Country star Eric Church has responded to criticism he received for putting on an unconventional, polarizing headlining set at the Stagecoach Music Festival.
Taking the festival’s main stage for its closing slot on Friday night, Church transformed Stagecoach into a literal church of sorts, projecting dramatic stained-glass art behind him and enlisting a gospel choir to fill-out the sound. Though his performance began later than scheduled, it opened with quite a statement: a five-minute organ intro followed by a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (but don’t tell St. Vincent that).

From there, Church’s setlist featured more covers — some traditional and some quite unexpected. He played “This Little Light of Mine,” and other standards, but also reimagined songs like Tupac Shakur’s “California Love” and Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice.” Notably missing, though, were many of Church’s own songs — he...

Is there any current director who is more controversial than Zack Snyder? It’s wild how divisive a figure he is, with his fans nearly cult-like in their devotion, while his detractors are just as fervent. Here at JoBlo, we’ve always been ardent supporters, even if we haven’t unquestioningly praised all of his films. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to do an all-around ranking of his films (although we’ve left the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole off the list). So, without further ado, here’s our ranking from worst to best.
Sucker Punch:
I’ll admit to not knowing precisely what Snyder was trying to pull off when I saw this movie in 2011. It remains the most obscure of his live-action films. It is a tough nut to crack, being that it’s a fantastical, hyper-surrealistic fantasy centred around a woman...

Stagecoach is known for its surprises and, on Friday night, Eric Church delivered one of the most unexpected sets in the California country music festival’s history. The question facing fans is, was it a good surprise or a bad one?
Church hadn’t headlined Stagecoach since 2016 and is currently in the midst of a 19-show residency at his Nashville bar Chief’s that finds him getting up-close and candid with fans and testing out new songs. When he appeared on the Mane Stage at 9:45 p.m. to the...

St. Vincent’s seventh studio album, All Born Screaming, has arrived.
Described by St. Vincent’s Annie Clark as a “post-plague pop” album about “heaven and hell — the metaphorical kinds,” All Born Screaming was first announced this past February, and was preceded by its singles, “Broken Man,” “Flea,” and “Big Time Nothing.”
Get St. Vincent Tickets Here
The album’s full tracklist spans 10 songs, and includes contributions from exciting collaborators like Dave Grohl, Josh Freese, Cate Le Bon (who features on the title track), and more.
One poignant moment is the song “Sweetest Fruit,” which was partially inspired by the legacy and death of Sophie, who Clark “never met,” but was “an admirer from afar,” according to a recent interview. Stream All Born Screaming in its entirety below.
Meanwhile, Clark is gearing up for her 2024 tour, which kicks off in May and will bring her to cities like San Francisco,...

St. Vincent has shared “Big Time Nothing,” the third single to arrive ahead of her forthcoming album, All Born Screaming. Watch the lyric video below.
“Big Time Nothing” follows the previously released tracks “Flea” and “Broken Man” in anticipation of the LP, set for release later this week on April 26th. While the other two singles share the psychedelic touches of “Big Time Nothing,” this latest offering leans even further into explosive instrumentals and pulls back the focus on lyrics. St. Vincent holds the sole producer credit on all three tracks, and All Born Screaming is poised to be her first entirely self-produced album.

St. Vincent is also gearing up for a 2024 tour, which kicks off in May in Ventura, California before hitting cities like Boston, Philadelphia, Ann Arbor, and more. The spring and summer trek will feature Momma, Yves Tumor, Spoon, Dorian Electra, and Eartheater rotating in support.

Hoda Kotb shared a message for a grieving friend this week and Today fans thought it was very sweet. She had a few personal things on her mind in March, which makes it seem like a very kind act.
Hoda Kotb Fans Like Her Caring Heart
In the first week of March, some worrying news arrived about Hope, the host’s four-year-old child who had a medical problem in February. Hope ended up in the ICU, but her mom’s not the kind of person to splash her children’s intimate problems out on social media. So, fans respect her for that. She seems like a caring and loving mom to her kids, who were adopted by Hoda and her ex, Joel Schiffman.

