When Edward is altered by his father's formula, makeup artist Clay Campbell used colored filters to effect the change. He had applied red makeup to Louis Hayward and then passed a two color filter - red and bluish-green - in front of the camera lens. The makeup looked normal under the red filter, but turned dark and scary as the camera shot through the blue-green one. Makeup artist Wally Westmore used the same technique in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931).
