How does one sit down and criticize the perfect show? The 2020 Emmys have been kind to HBO’s “Watchmen” and for good reason: showrunner Damon Lindelof and his team delivered an intricate and diverse superhero story that elevates the medium.
In over thirty interviews and awards speeches, “Watchmen” showrunner Damon Lindelof and writer Cord Jefferson have appropriately praised Ta-Nehisi Coates, Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore for inspiring the show. They have also thanked their producers, their fellow writers, their agents, the studio heads at HBO, and many more.
There’s just one name that they keep skipping over: Darwyn Cooke.
Lindelof and Jefferson have been awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Special with “This Extraordinary Being,” a solid mindbender that careens through the haunted past of a character named Hooded Justice. But upon closer inspection, this episode, and the show at large, borrows from...

Shout! Studios has take North American rights to World War II epic “The Last Frontier,” while U.K. rights have gone to Signature Entertainment. The deals will be announced Wednesday by the film’s sales agent Central Partnership at Roskino’s digital market, Key Buyers Event.
Distribution rights to the film were also sold to Japan (New Select), South Korea (PoongKyung SoRi) and Scandinavia (Mis.Label). Central Partnership will continue to close sales during Key Buyers Event and at Cannes’ Virtual Film Market.
“The Last Frontier,” inspired by real events, tells the story of how cadets from the Podolsk military academy staged a heroic stand outside Moscow in 1941. Cadets were sent to the front line, fighting alongside units from the 43rd division to hold back the German advance until reinforcements arrived. Hopelessly outnumbered, thousands of young men died in a battle lasting almost two weeks.

Once upon a time, MGM launched a big spectacle Western remake with the top star Glenn Ford and the bright import Maria Schell — and then second-guessed the whole production, cutting back on everything so severely that director Anthony Mann ankled the set for Spain and El Cid. The storytelling is a mess — after starting big, the show soon falls into pieces. But many of individual scenes and set pieces are exemplary, especially Mann’s re-run of the Oklahoma Land Rush, staged in Arizona and augmented by classy special effects. The large cast rounds up some big talent — Mercedes McCambridge, Russ Tamblyn — to tell Edna Ferber’s multi-generational story about ambition, intolerance and dreams of glory on the frontier.

Rock Hudson and Donna Reed star in a kidnapping-vengeance-pursuit western filmed in large part in gorgeous Sedona, Arizona, in 3-D and (originally) Technicolor. It’s another 3-D treasure from the 1950s boom years. The trailer is in 3-D too.

I have a new theory for why the 1950s 3-D craze only lasted about 2.5 years: they couldn’t find any more one-eyed directors to make them.
Gun Fury arrived at the end of 1953, in the thick of what would be called the ‘fad’ of 3-D. Columbia Pictures jumped into ‘depth pictures’ as if it were a gimmick,...

Might this be another title to add to the network's fledgling list of hit new shows? Will you be watching? Details below from Own... Alaska is home to more than 10,000 active-duty soldiers, about 7,000 of whom were deployed to Afghanistan over the past two years. The war in Iraq may be over, but it continues in Afghanistan, and for those families whose loved ones are still gone, life during deployment is challenging, especially in Alaska. "The Last Frontier" is an assignment the military considers as demanding as an "overseas" post because families are so far away from their hometowns and loved ones. Married to the Army: Alaska follows the lives of seven...

Anchorage, Alaska — It's not exactly "International Love," but Miami rap star Pitbull is about to bring his act to a nonetheless far-flung site – Kodiak, Alaska.
The unlikely tour stop announced Tuesday will mark the first time the chart-topper will visit the state known as The Last Frontier, and it comes as a result of a marketing deal and perhaps a little mischief.
Pitbull, aka Armando Christian Perez, in a promotion with Walmart and Sheets Energy Strips, agreed to visit whichever Walmart got the most "likes" on its Facebook page.
David Thorpe, a writer for The Boston Phoenix, thought it would be funny to exile the "Give Me Everything" rapper to the most remote Walmart possible, and encouraged people to "like" the Walmart in Kodiak.
The store in a city with a population of about 6,100 wound up with more than 70,000 "likes." The surrounding borough, which Alaska has rather than counties, has about 14,000 people.

The Music Room (Criterion) Satyajit Ray’s 1958 masterpiece looks at the life of a fallen aristocrat as a metaphor for an India that is not only becoming Westernized, but modernized technologically and culturally beyond recognition. When the beloved music room, where he has hosted lavish concerts in the past, starts falling into disrepair as attendance drops steadily, the man realizes his way of life is vanishing. Stunningly shot in black & white, one of Ray’s finest works. Bonuses: Documentary on Ray from 1984 by Shyam Benegal; Interviews with Ray biographer Andrew Robinson and filmmaker Mira Nair; Excerpt from 1981 roundtable discussion between Ray, critic Michael Ciment, director Claude Sautet. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
Beauty And The Beast (Criterion) Jean Cocteau’s sublime adaptation of the classic fairy tale become a beloved classic upon its 1946 release, and hasn’t faded since.

The question of the moment in media is simple: Where is Conan O’Brien gonna go now? Fox? Cable? The Internet?
Well, this seems as plausible as anything else.
Latching onto a discussion Conan had with Rob Lowe on the "Tonight Show," a marketing-savvy heli-skiing company called “The Last Frontier” is offering the ginger-headed host a free seven-day package to ski chopper-accessed terrain in British Columbia.

James Whitmore, the many-faceted character actor who delivered strong performances in movies, television and especially the theater has died on Friday. He was 87. The Emmy- and Tony-winning actor was diagnosed with lung cancer the week before Thanksgiving and died Friday afternoon at his Malibu home. His long-running "Give 'em Hell, Harry," tracing the life of the 33rd president, was released as a theatrical movie in 1975. Whitmore was nominated for an Academy Award as best actor, marking the only time in Oscar history that an actor has been nominated for a film in which he was the only cast member. His Teddy Roosevelt portrait, "Bully," was also converted into a movie. Whitmore appeared in war movies (Battleground), in Westerns (The Last Frontier, Chato's Land), musicals (Kiss Me Kate, Oklahoma!), science fiction (Planet of the Apes, Them), dramas (The Asphalt Jungle, The Shawshank Redemption) and comedies (Mr. O'Malley and Mrs. Malone, The Great Diamond Robbery.