Mainstream music can be painfully predictable, but sometimes the unexpected is even worse. Troye Sivan covered George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” for the television series The Idol. Words cannot express how wrong a choice this was. While the original “My Sweet Lord” has a reputation for being a classic, John Lennon seemed to dismiss it.
George Harrison’s ‘My Sweet Lord’ didn’t need a synthesizer revamp from Troye Sivan
As a musician, George was many things. Spiritual. Folky. Philosophical. “My Sweet Lord”‘s gentle guitar rhythm and lyrics about God perfectly encapsulate his work.
Sivan is none of those things. While he tried for some Lorde-esque youthful wisdom on his first album, the rest of his music is squarely aimed at the club. And that’s fine. But having him cover “My Sweet Lord” is like asking one of those risque DeviantArtists to remake the Mona Lisa. Whatever the result,...

Actors reacted with unbridled joy — and some healthy skepticism — to the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike after the union reached a tentative deal Wednesday with the AMPTP on the 118th day of work stoppage.
The strike officially ends at 12:01 that evening but goes to the union’s national board on Friday.
“Lost” and “The Good Doctor” actor-producer Daniel Dae Kim tweeted, “Woo hooo!!!! Let’s hope the deal is fair and we can get back to work!”
SAG-AFTRA Negotiating Committee member Frances Fisher, who told TheWrap that the only times she wasn’t on the picket lines was when she was meeting with the studios, tweeted a photo of herself holding out her arms in triumph in front of the SAG building on Wilshire Blvd.

Amazon Prime’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel Daisy Jones & the Six traces the rise and fall of a fictional Seventies rock band through a doc-style miniseries. The 10-episode miniseries brings to life the magic behind the two halves of the title, along with highs, bitter arguments, and behind-the-scenes tension, while centering around lead singers Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne (played by Riley Keough and Sam Claflin). England produced some of the best classic rock artists of all time. Queen Elizabeth knighted several musicians before she died, and many more received the country’s highest honor. But King Charles’ favorite musician didn’t come from England.
King Charles once said Leonard Cohen was his favorite musician: ‘It’s terrific stuff’
Charles watched The Beatles take over the world, The Rolling Stones cement themselves as one of the finest rock bands anywhere, and Led Zeppelin rewrote the heavy rock playbook.
Yet none of those English bands compared to Leonard Cohen.
During a 2006 interview celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Prince’s Trust, the future king admitted he found it hard to keep up with the onslaught of new bands. He then named Canadian singer-songwriter Cohen as his favorite musician.

Stevie Nicks has thanked Taylor Swift for penning the Midnights song “You’re on Your Own, Kid,” which the Fleetwood Mac singer says helped her grieve the loss of her bandmate and friend Christine McVie.
“Thank you to Taylor Swift for doing a favor for me, and that is, writing a song called ‘You’re on Your Own, Kid,'” Nicks said on Monday, May 22nd during the Atlanta stop of her headlining tour (grab tickets here). “That is the sadness of how I feel.”
Nicks went on to share how close she was with McVie, even when they were separated for long periods of time: “Even on the other side of the world, [Christine and I] didn’t have to talk on the phone, we really weren’t phone buddies. Then we would go back to Fleetwood Mac, and we would walk in and it would be like, ‘Little sister, how are you?...

“It’s just a show,” is the common response from someone seeing a person crying at the death of a fictional person on screen. But TV acolytes will know that it can be hard to rein in the emotions when your favourite character for the past seven years has just been killed off.
In the battle of TV versus cinema, the former has always packed more of a punch when it comes to impactful deaths – probably because we’ve come to know the character better over a longer period of time. And when someone who you’ve grown used to seeing day-in and day-out suddenly vanishes from your life forever, there are going to be some emotional ramifications.
Sometimes, in the saddest of circumstances, the demise of a character even marks the demise of the show itself, with creators and writers failing to keep us interested beyond their death blow.

Season 21 of “American Idol” continued Monday night with judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie narrowing down the contestants to the Top 24. Well, that was the plan at least. There was just too much talent, so they expanded the field to 26, but who earned that final slot? Only 25 were shown in the episode.
Rumors are swirling online that Paige Anne, the 16-year old David Archuleta stan who lost her sing-off to Megan Danielle, was invited to return. The cause of Fleetwood Mac star Christine McVie’s death has been disclosed.
McVie died on 30 November 2022. The news was revealed by her family in a statement, saying the 79-year-old died “passed away peacefully at hospital following a short illness”.
The singer-songwriter’s death certificate has now revealed that she died of a ischaemic stroke.
This occurs when the brain’s blood supply is either interrupted or reduced.
The document says that McVie had previously been diagnosed with “metastatic malignancy of unknown primary origin”.
This means that cancer had spread in her body, but the tumour had been undetected. Cancer is listed as a secondary cause of death on the certificate.
McVie, who was born Christine Perfect, joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 after marrying bassist John McVie, and left after 28 years in 1998. She returned in 2014.

