A tale of seven brothers
Petey-1021 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This movie tells the story of seven simple brothers, born in Jukola. The life they live is not very peaceful one.Often they get in a fight with Toukola's boys from the neighbor village. They have never gone to school. But eventually even they must know how to read, so they can accept church confirmation. And maybe Juhani, the oldest of the brothers would get to marry the beautiful Männistö's Venla.Seitsemän veljestä (Seven Brothers) has the reputation of being one of the most known Finnish novels. It was one of the first novels written here (published in 1870).The writer of the story was Aleksis Kivi, who would celebrate his 175th birthday next October. This movie, made 70 years ago in 1939, portrays the events of the book very good. It's most tragicomic to watch these grown-up brothers trying to learn how to read. Not very easy for them.At one point they are in the woods and have to escape forty herd of bulls on a rock.So they shoot all the bulls.Or Simeoni seeing the hairy Lucifer when he has been drinking in the woods. Also they build a new place for them in Impivaara and they manage to burn it on Christmas. They run out with their horse called Valko and the rooster and go back to Jukola in their bare feet. There you have a few great moments from this terrific movie. The actors are all amazing.Edvin Laine plays Juhani.Eino Kaipainen is Tuomas.Kaarlo Kytö is Aapo.Kaarlo Kartio is Simeoni.Joel Rinne is Timo.
