Director Raoul Walsh rushed to get their version of the Merimee classic before rival Cecil B. DeMille finished his. Although Walsh's premiered first and made more money, the critics favored the DeMille version with Geraldine Farrar and Wallace Reid as Don Jose. None of this furor was lost on Charlie Chaplin who released his "Burlesque on Carmen" the same year.