“It was a bit rough going in and out of foster care,” revealed Cam Amen before his “American Idol” audition on Sunday night. “I just remember being taken out of my classroom by police officers. I’m holding my brother. We didn’t know was going on. We were crying waiting for Mom. She never came. We were in foster care a long time. I did leave at 18 and took in my brother and sister. There are tons of songs with George Harrison‘s best slide guitar work. The former Beatle adopted the style in the late 1960s after he realized he needed to freshen up his sound after playing the sitar for so long. He’d lost touch with his guitar. Thankfully, he started playing slide. Here are 10 of his best slide songs.
George Harrison | Bettmann/Getty Images 10. ‘My Sweet Lord’
George’s triple album All Things Must Pass has some of his best slide guitar work, especially on “My Sweet Lord.” The song would be nothing without the slide that plays a beautiful melody. It blends into the chorus of “Hallelujah” and “Hare Krishna” perfectly. By 1970 George hadn’t been playing slide for very long, but he embraced it wholeheartedly on this tune.
9. ‘Wah-Wah’
“Wah- Wah” is a jumble of sounds, but you can make out George’s perfect slide work throughout the song.

Last year, 144 documentary features were eligible for an Academy Award, but in reality, less than a third of those docs had a chance of making the 15-film shortlist. That, in part, is because garnering a spot on that competitive list requires not only a beautifully crafted film constructed by a talented director and crew, but also money.
In the past decade, platforms with deep pockets — Amazon, Apple TV+, Disney +, Netflix — began to spend on documentary award campaigns in ways that, prior to 2010, were unfathomable to the nonfiction film community. Before streamers came onto the scene, lobbying and marketing a doc during award season meant, if you were lucky, that a distributor took out a few “For Your Consideration” ads and hosted a handful of screenings. Now, depending on who the distributor is, FYC ads are plentiful, and small screenings have been transformed into events at New York’s Crosby and Whitby hotels,...

Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor has opened up about a shocking sex scene in her forthcoming movie, Fair Play.
The actor, best known for playing Daphne in the hit Netflix period drama, appears opposite Solo’s Alden Ehrenreich.
In the sexually charged thriller, Dynevor and Ehrenreich play a newly engaged couple who work together at a “cut-throat hedge fund”.
Speaking to Variety, Dynevor addressed one scene in particular, in which the two characters sneak into a bathroom to have sex while attending a wedding.
While the exact details of the scene are not divulged, it’s stated that the moment depicts a sex act that leaves Dynevor’s character’s dress covered in blood.
“I loved it,” Dynevor said, discussing the scene. “[When I read the script] I was like, ‘Hallelujah.’ I’d never seen a scene like that on film before. It happens. I don’t want to spoil too much, but it was fun to bring to life.

It’s opening night of Daniel Seavey’s first solo tour and he’s leaning back on a couch at the House of Blues in San Diego, fine-tuning his guitar. He has to go onstage in just a few minutes, yet he’s showing no signs of pre-show jitters. Instead, he’s totally relaxed and laid-back. “I’m nervous about the fact that I’m not nervous,” he says with a laugh, putting his guitar down. “I should be thinking harder about what I’m going to say and do.

“Me Time,” a slapdash comedy by writer-director John Hamburg, stars Kevin Hart as Sonny Fisher, a stay-at-home parent suffering from what Betty Friedan labeled “the problem with no name.” Sonny feels lonely and out-of-step around adults with concerns more grown-up than his fixation on minivan technology, elementary school talent shows and a proposal to include plant-based milks in the cafeteria. His wife Maya (Regina Hall), a high-powered architect, proposes that he press pause on his domestic responsibilities to reconnect with his own inner needs. She’ll take their two kids Dash and Ava (Che Tafari and Amentii Sledge) over spring break if he’ll agree to attend the 44th birthday blowout extravaganza of his childhood best friend Huck (Mark Wahlberg), a footloose, Peter Pan-esque party boy whose company isn’t much more mature.

