It has been over a month since Atlus launched Persona 3 Reload, proving once again that the studio will do absolutely anything other than move on to the next mainline game in the franchise, Persona 6. But the revamped version of a title that was originally released almost two decades ago was more than welcome because it looks absolutely stunning thanks to modern graphics.
Since the series is almost always set in a Japanese high school, the stylish uniform outfits are just the cherry on top of the already amazing social simulation elements.
Naturally, the silent protagonist in Persona 3 Reload now has his own awesome statue, which should prove to be a great addition to fans’ collectible collections.

Dakota Johnson is now “Fifty Shades Freed” about details from her breakout trilogy.
Johnson, who skyrocketed to fame after starring opposite Jamie Dornan in 2015’s “Fifty Shades of Grey” and its subsequent two sequels, revealed that she “signed up to do a very different version of the film we ended up making.”
“I’m a sexual person, and when I’m interested in something, I want to know so much about it,” Johnson told Vanity Fair. “That’s why I did those big naked movies.”
Johnson auditioned for the film by reading a monologue from Ingmar Bergman’s “Persona” and at first thought the adaptations of E.L. James’ “Twilight” fan-fiction novels would be “really special” to bring to the big screen. Yet James, the studio, and the directors were a “combo” of the issues on set.

Netflix released lists of its most popular content in Japan, Korea, India and Malaysia on Monday, showing that a mix of American shows and local language content best captured hearts and eyeballs in Asia this year — with Michael Bay’s “6 Underground” the only title that proved a top hit in all territories.
Netflix said the most-watched lists had been made by tallying the number of accounts that had streamed at least two minutes of the content in question during its first 28 days on the platform in 2019.
In Japan, five out of ten of the top ten works of the year are Netflix originals. Three are animated, while a fourth is a live-action adaptation of an anime. The top-viewed content was the semi-biographical live-action Japanese-language series “The Naked Director,” which chronicles Japan’s porn industry in the 1980s through the story of real-life, controversial adult video director Toru Muranishi, played by Takayuki Yamada.

Canadian actor Taylor Russell started out in TV roles on The CW and Lifetime, advancing to the big screen in movies like “Before I Fall” with Zoey Deutch, “Down a Dark Hall” with Uma Thurman and “Hot Air” with Steve Coogan and Neve Campbell. In A24’s “Waves,” now in theaters, Russell plays Emily, a shy teenager in a family dealing with loss; her parents lavish most of their attention on her older brother (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.). The actor uses dreams to influence her performance: When she was offered the role of Emily, she texted writer-director Trey Edward Shults with lines of poetry that came to her while she was sleeping.

Martin Scorsese has a major point about the decline of the industry that many fans of Marvel Studios are missing.
Last month legendary director Martin Scorsese made something of a stir by revealing he does not like watching Marvel movies—and he does not consider them to be cinema. While it is a bit amusing that thousands of people on social media were shocked that a man who grew up in the 1940 and ‘50s doesn’t like watching Iron Man movies, the pop culture upheaval that followed led to much of what Scorsese said being taken out of context. Hence the filmmaker elaborating on his points in The New York Times this week.
Taking to The Times’ op-ed board, Scorsese unpacked his rationale for generally not enjoying superhero movies while being as complementary as possible to the craft that goes into making them.

In 1997, 39 members of the Heaven’s Gate cult committed mass suicide in San Diego, CA. They believed in doing so that they would reach an extraterrestrial spacecraft that was trailing the Hale–Bopp as it passed by.
I remember seeing reports of this on the news and seeing the videos that were released of the cult leader Marshall Applewhite. That guy freaked me the hell out! Well, HBO Max is producing a four-part documentary series about Heaven’s Gate and it will focus on the fame, fortune and power from Marshall Applewhite.
The series is being developed by CNN Original Series, and it will explore “the infamous religious movement and the stranger-than-fiction circumstances that culminated in the biggest mass suicide to ever take place on U.S. soil.”
The series will be directed and executive produced by Clay Tweel (Gleason) and this is a story that I’ve been fascinated with for years.

