The film is based on the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921). The Irish Republican Army (IRA) attempted to create an independent republic in Ireland, which was then part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (1801-1922). The result was the partition of Ireland through the Anglo-Irish Treaty (1921).
