willie to get him to agree to the double date, chauffeured by their brother David.
- Mark and Willie are desperate for a job. When Dave's new girlfriend mentions a job opening at a shoe store, they hurry to get there before she does. Sandy thinks Mrs. Poole is having an affair with a new teacher at her school.
- Michael is ridiculed when he reports seeing a UFO while flying his airliner. Sandy makes things worse when she takes him to a UFO support group. Mark and Willie make David their slave so he can get an extra concert ticket they have.
- Valerie agrees to direct Annie's play for the community theater - but upon discovering that the local weather girl cast in the lead is talentless, she has to decide if her understudy Mrs. Poole is right for the part.
- There is a new neighbour who is a bit mysterious and Dave suspects that he is a criminal. Willie employs Mark to tutor him in biology when Michael is furious about his poor results. When he succeeds the teacher accuses him of cheating.
- Dave has trouble trying to sell his mountain bike and he is forced to compromise. A neighbour breaks up with her boyfriend and she turns to Sandy for some advice. Sandy ends up having to be her friend, and she won't leave Sandy alone.
- Sandy agrees to let her ex-husband escort her to his sister's wedding, but is reminded why she divorced him. Dave sits in on his dad's poker game.
- Prodded by David's new interest in psychology, Mrs. Poole's icy relationship with her mother-in-law becomes explosive, and Mother Poole moves in with the Hogans.
- When David gets a job as a waiter, the cashier puts the moves on him to make her fiancé jealous. Michael gives Mark some boxing lessons for self-defense.
- When David doesn't come back after the date with Julia, the boys try to cover for him. Then Julia's guards finally catch up with her and she seemingly disappears from Dave's life. Julia's true identity is finally revealed.
- David is threatened by a very competitive hockey player. In their next game David seriously injures him. Willie owes Mark some money for damaging his computer but annoys him when he buys a signed baseball instead.
- David tries to conduct a psychological experiment on Mark to see the effects of sleep deprivation. Sandy stops it but David convinces Sandy to be the subject instead. The results show that she is no longer the 'queen of the all-nighter'.
- David and two of his college friends decide to steal a rival school's mascot before the game next weekend. Mark and Willie decide to put Sandy's details into a computer-dating organisation after she had a bad dating experience.
- Burt (Steve Witting) challenges David (Jason Bateman) to a duel after learning that David is dating a girl he's interested in (Jennifer Runyon)

- After Sandy lets them watch a gory zombie movie on a stormy night, the three Hogan boys each have nightmares.
- Frustrated that he's left out of activities and conversations about sports, Mark tries to change his brainy image by trying out for the school wrestling team.
- David has to forgo a camping holiday because he has to finish a paper by Monday but spends most of the time avoiding it. Michael is nervous about his first date and apprehensive about how it'll go. It goes badly and from disaster to disaster.
- The plumber says the Hogan house is jinxed, because every 20 years the woman of the house is injured. Sandy has a bad day, and Dave believes in the jinx. Willie and Brenda have a fight, which causes him to have two dates on the same night.
- Sandy's ex-husband Richard is getting remarried, and he asks Dave to be his best man. Sandy is not happy with the situation, but goes to the wedding anyway. Lloyd buys Mark and Willie a motorcycle without asking Michael first.
- Dave's 21st is coming up, so Michael gives him a pocket watch that is a Hogan family heirloom, given to the eldest male in the family. Unfortunately, Dave breaks it. A mix-up leads to Mark and Willie being sacked from Bossy Burger.
- Mrs. Poole is on edge as her mother-in-law is coming to stay for a few days and she gets on everybody's nerves. Dave is eager to buy a new car and sells his old car to Mark and Willie. Unfortunately, it is a lemon.
