The Kiss of Hate (1916) --- Lost Film ?
PamelaShort21 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
For revenge against Nadia ( Ethel Barrymore ), who exposed to the public his policy of anti-Semitism, Russian prefect of police Michael Orzoff ( H. Cooper Cliffe ) plots to kill her father Paul Turgeneff ( Niles Welch ), the governor of the province. To stop Orzoff, Nadia agrees to sleep with him, but he betrays her and assassinates Turgeneff anyway in order to become governor himself. Now it is Nadia who vows revenge, and so she joins a group of Jews that is working against Orzoff. She soon falls in love with Sergius, Orzoff's son, but instead of marrying the child of her father's murderer, she stabs him, and then tries to kill herself. Orzoff's guards stop her, and then Nadia, who knows how to save Sergius, forces Orzoff, in exchange for his son's life, to sign a statement admitting his persecution of the Jews. However, just after Nadia goes to Sergius, the group of Jews, without knowing that she is inside, set fire to Orzoff's mansion, thereby killing Nadia as well as the governor and his son.

This intense early 1916 drama was Ethel Barrymore's third silent film. The film had exclusive engagements, sometimes playing for only a day, tragically it now remains listed as unknown on the list of lost silent films.
