- The summer of 1984: 32 years after Duane Jackson captained the high school football team and Jacy Farrow was homecoming queen, the small town of Anarene, Texas prepares for its centennial celebration. Oil prices are down, banks are failing, and Duane's $12 million in debt. His wife Karla drinks too much, his children are always in trouble, and he tom-cats around with the wives of friends. Jacy's back in town, after a mildly successful acting career, life in Italy, and the death of her son. People assume Duane and Jacy will resume their high school romance. And Sonny is "tired in his mind," causing worries for his safety. Can these friends find equilibrium in middle age?

- Peggy Martin and her father need mortgage money from the oil well leased to a shady promoter, Brill, who receives a bribe from the foreclosing landlord to suspend the working, and also, by faking the well, which he knows is barren, scoops a profit on the shares. Peggy has a madcap girl friend, Tex, who goes to "vamp" Brill in order to save the Martins. Tex is saved from Brill's clutches by Billy, a young man whom Peggy knows by correspondence only. The landlord fires the well out of revenge, and Peggy is saved from its summit by a rope from an airplane containing Billy and a friend. The land is bought by a company, and the lovers come together.
- 4 siblings on their way to a family reunion stop to visit the grave of their deceased mother. Things go awry when one of the siblings is attacked by something and goes missing as the others are leaving the cemetery. The oldest brother tells the sisters to wait in the car as he investigates. One by one they are killed off until the very end at which point Sarah (the protagonist) heads back to the site of their mothers grave, after having been attacked in the car by a zombie, in search for her siblings. She is confronted by her dead mother back from the dead as well as her other 3 now dead siblings which all corner her as she realizes her death is inevitable as she can not bring herself to kill her family even if they are a group of brain starved zombies.
