Douglas Fairbanks plays a Canadian Royal Mounted Policeman, under the guise of " Headin South " he rides from Canada to Mexico, along the way he earns the reputation of a notorious outlaw. After he crosses the border, he soon joins Spanish Joe's ( Frank Campeau ) gang of bandits. When Spanish Joe and his gang seize a grand hacienda, both Joe and Headin' fall in love with the ranchers daughter ( Katherine MacDonald ) who spurns them both. Joe and his drunken gang decide to attack the women of the ranch, but while they are preoccupied with a horse race, Headin' takes the women to a nearby town. When the gang raids the town, Headin', holds them off with the help of the townspeople, until help arrives. He then reveals himself as a member of the North West Mounted Police after capturing Spanish Joe, much to the bandit's surprise. Headin South along with the rancher's daughter, who's heart he also captured, now ride back to Canada to claim the reward for the notorious Spanish Joe.
