Living in a short term apartment sublet of a friend of a friend, Norah Dain, an aspiring actress, has recently arrived in New York City, she concurrently working as a record spinner/hostess at a discotheque. Her coworkers seem friendly enough to her - they including owner/manager Marian Freeman, the "mock" French maître d' Michel, the deaf bouncer Carlo, and the young waiter Larry Sherman - New York streetwise Marian, in particular, who looks out for her. Norah has just started receiving obscene telephone calls, which she tries not to let bother her, but which may be difficult in her sexual inexperience. But as Norah is at the police station on another matter associated to the discotheque, widowed Lt. Dave Madden, father to ten year old Pam Madden, takes it upon himself to investigate. Concurrently with Madden's interest in the matter of the calls and seemingly with Norah herself, the nature of the calls become more and more intrusive in Norah's life in more ways than one, the caller making it clear that he knows all about her and seemingly her every move. This situation begs the question that comes to Norah's mind: is Madden himself her obscene caller, and does he, or whomever the caller, have a more sexually violent intent than just the calls as Madden himself has stated is the probability?