Nearly 40 years into his acting career, Nicolas Cage is busier than ever, though few people can keep up with his output. Even as he juggles a lot of low-budget projects that slip into anonymity on VOD, however, Cage does have a discerning side. “As long as one or two of the scenes really gets the audience moving, then I feel like I’m doing a good job,” he said during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival. “I won’t say yes to a movie unless I feel like I can bring that to it.”
Though Cage has worked with veteran directors ranging from Brian De Palma to Werner Herzog, he continues to pay attention to emerging talent behind the camera. Above: Chinese poster for Spirited Away; artist: Zao Dao.The most popular poster to date on my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram, by a dragon’s length, with more than double the amount of likes of its closest contender, was this gorgeous Chinese poster (and its color variant which you can see here) for Miyazaki’s Spirited Away (2001), which apparently just got a Chinese theatrical release eighteen years after it was made. The posters were painted by the young Chinese comic book artist Zao Dao who you can, and should, read more about here.I was happy to see Renato Casaro’s prop poster for Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood’s film-within-the-film Kill Me Now Ringo, Said the Gringo—which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago—make such an impression, as well as another of my favorite Casaros painted forty years earlier, for Screamers, a.k.

There’s a moment in Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” when all the unspoken tension breaks loose. Playwright Charlie (Adam Driver) and actress Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) have been enmeshed in nasty divorce proceedings involving the custody of their young child, and their attempt to talk it through results in harrowing bursts of anger on both sides. Watching the A-list actors throw themselves into the moment, Baumbach was caught off-guard.
“I was very moved by it,” the filmmaker said, in his first interview about the movie this week. “It’s extremely personal for me, but it really became this thing where I felt like everybody was bringing themselves to it.”
Baumbach last explored the trauma of divorce nearly 15 years ago, with his Oscar-nominated “The Squid and the Whale,” which drew on his adolescent memories of watching his parents split up. With “Marriage Story,” Baumbach’s 2010 divorce from Jennifer Jason Leigh after...

Everyone is Persona non grata in director-actor Roschdy Zem’s latest feature, which he adapted from Brazilian filmmaker Beto Brant’s Sao Paulo-set thriller O Invasor. (The original movie premiered at Sundance in 2002 under the English-language title The Trespasser.)
Featuring a trio of highly unpleasant crooks who wind up going head to head to head, with Zem himself playing the foulest — and, actually, the most likable — of the bunch, this dark and stylistic exercise is a bit too brutal to be fully enjoyable. But it’s also well-performed, gripping and nasty enough to garner up interest outside of France, where ...

Ingmar Bergman would’ve celebrated his 101st birthday on July 14, 2019. The Oscar-winning Swedish auteur helped bring international cinema into the American art houses with his stark, brooding dramas. But how many of his titles remain classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1918 in Uppsala, Sweden, Bergman started off as a screenwriter before moving into directing. His early hits “Summer with Monika” (1953), “Sawdust and Tinsel” (1953) and “Smiles of a Summer Night” (1955) helped make him a favorite amongst American audiences hungry for world cinema.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Stranger Things” Season 3.]
In the grossest season of “Stranger Things” yet – one filled with eye-popping, stomach-turning body horror – it’s appropriate that its most beautiful scene takes place on the floor of a bathroom stall. Despite the various enemy forces terrorizing Hawkins, two teenagers find a moment of humanity that shows how “Stranger Things” has evolved in its third season.
Maya Hawke joins the adventures this season as Robin, a smart girl with artistic taste. As Steve Harrington’s (Joe Keery) Scoops Ahoy! co-worker and former classmate, she gets pulled into an adventure that involves cracking Russian codes, stumbling upon an underground lair, and even being interrogated with truth serum.
But just after puking out the drug, Steve confesses his interest in Robin. The only problem? Robin is gay, although she doesn’t explicitly say so. It turns out that her crush, a girl named Tammy Thompson, had liked Steve,...

With Carlos Reygadas‘ admirably bold, intimate new drama Our Time now in theaters and his first three films now streaming on The Criterion Channel (along with a recent extensive conversation), it’s thankfully easier than ever to catch up on the poetic works of the Mexican director. To celebrate, today we’re taking a look at his favorite films of all-time.
As voted on in the latest Sight & Sound poll, the influences of the ten selections can be seen throughout this work, most notably in the spiritual ruminations of Andrei Tarkovsky and Ingmar Bergman, the non-professional acting collaborations of Robert Bresson, as well as the striking patience of Béla Tarr. Speaking to one selection, Aleksandr Sokurov’s Mother and Son, Reygadas has said it would be the one film he’d show an alien if they came to our planet. Surprisingly, however, for those who have seen Silent Light, there is no Ordet.

Black Mirror addresses our addiction to social media in “Smithereens,” but its ending is open to interpretation. Here’s our take.
This article contains Major spoilers for the Black Mirror episode, “Smithereens.”
Black Mirror doesn’t always go for a shocking twist at the end of each of its episodes, but there are many instances where the ending, whether unexpected of not, is left open-ended for the audience to draw their own conclusion. Such is the case with “Smithereens,” the second episode of season 5 which released on Netflix on June 5, 2019. In that episode, a man named Chris kidnaps an employee of a Twitter-like social media company called Smithereen with the intent of forcing a reckoning with the platform’s founder. The resulting confrontation involves the police, the kidnap victim, and Chris’ own desire to end his life, but we never get to see what actually happened after the final gunshot.

