- Set in the Tornio river valley in the late 19th century, Paloniemi's lord Heikki tries to overcome his financial difficulties by marrying his son Juhani and Hanna, the only daughter of Nuottaniemi. Hanna, in love with the honest Koskenalusta Antti, is threatened by the fiery and dangerous Korpikoski.
- The Tornio river valley in the late 19th century. Iisakki Nuottaniemi and Heikki Paloniemi steer the rafts through the dangerous Korpikoski as coxswains. In the eyes of bystanders, Heikki acts recklessly and delays the rowing so that the raft crashes into rocks and many men fall into the water. Among them is Niilo, the only son of the wealthy Nuottaniemi family, who is brought ashore, but Iisakki's attempts to revive him are no longer enough to save his life.
Paloniemi's Heikki is in financial difficulties, which he hopes to overcome by marrying his son Juhani and Hanna, Nuottaniemi's only daughter. In mid-winter, Heikki sends Juhani to bring word to Nuottaniemi of the arrival of the preacher Kero-Pieti. Over coffee, Hanna tells him that her father is still thinking about Niilo's drowning and suspects that it was due to Heikki's negligence. In the context of the meetings, Kero-Pieti tries to reconcile the deadlock between Heikki and Iisakki: he urges Heikki to apologize and persuades Iisakki to forget his grudge; he asks both to examine themselves and seek reconciliation through young love. Iisakki is adamant and says that Heikki must take the initiative; Heikki, on the other hand, swears his conscience is clear and says he puts his trust in his children's love.
In spring-winter, Hanna appeals to her father on behalf of the Paloniemi, who still expects Heikki to speak first and give an explanation. Kero-Pieti, lying gravely ill in Tornio, invites Iisakki to join him: Heikki is also present, still asserting his clear conscience about the accident, and it is on the bed of sickness that Iisakki finally comes to terms. On the way back, Heikki raises the issue of the young people's union, to which Iisakki replies that Hanna should decide for herself and not go against her daughter's wishes. Meanwhile, Juhani has already confessed his love for Hanna and demands an immediate answer to his proposal. Hanna asks the other for patience, but in fact, her heart beats for Antti of Koskenalusta, who has gone to the Perä-Pohjola work site for the winter and from whom Kulku-Matti brings a letter with greetings.
In the spring, the logs arrive. Antti is on the first ferry and Hanna gives him a particularly warm welcome; between them, the young people confess their mutual feelings and pledge their loyalty. Heikki and Juhani understand the direction of the wind, and Heikki proposes Antti as the new helmsman of the ferry, when Iisakki, citing his failing eyesight, wants to give up the job.
Heikki sets off down the rapids when the water is dangerously high. The raft breaks up at the rapids, many men drown, but Antti manages to rescue Juhani in the middle of the rapids on Varsankallio. Another raft, led by Iisakki, comes to the rescue, but Antti and Juhani cannot reach the rope that saved them. The next attempt is made by Heikki, who steers the new raft towards the rock, causing the raft to break up again and all the men to drown. Hanna leads the third attempt, which finally succeeds: Antti and Juhani catch the rope and are rescued on the raft.
Kero-Pieti holds village meetings in Nuottaniemi to remind people of the fate of the drowned. Juhani appears on the scene, talking incoherently, his eyes burning with madness. He rushes out through the window, runs to the edge of the river, and falls from the thundering rapids into the water in front of the crowd. Kero-Pieti blames himself, wondering if it was all his fault. Antti and Hanna, on the other hand, are already looking to the future: Antti says he has spoken to Iisakki and received confirmation of his proposal. Leaning on each other, Antti and Hanna watch the log trucks leave for the city.
