Primetime Emmy-nominated composer Christopher Young has one hell of a resume in the horror world, lending his musical talents to fan-favorite films including A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, The Fly II, Tales from the Hood, Urban Legend, Drag Me to Hell, Sinister, and more recently 2020’s The Empty Man.
The legendary composer is back here in 2024 with Christopher Young’s Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror, taking to Kickstarter to fan fund a Double CD release of his own award-winning orchestral score for the 1922 horror classic directed by F.W. Murnau.
The Kickstarter campaign previews, “In 2022, Christopher Young was engaged by Europäische FilmPhilharmonie to compose original music for the film in celebration of its 100th anniversary…the results were spectacular. Director Robert Eggers shares that Willem Dafoe's character will have a standout scene with real flames and 2000 live rats in the upcoming Nosferatu remake. The use of rats in the scene suggests that the vampire Count Orlok will once again use them to spread plagues and extend his terrifying influence, staying true to the original film. Eggers' dedication to recreating Murnau's story is apparent as he combines modern and old-fashioned filmmaking techniques in his unique take on the classic vampire tale.
Nosferatu director Robert Eggers highlights a key moment in his upcoming horror movie that centers on Willem Dafoe's vampire hunting Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, which was a complex but fun scene to bring to life. The 2024 vampire horror movie is a remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 German Expressionist horror feature Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, an unauthorized retelling of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Bill Skarsgård's transformation into Count Orlok in the Nosferatu remake is so surprising that viewers may think it was done digitally. Skarsgård went to great lengths for the role, including losing a significant amount of weight and working with an opera coach to lower his voice. The potential success of Skarsgård's portrayal could break the curse of recent unsuccessful Dracula movie adaptations.
Nosferatu remake director Robert Eggers has suggested Bill Skarsgård's transformation into the movie’s villain will make audiences second guess how it was done. Based on the iconic 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, Egger’s forthcoming remake will see Skarsgård assume the role of Count Orlok, a horrifying vampire based on Bram Stoker's Count Dracula. Currently slated for a December 2024 release, the adaptation is also set to feature an all-star cast including Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe.

How did you come to know our lord and savior, Count Orlok? If you're of a certain age, your first exposure might have come from the "SpongeBob SquarePants" episode "Graveyard Shift," in which the rascally vampire kept secretly flickering the lights during the night shift at the Krusty Krab. Or maybe you watched "Shadow of the Vampire," E. Elias Merhige's darkly comedic 2000 fictional account about the making of F.W. Murnau's 1922 German Expressionist classic "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror." Or perhaps you even saw Murnau's unauthorized "Dracula" adaptation itself or Werner Herzog's 1979 remake "Nosferatu the Vampyre" (which did away with any pretenses and just referred to Orlok as Count Dracula).
Whatever the case, Orlok has sunk his fangs deep into our collective pop-cultural consciousness these last 100-plus years. With his pallid visage, sunken eyes, and bald head, he just stands out from all those other blood-suckers, straddling the...

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu will hit US cinemas on the 25th December, but the film currently has no UK date.
Nosferatu is going head to head with Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa for the battle of the Christmas box office with a Christmas Day 2024 release date as reported by Deadline. That’s one heck of a triple bill, but one we are very excited for.
There’s no UK release date currently set for Nosferatu. Both Mufasa and Sonic 3 are in cinemas on 20th December in both US and UK so we can only hope that Nosferatu would also appear on the coveted 26th December release date as UK cinemas will be firmly closed on Christmas Day. We fear the film might get pushed to early 2025 though, but we’re trying to stay positive.

While vampire films have struggled to take a bite out of the box office lately, the patriarch of blood-sucker cinema, "Nosferatu," is coming back to show all those fanged foundlings how it's done. This new re-imagining of F.W. Murnau's officially unauthorized 1922 "Dracula" adaptation "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror" (the second of its kind after Werner Herzog's 1979 horror film "Nosferatu the Vampyre") hails from writer/director Robert Eggers -- and if the filmmaker is to be believed, this will be a truly terrifying affair to help wipe away the memories of all those lackluster movies about creatures of the night.
Eggers made a splash terrorizing audiences with his feature-length debut "The Witch" before helming "The Lighthouse" and "The Northman," both of which are frequently trippy and full of bizarre visuals and ghastly violence but aren't really trying too hard to scare you. That won't be the case with "Nosferatu,...

