This film is inspired by events that took place at the end of World War Two when the Nazis hid much of the gold they had looted during the war. The gold came from many sources including confiscated gold reserves of occupied countries and gold that came from victims of concentration camps. In 1945 most of the gold bullion was either deposited into foreign banks or hidden in salt mines or deep lakes in Germany, Austria and northern Italy. Treasure hunters, including some former Nazis, converged on the Alpine regions of Europe in order to recover this hidden gold.
