Sex & Nudity

  • Some soldiers swim naked in a river. We very briefly see their bare buttocks as they do somersaults to impress some village girls.

Violence & Gore

  • The battle scenes are intense, even by today's standards.
  • A brief glimpse of soldiers being blown up in a hole
  • Two characters lose legs. One of them dies later on.
  • There is a short but disturbing glimpse of a soldier grabbing onto a wire. He is then blown up, and all that is left is his hands still grabbing on the wire. Blood is shown.
  • A pretty iconic scene where the French soldiers are coming to German trenches and a German soldier shoots the French with a machine gun. We pan across the French being shot down and all of them dying. The same thing happens when the Germans go to the French trenches.

  • Many fight scenes and also times when soldiers just go crazy because they don't like the sound of bombs.

Violence & Gore

  • It's nighttime, soldiers are fighting. A bomb explodes near a soldier's face; he then becomes blind. You can see blood on his eyes, he then screams in agony and pain which makes the scene emotional. Not knowing what is around him, he then runs right into the path of an enemy machine gun and is killed.
  • A famous scene where Paul Baumer is in a deep hole during a battle, a French soldier jumps into the hole and Paul stabs him. Feeling sorry, Paul tries to save his life but fails. He is in sorrow and pleads for forgiveness.
  • The famous ending to the film where Paul is in the trenches; he then spots a butterfly. He reaches out to grab it, but a French sniper sees him. Just as he is about to grab the butterfly, a shot rings out. Paul's hand falls, and it just lays motionless, indicating that he is dead.
