In New York, the playboy Peter 'Pete' Van Allen (
George Brent) marries the famous concert pianist Sandra Kovak (
Mary Astor) after a party. A couple days later, his lawyer Jock Thompson (
Jerome Cowan) tells him that their marriage is not valid, as Sandra's divorce from her previous husband is not concluded. Pete is a distinguished pilot, and he flies to Maryland to meet his former fiancée Maggie Patterson (
Bette Davis) at her farm. Maggie tells him her uncle, Senator Ted Greenfield (
Charles Trowbridge) has offered him a position of pilot to work for the government. Pete returns to New York and, being a gentleman, offers to re-marry Sandra next week to make good on their former drunken exploit. However, prima donna Sandra says she has a concert in Philadelphia and refuses to reschedule it. Pete then travels to Maryland and tells Maggie that he is now free to marry her. They get married, and soon Maggie learns that Sandra is pregnant. However, Pete goes missing over the Brazilian jungle, and the search party gives up. Maggie seeks out Sandra and proposes to adopt her baby (
Billy Eugene Ferris as Pete Van Allen, Jr. #1); in return for Pete's inheritance, she would endow her future. However, when Pete is found in Manaus, Brazil, Sandra visits Maggie and Pete, and blackmails Maggie, expecting to get the child (
Timony Tennyson as Pete Van Allen, Jr. #2) and Pete back.
