Quotes

  • Captain Christopher Pike : The point is that this isn't the only life available. There's a whole galaxy of things to choose from.

Dr. Boyce : Not for you. A man either lives life as it happens to him, meets it head-on and licks it, or he... turns his back on it and starts to wither away.

Captain Christopher Pike : Now you're beginning to talk like a doctor, bartender.

Dr. Boyce : Take your choice. We both get the same two kinds of customers - the living... and the dying.

  • [Dr. Boyce is preparing a drink for Pike]

Captain Christopher Pike : The devil're you putting in there, ice?

Dr. Boyce : Who wants a warm martini?

Captain Christopher Pike : What makes you think I need one?

Dr. Boyce : Sometimes, a man'll tell his bartender things he'll... never tell his doctor.

  • Captain Christopher Pike : I'm tired of being responsible for 203 lives, and... I'm tired of deciding which mission is too risky and which isn't, and who's going on the landing party and who doesn't. And who lives... and who dies. Oh, I've had it, Phil.

Dr. Boyce : To the point of finally taking my advice, a rest leave?

Captain Christopher Pike : To the point of considering resigning.

  • Dr. Boyce : The inhabitants of this planet can read our minds. They can create illusions out of a person's own thoughts, memories and experiences, even out of a person's own desires - illusions just as real and solid as this table top and just as impossible to ignore.

  • [the crew are trying to blast open the Talosian gate with a laser cannon, yet to no avail]

Number One : The top of that knoll should've been sheared off the first second.

Dr. Boyce : Maybe it was. It's what I tried to explain in the briefing room. Their power of illusion is so great, we can't be sure of anything we do, anything we see.

  • [last lines]

Yeoman J.M. Colt : [to Pike]  S-sir? I was wondering. Just curious. Who would've been Eve?

Number One : Yeoman! You've delivered your report.

Yeoman J.M. Colt : Yes, ma'am. Yes, sir.

Lieutenant Jose Tyler : [to Pike]  Eve, sir?... Yes, sir.

Dr. Boyce : "Eve" as in "Adam"?

Captain Christopher Pike : As in all ship's doctors are dirty old men. What are we running here, a cadet ship, Number One? Are we ready or not?

Number One : All decks show ready, sir.

    Captain Christopher Pike : Engage!

  • [a rescue team led by Number One is making adjustments to a large and formidable laser cannon that is aimed at the doorway in the rock ledge that leads to the Talosian hideaway]

Number One : [Over communicator to ship]  All circuits engaged, Mr. Spock.

Mr. Spock : [From ship]  Standing by, Number One.

    Number One : Take cover.

[the powering up of the cannon begins as crew members quickly take shelter behind rock outcroppings]

Mr. Spock : Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.

[a blue beam from the cannon strikes the doorway in a blinding and deafening blast that gradually builds in intensity. The beam strips off the stone facing of the doors, revealing dull metal underneath]

Number One : [shouting above the noise into her communicator]  INCREASE TO FULL POWER!

[the blasting reaches a crescendo. At maximum power, the energy beam only causes the doors to glow red, but does not penetrate them]

Number One : [shouting above the noise into communicator]  CAN YOU GIVE US ANY MORE?

Mr. Spock : Our circuits are beginning to heat. We'll have to cease power!

Number One : [Looking up at sky]  DISENGAGE!

[the cannon ceases fire and the undamaged Talosian doors rapidly cool off]

Number One : The top of that knoll should have been sheared off the first second.

Dr. Boyce : Maybe it was. It's what I tried to explain in the briefing room. Their power of illusion is so great, we can't sure of anything we do, anything we see.

[Number One looks over at the knoll reflectively and briefly shakes her head]

  • Dr. Boyce : What's been on your mind, Chris? The fight on Rigel VII?

Captain Christopher Pike : Shouldn't it be? My only yeoman and two others dead, seven injured.

Dr. Boyce : Was there anything you personally could've done to prevent it?

Captain Christopher Pike : Oh, I should have smelled trouble when I saw the swords and the armor. Instead of that, I let myself get trapped in that deserted fortress and attacked by one of their warriors.

Dr. Boyce : Chris, you set standards for yourself no one could meet. You treat everyone on board like a human being except yourself.

  • Mr. Spock : The inhabitants of this planet must live deep underground. Probably manufacture food and other needs down there. Now, our tests indicate the planet's surface, without considerably more vegetation or some animals, is simply too barren to support life.

Number One : So we just thought we saw survivors there, Mr. Spock.

Mr. Spock : Exactly. An illusion, placed in our minds by this planet's inhabitants.

Dr. Boyce : It was a perfect illusion. They had us seeing just what we wanted to see, human beings who'd survived with dignity and bravery, everything entirely logical right down to the building of the camp, the tattered clothing, everything.

  • Dr. Boyce : Hold on a minute.

Captain Christopher Pike : Oh, I feel fine. Just fine.

Dr. Boyce : Yeah. You look 100% better.

Captain Christopher Pike : You recommended a rest and change of pace, didn't you?

    Dr. Boyce : Mm-hmm.

Captain Christopher Pike : I've even been home. Does that make you happy?

  • Dr. Boyce : Now let's be sure we understand the danger of this. The inhabitants of this planet can read our minds, they can create illusions out of a person's own thoughts, memories and experiences, even out of a person's own desires. Illusions just as real and solid as this table top and just as impossible to ignore.