Each decade of cinema has pushed the industry forward with advancements in storytelling, technology, and the expansion of different genres. The 1920s saw silent films become king, with classics such as Nosferatu setting the groundwork for the horror genre for decades to come. Moving forward to the '30s, musicals shot to the pinnacle of film, with Westerns then taking over in the two decades after. The introduction of surround sound in the '70s allowed films like Jaws and Star Wars to be the groundbreaking cinema titans that they were, and then the '80s came out with iconic films that defined an entire generation.
By the 1990s, the film industry had become very similar to what we recognize today. Compared to the periods before this decade, the '90s saw a rise in technological development that allowed filmmakers to tell their stories through groundbreaking visuals as well as dialogue.

Johnny Depp once noticed a pattern with contemporary vampire films like Twilight that he wasn’t particularly fond of. So much so that he wanted to salvage his vision of the vampire sub-genre with his own film.
Johnny Depp hoped to create a real vampire movie with ‘Dark Shadows’ Johnny Depp | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Depp felt the direction vampire films were headed in contradicted what the creature features were originally supposed to be about. He wanted to pay homage to the less glamorous vampires he grew up seeing on screen. The 1960s television series Dark Shadows had exactly the type of grotesque blood-suckers that he hoped to modernize.
”I remember sprinting home from school to see it. I loved it, this soap opera with gothic vampires. Jonathan Frid, who originally played Barnabas, was such a striking presence – there’s a sliver of him in there,” Depp once told Total Film...

One performer's intense portrayal of the villain in Jack Reacher was so convincing that it affected his real life. After the movie was released, his wife received concerned calls from her friends in Paris, offering her shelter because they were frightened by his character's evilness. He reveals that he knew he did a good job with his performance because people's genuine fear and concern for his real-life persona validated his portrayal of the terrifying villain.
Jack Reacher villain Werner Herzog explained how he knew his performance was effective. Bad Bunny has teamed up with Steve Buscemi in a new music video for his song “Baticano,” based on the iconic 1922 silent horror film Nosferatu. Watch the video below.
Beginning with Buscemi working as a mad scientist in a lab, the video follows the wandering of his creation: the vampire Nosferatu, portrayed by Bad Bunny himself. Lip-syncing to the song, the Puerto Rican megastar moves through elegantly striking black-and-white sets, recreating shots from the F. W. Murnau-directed German Expressionist source material. As the video ends, Buscemi warns Nosferatu that Earth is “cruel” and “not ready” for him, as he is “too perfect for this world.”
But beyond being a fun, spooky romp, the “Baticano” video has a few strong messages illuminating some of the contradictions of society. At one point, a portrait of Jesus is shown hanging behind a man who is engaging in domestic violence. At another point,...

Vampires don't get much more well-known or iconic than Dracula, the legendary vampiric count who was first introduced in the famed horror novel by Bram Stoker, released in 1897. It didn't take too long for the character to make the jump to the silver screen, especially by the 1930s with the Universal series. Yet the silent era also had a pair of Dracula films - one from 1921 that's now considered lost, and an unofficial adaptation in the form of the legendary 1922 film Nosferatu.

The legend of Dracula is explored from a new angle with The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log,” the seventh chapter in Bram Stoker’s influential novel.
The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with director André Øvredal and producer Bradley J. Fischer, among other special features.
Here are eight things I learned from the Last Voyage of the Demeter commentary:
1. The Last Voyage of the Demeter spent 21 years in development.
Phoenix Pictures acquired the rights to the film, originally titled Demeter, over two decades before the movie made its way to the screen.
“It’s been a solid 21 years since my producing partners, Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer, and I, optioned the screenplay that we adapted into this film,” Fischer explains at the beginning of the commentary.
“And I’ve been part of it for something like three years, I think,” adds Øvredal.

"What We Do In The Shadows" is a hilarious mockumentary that combines vampire lore with comedy, launching the careers of its stars and inspiring a popular TV show. "The Lost Boys" is an iconic vampire flick from the 80s, with a star-studded cast and a campy tone that still makes it a Halloween staple. "Nosferatu" remains the best vampire movie that isn't about Dracula, with its 1922 original being a filmmaking genius that hasn't been surpassed.
Dracula is one of the most iconic vampires of all time, but these are the 10 best vampire movies that aren't about him. Due to the prevalence of Dracula in vampire media, the character and mythology have become a bit overused, with fans of the genre looking for non-Dracula films to sink their teeth into. Luckily, there are plenty of great vampire movies that have nothing to do with Count Dracula, with them ranging from comedy to drama to straight-up horror.

