early Columbo? Plus Crabbe as a gangster!

This film reminded me of Columbo, only a lot better. It was a blast to see Buster Crabbe playing a gnarly gangster. He was darn good at it too. I really enjoyed this murder mystery/gangster flick a lot. It was pure 1930s gumshoe fun. The cast was excellent, especially Crabbe, Marsha Hunt and the fellow playing Hank Hyer, the private detective. Things move along at a quick pace and there is plenty going on to keep you interested. Detective Hyer is very good...he can be tough, smooth with the ladies, a bit of a scam artist, and a good pal all at the same time. I watched this on a bad digital transfer but still had fun. It would be awesome to see it again with a more watchable version. I recommend it to fans of vintage tough guy/mystery movies. The story is pretty good but the acting and direction are excellent. Sweet cast for sure! The dialog was wonderful.
