Hen Hop (1942)
*** (out of 4)
Here's another fast and fun short from director Norman McLaren. What we basically have is a country square dancing song playing in the background and on the screen we see the outline of a chicken (or hen if you will) that begins to dance. Throughout the short we get a variety of bizarre images including a portion where we only see the hen's legs dancing. McLaren was certainly an experimental filmmaker so his films aren't going to appeal to everyone but I found this one here to be one of the best. The song itself was a great selection and it plays extremely well with the animation in front of our eyes. There's some great use of color throughout and the chicken legs dancing around was quite fun to say the least.
