- After his mining partner Joe Pelton's (MacDonald) death, wealthy bachelor Richard Chester (Thomas Meighan) adopts Joe's five young children and takes them East by train. The children upset the calmness of the passengers of the Pullman car en route to New York City, and when they arrive at Richard's home they drive the servants almost crazy. Richard enrolls them all in school except for the youngest. His fiancee Ethel McVae (Maude Wayne), a frosty society woman, refuses to have anything to do with the children and breaks their engagement when she sees how Richard reacts when his stenographer Sally Lockwood (Leatrice Joy) helps him nurse the youngest child through a night's illness. The secretary wins Richard's love through the baby.—Pamela Short
- Richard Chester, owner of a silver mine, is engaged to Ethel McVae. Chester's private secretary, Sally Lockwood, loves him but doesn't let him know. Chester learns that his mine has come under attack by bandits, so he sets out with his lawyer, leaving an unhappy Ethel behind.
Joe Pelton, who is Chester's foreman, is a widower living with five children. When the battle with the bandits starts, Chester sees to it that all women and children are out of harm's way. Chester is wounded. Pelton drags Chester back to safety, but is mortally wounded. Soldiers arrive and capture the bandits. As he is dying, Pelton begs Chester to take care of his children. Chester agrees, and takes the children by train to his home, where he expects Ethel will love them as much as he does. Instead, Ethel refuses to marry Chester unless he sends the children away. Chester arranges for different schools to take care of the children. But the youngest is only an infant, so Sally agrees to care for it. Seeing the baby with Sally awakens feelings in Chester. Then Chester asks Sally if he can take the baby home, promising to bring it back the next day. As he puts the baby to bed, Chester discovers it has a fever. A doctor arrives and states the child has mumps.
Chester sends for Sally, who gladly takes care of the child. Ethel and her mother go to Chester's house and discover him and Sally with the child. The engagement is broken off. Chester gathers the children from the various schools and decides to settle down with them. He hires Sally and her mother to take care of them. Chester and Sally eventually marry, and have twins of their own.