There’s no telling what today’s Halloween horror landscape would look like without F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. It's considered the industry's best vampire film, yet, it’s only through sheer luck that it's available to watch today, having survived court-ordered obliteration due to copyright infringement. The prosecution’s client was Florence Stoker, widow of original Dracula author Bram Stoker, whose epistolary masterwork is now a household name even among those who’ve never seen a Bela Lugosi joint. With countless adaptations throughout the ages, it’s remarkable that the first was almost taken from the masses in its entirety, even if destiny would ultimately prevail.

At 81 years of age, over 60 films and as many years into his career, Werner Herzog is a man who has seen some stuff. Here is a man who has dragged a ship over a mountain for Fitzcarraldo, climbed a volcano set to erupt, had an entire cast hypnotised on Heart Of Glass, eaten his own shoe after losing a bet, and been shot at by an air-rifle wielding sniper mid-interview – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Speaking of which, he’s also made a movie in actual Antarctica, where the sun rises and sets only once a year. But if, like us, you’d imagine all these incredible experiences must make for some even wilder dreams, then you’d be very wrong. Werner Herzog hardly even dreams at all.

Gothic horror movies intermix romance, horror, and fiction to create ethereal and scary narratives with common plot points like female protagonists, dangerous estates, and themes of sexual repression. "The Woman in Black" is a ghost story with a vengeful spirit killing children, while "Nosferatu" and "The Black Cat" revolutionized the vampire genre with their gothic horror elements. "The Devil's Backbone" expanded the parameters of gothic horror movies by balancing fantasy elements with historical fiction, while "Frankenstein" remains the definitive film adaptation, influencing subsequent gothic horror films.
Gothic horror movies have dominated cinema for a long time. Pioneered by Horace Walpole back in 1764 with his classic novel A Gothic Story, many other iconic names like Mary Shelley and Edgar Allen Poe have invested their creativity into creating gothic masterpieces. Public domain horror movies provide a wealth of chilling classics that can be viewed free of charge and remade for a new audience. Notable public domain horror films include "The Terror" (1963), "Dementia 13" (1963), and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1920). From cult classics like "Spider Baby" (1967) to iconic films like "Night of the Living Dead" (1968), public domain horror movies offer a diverse range of terrifying experiences.
Public domain refers to works that have reached a point beyond their copyright, making them open to the public and there are a number of public domain horror movies now available. The best guideline is that anything published before 1923 is in the public domain. In 2024, the date moves up to 1928. However, while this is a way to see what old properties are now available to anyone to remake or retool, there are also newer movies that have slipped into the public domain for other reasons.

Beyond well-known vampire stories such as Dracula and Twilight, there's a rich horror subgenre revolving around these creatures of the night. For one thing, there are many versions of the same monster, ranging from the seductive philanderer to the bloodthirsty fiends difficult to look at. Ever since the first horror movies, when cinema was starting to take shape as a valuable artistic expression, films such as Nosferatu and Vampyr helped consolidate the figure of the modern vampire.
Taking great vampire movies from the 21st century into account, many things have changed. While crucial elements from the vampire lore continue to pop up occasionally: aversion to sunlight, sharp fangs, the stake to the heart, and bites that pass the curse along, horror movies continue to innovate the timeless night creature.

Vampire characters in pop culture have evolved beyond the brooding stereotype of Dracula, with some embracing their humanity and others defying expectations. Memorable vampires like Viago, Rosalie Hale, and Abby have captivated audiences by subverting traditional vampire tropes and offering unique storylines and characteristics. From comedic vampires in "What We Do In The Shadows" to morally complex characters like Raphael Santiago in "Shadowhunters," vampire portrayals continue to diversify and captivate audiences across various mediums.
When most people think of vampires, Dracula is likely the first one that comes to mind, but there are a lot of other vampire characters in pop culture. The tale of the Transylvanian count wasn't an immediate commercial success but became popular after the turn of the century. Guillermo del Toro is set to direct a new adaptation of Frankenstein, a project he has wanted to do for 50 years. The film will star Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth. Del Toro's unique approach to sympathetic monsters makes him the perfect choice to bring the complexities of Frankenstein's creature to life.
Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Frankenstein adaptation receives an update from the director just seven months after an initial casting report. The classic story of Mary Shelley's influential 1918 novel has been adapted many times, leading to the creature becoming an enduring and often-revisited figure in pop culture from Hollywood's earliest years. The celebrated director acclaimed for Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, The Shape of Water, and Pinnochio's adaptation will be produced by Netflix, reuniting with the company after his successful and distinct retelling of the puppet who wished to be a real boy.

