- A humorless and pompous businessman goes wild when he falls in love. Now if only his domineering mother could understand his new lease on life.
- Chandrashekhar (Shammi Kapoor) or Shekhar as he is called now, belongs to an aristrocratic family, who believe laughter is a sign of belonging to the lower class, and as a result laughter is not encouraged in the household, run by Shekhar's domineering mom (Lalita Pawar). In this household the only one who dares to laugh and enjoy life is Shekhar's sister Mala (Shashikala), who also dares to love Jeevan (Anoop Kumar). Things change when their mom finds out about Mala's indiscretions, and she asks Shekhar to take her away from their home, to distant and scenic Kashmir, for awhile. She also instructs Shekhar to arrange to get married to a girl from a princely family. When Shekhar escorts Mala out of town, and on reaching Kashmir, he meets up with beautiful Rajkumari (Saira Banoo), and after being stranded with her for a night during a snowstorm, he realizes what he has been missing, and becomes a care-free man in love. This change is welcomed by Mala, but not by his mother. To make matters worse, Rajkumari does not belong to a princely family, and Shekhar knows that his mom will never approve of his marriage with Rajkumari. - Chandrashekhar/Shekhar (Shammi Kapoor) belongs to an aristocratic family, run by Shekhar's domineering mother (Lalita Pawar). He completes his education in London and comes back to run his business. In his family, people shouldn't talk more than needed and laughter is completely prohibited. Shekhar follows all those rules strictly from the heart, but his younger sister Mala (Shashikala) does not like him. She laughs and roams freely and even falls in love with Jeevan (Anoop Kumar), who works in her brother's company.
ChandraShekar runs his company with an iron fist and has very little sympathy for his staff's personal problems. He docks pay for being 10 seconds late and expects people to be in office, even if they have had a serious accident in the family. ChandraShekhar's Manager (Shivraj) is more sympathetic and tries to present the workers point of view. Shekhar has very little respect for the manager even though the Manager took care of Shekhar when he was a kid and ran the company competently while he was studying abroad.
Shekhar's mom wants him to marry Rajkumari the Princess (Azra). The Princess' Brother (Rajan Haksar) is in huge debt and is using the marriage with Shekhar to pay off his outstanding loans. When her mother finds out (from the manager) that Mala is in love with a common man, she asks Shekhar to take her away to some distant place and make her forget this man. Shekhar agrees and takes Mala to Kashmir (he was anyways going there for a business trip). There he meets the charming and lively Rajkumari (Saira Banu), daughter of a local doctor. Rajkumari hits Shekhar with a snowball when he out touring the town and that's how they meet for the first time. She is carefree, nature loving and vivacious.
Meanwhile, Mala, who was actually 6 months pregnant before they came to Kashmir. Mala meets the doctor (Moni Chatterjee) and finds out for the first time that she is pregnant. She tries to commit suicide but is saved by Rajkumari. She takes Mala to her doctor father who agrees to treat her at her hospital. Rajkumari and her father maintain the secret from everyone and from her brother Shekhar & keep her at the hospital.
Rajkumari has to go to Shekhar's house to inform her that his sister is ill. Shekhar visits the hospital daily and Rajkumari forces him to buy flowers and be generally cordial around his sister. To hide the baby bump from Shekhar, Mala dresses as a saint and convinces Shekhar to go to a mountain top temple and pray for 15 days for the betterment of his sister. But then she receives news that the mountain top is top to receive a bad snowstorm. Mala goes after Shekhar. Mala catches up with Shekhar, but he refuses to go back.
they both get stuck in a snowstorm for two days, which gives him enough time to grow closer to her. She takes good care of Shekhar and gets him to get off his ego perch to do normal things that normal people do. Rajkumari learns that Shekhar likes poetry. They both fall in love with each other as they look at each other lustfully. In that time, he understands what is important in life (when Rajkumari starts to die due to hunger, Shekhar prays to God to save her life and the next day the storm passes) and becomes a carefree man. By the time they get back, Mala has given birth to a baby boy. Rajkumari's dad is very upset that she spent 2 nights with a strange man. Shekhar steps in and promises that he will marry Rajkumari and promises to talk to his mother about the same.
They come back to their home and his mother gets shocked by seeing the carefree and changed Shekhar (Shekhar starts calling Manager Chachaji and reverts to giving him the space to run the company in his own way). Shekhar's mom has already fixed his wedding to Rajkumari the Princess.
Meanwhile Rajkumari the princess and her brother are taking on more debt to throw lavish parties to woo Shekhar. Shekhar acts weird in those parties and convinces his future in-laws that he is crazy bonkers. But the other party is so much in debt that they are willing to overlook anything and everything. Shekhar asks Jeevan to pose as a doctor and pronounce him sick in front of his mother. Mom is convinced and tells Rajkumari, the Princess' family that due to the illness the marriage has to be postponed by 5 years. They smell a rat and decide to come to Bombay.
Shekhar tells his mom about his love, but she mistakes Rajkumari for the real princess to whom Shekhar was engaged (when Rajkumari and her doctor dad came to Bombay to meet Shekhar). Rajkumari, the princess and her brother and father arrive in Bombay and the brother finds out that Jeevan has a kid with Mala and Shekhar loves Rajkumari who is not a princess. They decide to inform Shekhar's mom.
When she comes to know that Rajkumari is not the princess, she decides against the marriage. She insults Rajkumari and her father for the fraud and throws them out. She forbids Shekhar from meeting Rajkumari ever again.
But after some drama (Rajkumari, the princess' brother threatens Rajkumari to say that Mala's kid belongs to Rajkumari. He hopes this will get Shekhar to hate Rajkumari for lying to him) (Under duress, Rajkumari accepts this in front of Shekhar's mom, as she won't betray Mala at any cost. but that's when Shekhar arrives. After a few mins, Mala and Jeevan arrive and clear the confusion), Shekhar's mom too comes to know that the real value of people lies in their hearts, not in titles, and she accepts Rajkumari as her daughter-in-law. It gets revealed that Mala secretly married Jeevan a year ago and their son was legitimate. Everyone accepts Jeevan into their home and laughter comes back to their home.
