Alka-Fizz is both a play on Alcatraz Prison as well as the fizzy bicarbonate of soda indigestion remedies (Alka Seltzer, Bromo Seltzer, etc.) of the time.
The title, "Northwest Hounded Police," is a reference to the Northwest Mounted Police, which patrolled the Canadian West from 1873. The Northwest Mounted Police later became the Royal Northwest Mounted Police, and after merging with the Dominion Police in 1920 become the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Or it could be a reference to the later North West Mounted Police (1940), which came out only six years earlier.
As originally released, this was the final MGM cartoon to use the sunburst MGM logo intro.