Horror's vampire subgenre has been a perennial favorite with audiences, especially in cinema, with these types of horror stories being told for over a century now since 1922's Nosferatu. Horror is incredibly versatile, which means that vampire stories can be told in many different ways, ranging from broad comedies, sweeping emotional epics, and vicious gore-fests.
Certain horror monsters just don't connect in movies, but the medium has embraced vampires in films like Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Lost Boys, Fright Night, Twilight, and even comic book adaptations like Morbius. As modern horror continues to evolve in exciting ways, there have been some standout vampire movies from the past decade that deserve some attention.

Few horror movie icons seem quite as immortal as Dracula, both literally and figuratively. The world's most famous vampire has had a haunting presence in cinema for over a century at this point, so long as you include 1922's Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, which was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, first published in 1897. As far as movies, where the filmmakers were allowed to use the entire novel, are concerned, the original would be in 1931, which is when the first official Dracula movie came out.

The cast of Juror No. 2 is coming together with a big name coming on board. Sutherland joins previously announced cast members Nicholas Hoult (Renfield), Toni Collette (Hereditary), and Zoey Deutch (The Politician). Word is the script, penned by Jonathan Abrams, has been collecting dust for the past 15 years before Eastwood caught wind of it last year and chose that to be the last movie he'd direct.

The film "follows family man Justin Kemp (Hoult) who, while serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma … one he could use to sway the jury verdict and potentially convict — or free — the wrong killer." Although first inclinations might caution one to expect some wildly over-the-top performances in something like Renfield, especially given some of the talented names involved, the film manages to deliver a uniquely entertaining comedic/horror experience that never strays too far from the essence of both genres.

It seemed great on paper. Nicolas Cage as Dracula? It’s a role he was born to play; it’s a wonder it hasn’t happened before now (sorry, Vampire’s Kiss doesn’t count).
Renfield, Dracula’s long-suffering servant — or in vampire parlance, “familiar” — plagued by co-dependency issues and seeking help in a support group? Sounds hilarious. An original story by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead? I’m there.
So why does Renfield downplay those promising aspects and turn out to be such a bloody mess?
The film, stemming from Universal’s understandable continuing attempts to capitalize on its classic monsters IP, certainly starts out promisingly. Renfield, played by Nicholas Hoult, provides background information about his relationship with the vampire in his life, illustrating his narration with nothing less than scenes from the 1931 classic Tod Browning film Dracula. Cage and Hoult are digitally inserted into the footage, replacing...

With the exception of the Count himself, Renfield is the most dynamic character in the Dracula story. Originally conceived as a madman in Dr. Seward’s sanitarium with a mysterious connection to his vampire overlord, Renfield has evolved with the ever-extending mythos that has arisen around Stoker’s original creation.
Since the earliest Dracula films, the character has changed and deepened, become more and less integral to the story depending on the focus of the filmmakers, but has always been an opportunity for great character actors to let loose and give some of the most memorable performances in horror cinema.
This week, Renfield will finally get his moment at center stage, with Nicholas Hoult becoming the latest actor to bite into the role. In anticipation of his starring turn, here is a look at some of the very best depictions of everyone’s favorite fly-eating maniac.

As the upcoming "Ahsoka" live-action series hovers on the horizon, the recent Star Wars Celebration announcement of Lars Mikkelsen taking up the blue make-up to reprise his legendary animated voice role in the full-bodied flesh sent waves of excitement through Star Wars fans. A main baddie for the final half of the "Star Wars Rebels" animated series created by Dave Filoni (showrunning again for "Ahsoka"), the ice-blue Chiss Admiral proved to be a formidable and terrifying threat to the Ghost crew. Mitth'raw'nuruodo's (Thrawn's Chiss name) epic (re)entrance into the public consciousness provided fond memories for Celebration attendees back in 2016, especially for the generation who grew up with the Legends novels that started with Timothy Zahn's 1991 "Heir to the Empire." That book kicked off an enduring Legends reign for Thrawn as an intelligent Imperial tactician who had no nonsense for Imperial stupidity.

One of the highlights of this year’s Overlook Film Festival was attending the premiere of Renfield, with Nicolas Cage and director Chris McKay in attendance. Having seen the film, I can confidently say that horror fans are going to have a lot of fun with this one. This film has a great energy to it, with an equal mix of horror, comedy, and action that reminded me a lot of the tone of Ash vs. Evil Dead.
Not only did I have a chance to catch up with both Nicolas Cage and Chris McKay on the red carpet prior to the screening, but they took part in a post-screening Q&a. Highlights from both events are below and I’ve kept this spoiler free, only loosely referencing elements that have been shown in the trailer.
