Though heavyweights Columbia and Universal produced as many serials as Republic Pictures from 1929-1956, the latter studio is generally best known for its exciting sound-era chapter-plays. Universal and the less widely known Mascot Pictures were in the game the earliest; both studios began releasing their sound serials in 1929. Mascot would only last six years or so. Universal – choosing to concentrate exclusively on the production of feature films – effectively got out of the serial business in 1946. Republic and Columbia hung on to the production of chapter-plays the longest; they released their final serials in 1955 and 1956, respectively.
Republic wasn’t only a serials factory. The studio was in the low budget feature filmmaking business as well, busily churning out a dizzying array of westerns, adventure pictures, and mysteries. They would test the box-office potentials of the horror film market during the 1940s with limited success. As a second-tier “Poverty Row” studio,...

Disney has announced that they will relaunch the character "The Rocketeer" for the big screen.
Created by writer/illustrator Dave Stevens, "The Rocketeer" superhero character debuted in 1982 as a comic book homage to the Saturday movie matinee heroes of the 1930's and 1940's.
"The Rocketeer" focuses on 'Cliff Secord', a stunt pilot who discovers a mysterious jet pack that allows him to fly.
Stevens' "Rocketeer" adventures were influenced by Republic's "King of the Rocket Men" movie serial and syndicated "Commando Cody" TV series.
In 1991, "The Rocketeer" was released as a feature by Walt Disney Pictures, directed by Joe Johnston ("Captain America: The First Avenger").
The series was published by various comic book companies previous to Idw, including Pacific, Eclipse, Comico and Dark Horse.

Idw's "Rocketeer Adventures" #3, available July 2011, is written by Joe R. Lansdale, Jonathan Ross, Ryan Sook and illustrated by Tommy Lee Edwards, Ryan Sook, and Bruce Timm, with covers by Alex Ross and Dave Stevens.
"...The third rollicking issue of 'Rocketeer Adventures' goes from high-spirited pulp adventures from a decidedly unexpected source, to the too-cool junior 'Rocketeer' brigade -- plus another rollicking tale, and a couple of beautiful pin-ups -- it just doesn't get any better than this..."

Encino - One of the joys of life is not in the getting, but the ability to give. For the longest time I thought that sentiment was bullshit. It sounded more like the excuse of plague carrier. How can giving a trophy be better than receiving it? I found myself overblissed while handing hardware to a certain star.
In case you tuned in late to the Icon Celebration special on the Dumont network, that was me on the podium announcing that 2011’s Spirit of Bob Crane Award winner was Charlie Sheen. Tears of joy were shed on the trophy that’s a bronzed Sony Portable camera from ‘77. Who knew Charlie was capable of emotion - especially anyone who bought the DVD of Navy Seals.
Charlie continues the legacy of the late great of Bob Crane. Both starred in completely absurd sitcoms. Crane played Col. Hogan on Hogan’s Heroes. We...

Pahrump - Call it Hof Vegas. Dennis Hof of HBO’s Cathouse no longer wants me to warn readers that his Bunny Ranch empire is in only Reno and not Las Vegas. He’s bringing his style of adult fun to the outskirts of Sin City. He called up the hotline from the middle of Crystal, Nevada to spread the news. The sounds of hammering and drills came from his end of the phone.
“We’re moving around here and getting some things done,” Dennis Hof said. “I bought two 35 year old rundown, rat trap brothels. What you’re buying is the licenses.”
The two old names were Cherry Patch Ranch and Mabel’s Whore House. The new places are Love Ranch and Dennis Hof’s Cathouse. “Those are name that are synonymous with good times.”
There are no good times for the former owner. He got arrested for bribing a county official.

Greetings, true believers. For a far more entertaining "Avengers" trailer than the one from the upcoming film that briefly leaked online last week, check out this extremely clever and impressively convincing one assembled by a dedicated Marvel fan named Ivan Guerrero. His teaser for an imagined 1940s "Avengers" movie is inventively compiled from period serials for actual Avengers like Captain America along with look-alikes such as (Iron Man stand-in) Commander Cody from "Radar Men From The Moon". The three-minute spot loosely adapts the recent Marvel comic "Secret Invasion". Take a look:
If you want a cheat sheet for all the references, there's also a second video that points out the easter eggs. Truly an astonishing tale filled with suspense.

Hey gang! You've got to watch this incredible retro 1950's trailer for The Avengers! This thing was put together in credibly well, and I couldn't help but have a smile on my face the whole time I was watching it. I would love to see this movie if it actually existed! Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think!
The trailer above was created by YouTube user whoiseyevan and here's what he had to say about it.
What if... the Avengers movie was created years before the actual comic book?
Lost in the annals of time and space, comes this magnificent motion picture of epic proportions. Taking a page from such horror classics as "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" and "House of Frankenstein," Timely Atlas Studios (the precursor to Marvel Studios), created the first superhero movie team-up. "The Avengers" featured an awesome array of characters such as Captain America,...
