Not to be seen by the suicidal!!!
Wow--is THIS a depressing film!! It might just be the best film in a DVD entitled "The Thanhouser Collection"--seven films from early film company, Thanhouser. However, I must strongly warn you that this particular film is NOT for the faint of heart or the depressed--it will traumatize you and might possibly lead to suicide!!
The film begins with an adorable and lonely little girl making friends with the neighbor's dog. A week later, however, a car zips by and hits the kid--and speeds away! The dog witnesses the accident and runs for help. Sadly, she dies and for the rest of the film, the dog makes daily pilgrimages to her grave! It will rip out your heart when you see the dog refuse to eat, going to the florist shop everyday for a flower for the grave (how did they know that was what he wanted and how did he pay for it, I wondered!), and ultimately the child's ghost appears and the dog dutifully follows it back to the grave!!
This film was actually based on a real case in Edinburgh, Scotland. A Skye terrier named "Greyfriar's Bobby" went to his master's grave daily and kept a vigil there every day for years until its own death.
Get out the Kleenex, folks! This is an exceptionally well-done piece for 1914 and will rip out your heart!