Series creator Charlie Brooker says episode two of the new season isn’t sci-fi. But what this sci-fi critic presupposes is… maybe it is?
This story contains spoilers for Black Mirror season 5 episode “Smithereens.”
The second episode of Black Mirror season 5 — “Smithereens” — probably won’t sit well with sci-fi enthusiasts hungry for another trippy tech-twist. In fact, writer Charlie Brooker has gone on record about the episode, telling EW they “wanted to do a contemporary episode without any sci-fi elements at all.” And yet, when one considers the purpose and lasting execution of science fiction, “Smithereens” could totally be viewed as a work of hard Sf.
To paraphrase Kurt Vonnegut in the essay “Science Fiction,” science fiction authors and critics love to stay up late and debate about the definition of science fiction. In Vonnegut’s day, these debates existed in real life, mostly at small science fiction conventions.

Black Mirror Season 5 Episode 2
When real life caught up to Black Mirror, series creator Charlie Brooker promised us he’d look ahead. After moving over to Netflix for the series' third season, he delivered reality-altering leaps in episodes like “San Junipero,” and “Playtest,” and season four's “USS Callister.” Then he spent a year dismantling the medium as we know it and rebuilding it in the mold of the video game. Bandersnatch, Netflix’s first “interactive” film, nearly broke my brain when I tried in earnest to review it. I don’t know if this trajectory set expectations any higher for Black Mirror season 5, but we could reasonably infer, based on the show’s track record, that the new episodes would introduce concepts...

Before we dig into things, I should mention — I was very late the Persona party, and Persona 5 was my first entry into Atlus’ fantastic Jrpg franchise. I fully submerged myself into that game for hundreds of hours, beating shadows, freeing palaces, unlocking new personas — and also living the everyday, mundane life of a Japanese teenager for a year. After that much time spent playing and getting to know its wonderful characters, you tend to get attached. They become friends, in a way, and that’s the biggest selling point of Atlus’ new 3Ds game, Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth. Above all else, it’s just nice to hang out again with these old friends.
While Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth is actually a sequel to 2014’s Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, the story of that game is left behind for a brand new adventure, centered around a...

If you’re a long time Jrpg (Japanese role-playing game) fanatic who remembers the genre’s golden era, chances are that you could spend the rest of your day reminiscing about the plethora of amazing games that populated the libraries of the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 before fading away during the PlayStation 3 days due to the rise of First Person Shooters and eight hour cinematic adventures.
What often goes underappreciated is the insurgence of fantastic titles available on PlayStation 4; between new titles and remakes of lost gems, there are plenty of life-consuming adventures to lose yourself in. So without further ado, here are our picks for the eight best JRPGs on PS4 for old-school Jrpg fans (at least to hold you over until the FF7 remake sees the light of day!).

Remain calm K-Pop fans! If you were watching the 2019 Billboard Music Awards Wednesday night, chances are you heard plenty of screams when Bts took to the stage with Halsey to perform "Boy With Luv." The guys brought their signature dance moves, impressive style and infectious lyrics to the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Falling profits have forced Sega to devote more resources to existing franchises and more PC ports.
In a recent earnings report, Sega revealed that the company is shifting its focus to some of its older IPs as well as more PC ports. You can check out the full earnings report if you want, but we don't recommend it unless you're really into reading static PowerPoint slides. The big takeaway from the report is that Sega did not do nearly as well as it hoped in 2018. In fact, the company suffered a 70% loss in yearly revenue. These losses have forced Sega to adopt a new strategy which will see the publisher shift its focus away from developing new IP.

Myths of duplicates and alter-egos have persisted for thousands of years... In Zoroastrianism, one of the world's oldest religions, the deity Spenta Mainyu is The Holy Spirit while his "evil twin" – Angra Mainyu – is the Destructive Spirit. In Ancient Egyptian mythology, a ka is a "spirit double" with the same memories and feelings as its counterpart. Native American folklore depicts an upper world where the good people reside and an underworld where their evil doubles dwell. Today, we refer to look-alikes as doppelgängers, a German word meaning "double-walker." When it comes to cinema, numerous iconic films have tackled the phenomenon, from Vertigo (1958), Persona (1966), and Dead Ringers (1988), to more recent movies like The Prestige (2006), Black Swan (2010), and Enemy (2013).
