It's interesting that this Oscar nominated documentary short its it's 70th birthday as I write this review. The film comments that the life expectancy in 1949 was 70, 20 years more then when the grandfathers of adults in 1949 were in their prime. a mixture of serious medical studies and humor makes this an enjoyable, if slightly dated look at the issues of the heart as America headed halfway through the 20th Century. The short makes it clear that all the advancements in the first half of the 20th Century have had both a good and bad impact on the medical industry, with heart issues of many kinds being one of the major causes of an early end of life. It's both physical and emotional according to the narrator, and through dramatized views of the unhappy husband dealing with an ailing wife, the ever-busy businessman, the social butterflies partying three nights in a row and being up on their feet for at least 17 hours each day is enough even 70 years later to make the viewer see which category they fall into.
It's basically a commercial reminding the filmgoer to see their doctor, and it's interesting in an era of many insurance issues to see where medical life was back when radio soap operas dealt with doctors warning their patients to take better care of themselves. I found a lot to laugh at, even in regards to myself, and that made it seem timely in spite of some antiquated ideas. it also maybe wonder that if this short was to be remade today what it would comment on in regards to today's lifestyle. Think of that when watching this short and you may probably enjoy it all the more.
