Loving feelings in the historical Finland
Petey-1019 November 2009
It's Turku around 1790.Katarina Thorwöst has married a much older gentleman and is a widow a year later. There would be many takers to Katarina but her heart belongs to just one.And that one is lieutenant Carl-Magnus Schildt, who's also the new fencing teacher.Docent Cajalén and reverend Martesius are not happy, who would both like to marry Katarina and the 40 000 talers she has inherited. Then Cajalén sues her for breaking the marriage oath. But she will fight to be close to the one she loves.T.J. Särkkä's Katarina Kaunis Leski is an epoch comedy from 1950.It's based on Serp's rococo play.It opened in 1948 and Ansa Ikonen played the leading lady on stage.Eeva-Kaarina Volanen and Martti Katajisto make a very good leading couple.Other actors do good job also.Rauha Rentola plays Mamselli Augusta E. Schenbeck.Jalmari Rinne is Docent Torsten F. Cajalén.Henny Waljus is Kreetta.Tyyne Haarla is Brita-Sofia Allén.Unto Salminen plays the part of Reverend Daniel Manasse Martesius.Rakel Laakso is Matami Hast.Arvo Lehesmaa portrays Mayor Leevi Allén.Thure Bahne plays Captain Pipping.Leo Riuttu is Antti. As a comedy this works so-so but as a romantic movie a little better. It's quite romantic when Katarina and Carl-Magnus stop to ask for some milk from that house in the country and they end up kissing passionately in the yard. The 18th century Finland looks good.
