Great!
action-610 August 2000
"Askeladden og de gode hjelperne" is yet another of Ivo Caprino`s classic animated films based on Norwegian fairytales. Askeladden is a well known character in old Norwegian fairytales and if you ask people on street to mention a character from Norwegian fairytales, Askeladden will be the name mentioned by most of them. In this movie Askeladden will try to build a ship that can fly, because the King wants such a ship, and the award for the man who can give him such a ship is half the kingdom and the princess. And that is a price that Askeladden wants and as in all fairytales the hero succeeds not only because he is nice but because he helps other people. And the animation is also excellent as in all of Ivo Caprino`s movies. A must see! 10/10

A decent, but a predictable movie

I think this movie has a good beginning, but after a short moment you realize what is going to happen in the rest of the movie. Then it potentially gets a little boring, but it is still a classic, which means that my memories are still attached to this fairytale.

Norwegian fairytale

Warning: Spoilers
Ivo Caprino is easily among the most known Norwegian directors of all time and in this 15-minute movie from almost 55 years ago, he tells us his version of a Norwegian fairytale. Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe wrote this one in the 19th century and one of the characters in here is Asbjørnsen himself. He is the old man who tells the story to the kids (and to us). The way you perceive this short film comes down entirely to how much you like the animation. I have to say I am not too big on this string-puppet lookalike style that Caprino frequently uses. And I did not like at all how the characters had that smiley face expression all the time for the entire movie. It felt a bit creepy I must say. However, in terms of the animation style, this is obviously just personal preference. The tale is fine, although nothing outstanding and not on par with the best Brothers Grimm tales for example. All in all, I hoped this could be better. Not recommended.
