Less than two months after this short premiered, the U.S. was plunged into WW2 and victory gardens such as Olive's became a necessity for the war effort.

At the beginning of this short, Olive Oyl briefly sings "It's a Hap-Hap-Happy Day," and so does Popeye a bit later. This is a nod to the Fleischer Brothers' film "Gulliver's Travels."
Olive's kitchen has all the very latest gadgets, including a mixing tap on the single basin sink. As always with shorts of this era, the attention to background detail here is superb.