While most showrunners are content to use Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” for soundtrack shorthand, Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg prefer slightly deeper cuts from the Canadian singer-spiritualist.
The duo potently utilized “Who By Fire,” with its ties to the Hebrew “Unetaneh Tokef” prayer, at the climax of the fourth season of The Americans. They return to Cohen again with a song that I won’t spoil featured pivotally in their new FX limited series The Patient, which will air exclusively on Hulu.
It’s easy to see why Fields and Weisberg respond to Cohen (or why their music supervisor thinks their shows and Cohen’s songs are a good match). The film Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song proffers the supposition that the multifaceted and layered career of the poet/singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen can be extrapolated by studying his enduring and internationally renowned composition “Hallelujah.” While there may be far more to explore about this remarkable man’s life than can be contained in one documentary, this piece by Daniel Geller and Dayna Goldfine does an extraordinary job in doing just that.
As a whole, the film chronicles Cohen’s song, “Hallelujah,” long (and dramatic) journey from rejection to international acclaim. The film also explores the many artists for which the song served as a sort of gauge for their own creative output or spirituality.
Artists like John Cale, Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, Brandi Carlile, Eric Church, Judy Collins, Glen Hansard, Myles Kennedy, Sharon Robinson, and Regina Spektor are all allotted ample time to extol the virtues and nuances of Cohen’s composition,...

The new documentary Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song is a double biography of sorts, of beloved Canadian-Jewish songwriter/singer Leonard Cohen, who has had a cult-like following, particularly among musicians, and his most famous song “Hallelujah,” a song that seems to be everywhere and has taken on a life of its own, transforming from a more sacred form about King David to more secular form that appears in countless movie soundtracks and has become a favorite at weddings, funerals and singing contest. This excellent documentary, from co-directors Daniel Geller and Dayna Goldfine, has plenty for both long-time fans and those new to the musician’s work.
Unlike some previous documentaries about Leonard Cohen, who passed away in 2016, this one focuses more on his career and its evolution than on his personal or romantic life.

This excellent documentary, from co-directors Daniel Geller and Dayna Goldfine, has plenty for both long-time fans and those new to the musician’s work.

Not many songs have been covered by so many artists like Leonard Cohen’s song “Hallelujah.” First recorded in 1984 on the underwhelmingly received Various Positions album, “Hallelujah” received little success upon its release but eventually found fame when Jeff Buckley and John Cale covered the song. However, many people know the song from the Dreamworks’ movie, “Shrek,” covered by Rufus Wainwright.

"Unlocking the mysteries of life was his primary preoccupation." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed the official trailer for the documentary film titled Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song, which premiered at both the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals last year. Yes, they made an entire doc about one song! But it's about so much more than that. Hallelujah examines the legendary poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen through the lens of the hymn "Hallelujah," arguably his most famous and certainly most covered work. Rufus Wainwright, Brandi Carlile, Judy Collins, Regina Spektor, Amanda Palmer, and Eric Church, among others, appear in the documentary and have all recorded and performed their own versions of the emotional song. Other interviewees include his long-time artistic collaborator Sharon Robinson; John Lissauer, arranger of the original version of "Hallelujah"; record industry legend Clive Davis; and Larry "Ratso" Sloman, an ex-Rolling Stone reporter, who shares never-before-heard, unedited...

In the canon of great songwriters, few names loom as large as Leonard Cohen. The Canadian singer-songwriter pursued a career as a poet before pivoting to music later in life, and that sensibility comes through in his haunting, spiritual lyrics. While songs like “Hallelujah” and “Bird on a Wire” have permeated pop culture, largely as a result of other people covering them, Cohen’s own discography of albums provides a treasure trove of smart, poetic gems for music fans willing to look closely enough.
From folk-tinged classics like “Songs of Love and Hate” to his late-career, mortality-centric masterpieces like “Old Ideas” and “You Want It Darker,” Cohen’s unique voice never failed to captivate his legions of devoted fans. But while his literary prowess is rivaled by few, his enigmatic personality and relative lack of mainstream popularity make him something of a mystery to many music lovers.
